I just don't get the whole K-cup thing (Keurig, etc.)

Sure, they're convenient, but the expense!
I was in line @ Starbucks on Sunday and I saw a box of 12 K-cups priced at over $1 per cup.
I buy whole bean coffee for about $6.50/lb. I can get roughly 36 cups of nice strong coffee (the way I like it) from that lb., so each cup costs about $0.18.
My household drinks a 12 cup pot every day, so there's little waste.
I just cannot fathom paying 6x more for a little convenience.

Get one of those reuseable plastic/metal K-cup things and put your own coffee in it. Rinse it out real quick when you are done then let it dry. They also make disposeable K-cups that you can put your own coffee in too. You just take 10 minutes one day and prepare a shitload of them at one time.
I don't prefer using my Keurig, but it's convenient as hell, and I don't waste half a pot of drip coffee if my wife decides she dosen't want any.

They're not convenient at all. They require a whole new goddamn piece of equipment in my kitchen just to use them!
I've been sticking with Starbucks VIA instant coffee lately. Sure, it's not cheap, but you can't beat the convenience of just boiling water and having a cup of coffee a few seconds later. Sure, it's instant, but it's honestly good stuff.

I forgot to mention the waste, all of those plastic cups...
If I were to use a Keurig, I'd go the reuseable K-cup route.
But then you're foregoing half the convenience, so...

Instant was always shitty stuff, but seriously, the Starbucks packs are actually good flavorful coffee. Probably costs 80 cents a cup though, but I only drink a cup or two a week. And I no longer have to break out my coffee maker or Keurig to make a cup (in fact, that Keurig has been in a box for the past 2 years now).

Home Goods: 20-pack k-cups going for $8
the reusable k-cup is a good alternative (I have one) but the standard k-cup makes a better cup of coffee. The reusable k-cup coffee seems a little weak, but it works.
keurig is more expensive than the standard drip but it's still a lot less expensive than driving to starbucks and ordering a cup of coffee

That's it! I use mine for when I get gourmet stuff or cans of Tim Horton's.

Champagne tastes on a beer budget? If I was under pending lawsuits, I wouldn't post on my lifestyle or appliances in my procession.

No need for fancy coffee machines or kcups, I use an entire quart of water and a horn siphon. It has a flanged airlock on the end and one of those vacuum hoses to pump air through it so that it forces the hot water into the antechamber. it actually comes out really good.

They're Ok for what they are. With the right coffee and settings they can make a good cup of coffee. They can also make completely crappy coffee. Just like any other, you can get greatly better or worse results depending on how and what.
The answer to your question is mostly convenience and individual variety. Makes more sense in the case of an office, hotel room, or other place like that but can apply at home too. Nothing worse than a pot of office coffee that's been sitting around cooking. Or if somebody mades some nasty pumpkin cinnamon raspberry or some shit that you can taste in every pot for days after. I'll take the K-Cup.
At home I drink 2 cups/day about an hour apart in the morning and I'm the only one who drinks coffee here. Makes no sense to make a whole pot to get it to come out good enough and then letting it cook. Or doing that twice. Wastes as much or more coffee. I'll grind beans and use a French press if I want something better but that's a pain for day-to-day first cup. Also easy to have a variety around vs pounds of beans. So works OK in my case. I hate flavored coffee myself but if you have multiple people who like different stuff makes that easy.
If you're paying that much for the stuff then you're doing it way wrong. These days I usually pay around $0.35/cup for the ones I like buying from various places that have ongoing deals. Staples has 24 packs (that are kind of hard to find on their site but are there) that they regularly have at 20% off + another 30% off using coupons they send out all the time. Various other deals. Stock up then. Or use one of the reusable deals as above. Takes some fine tuning but you can get decent coffee out of them.

Apparently he also fornicates with dog poop. I suppose it is warm and squishy, so it might feel kinda nice. Since it's already out of the animal, you can't get busted for beastiality.

that's what was thinking, they're for pussies. real men throw a scoop of coffee beans in their mouth, grind it with their teeth and wash it down with a mouthful of boiling water. all that other stuff is for queers.
Saw something a few days back that said these things basically run about 50-60 bucks a pound for coffee, and mediocre coffee at that. Even I think that's ridiculous, and I once paid 30 quid for a pound of Kopi Luwak.
So it's the gillette model again - sell the razor cheap and charge a shitload for blades.

Negro... I press one button. Fresh ground, fresh brewed; delicious coffee. By the cup or 12 cup carafe. Fuck all that other shit.

That's still 4 - 5 times more per cup than using a drip machine, for coffee that some think is inferior.
I use a 20 oz. travel mug. I would need to use 3 K-cups to fill it. That's $1.95 minimum (upwards of $3.00). I might as well save the $100 I'd spend on the Keurig machine & stop at Starbucks. At least I'd get to oogle some Barista T&A.
