Chevy Volt Sales in Sub Zero Canada Now Taking Off- Kanuks Getting Rid of Oil

Added to roughly 100 sales each month in February and March, the Volt has a good chance of setting a new yearly sales record as well. Two years ago, Chevy sold 1,225 Volts in Canada; this year, after just four months, they're 40 percent of the way there.

Plug-in electric car sales in Canada, Apr 2014Plug-in electric car sales in Canada, Apr 2014
The Nissan Leaf, meanwhile--fresh off winning the 2014 Canadian Green Car Award for Best Electric / Zero-Emission Vehicle--achieved 77 sales.

That total ranked as its third consecutive second-best sales month ever, at least north of the 49th Parallel. April's numbers bumped March's 75 sales to third-best-ever, and February's 64 to fourth-best.

The relatively consistent sales over this three-month period leave us wondering if this might be the new normal for Leaf sales in Canada – until the company expands Leaf production at its Smyrna, Tennessee, factory once again, that is.

Toyota sold 11 Prius Plug-ins in Canada in April, down slightly from March (13). Mitsubishi sold 10 i-MiEV electric minicar, also down slightly month-over-month (12). Four Cadillac ELR's were sold as well.

New Tesla sales record

Looking back to registration data for the previous month of March, the Volt's astonishing April overshadowed a magnificent March for the Tesla Model S: 119 of the company's "engineless carriages" were registered for Canadian roads, just beating the 111 seen last March.

That 119-unit sales figure was good enough to steal the March sales crown from the Volt, one month later. It also qualifies as the sixth-highest monthly sales total for any individual plug-in electric vehicle in Canada, behind an array of Volt titles.

I thought Canuk's only drove pickup trucks before there was no grid electricity in Canada.

Who knew they have electricity Canada?

Regular gas in Canada is $1.14 to $1.37 US per liter, which is $4.31 to $5.18 US per gallon. This is a country that, like the US has plenty of oil. Where we have decided not to drill, Canada does drill, but taxes the shit out of their people. They would rather export their oil than to let their citizens have it at a fair price.

Wow, at that rate they should have 1,200 sold this year. They might as well start shutting down the gas stations. It's all over for gas stations. Hahaha

+1

Yeah where are Canuk's getting the electricity? Hand cranks?

Just like free healthcare for all Canadians, electric cars are a bad idea.

How do you figure. A lot of American power is hyrdo-electric. Plus with Volts and Prius you can charge them solar units installed on your house.

Nope. Hydro is only about 5%-7% as a source in any given year.

For all of the talk, solar amounts to squat.

Below is for 2011 but it hasn't changed much and the graphic breaks out the other/renewables into components.

Actually there are all types of programs popping up financing the panels with the car. There are all types of plans and shit that make it affordable. Im not doing a google search but yeah. Plus the prices of solar is dropping. Thats why Republicans are passing legislation giving utilities free reign to fine self sufficient folks.

A true environmentalist would never live in a house that large. It goes to show the hypocrisy of the left is based on elitism and stupidity.

Do electric cars have added benefits in cold weather?

No, the opposite, electric cars have deficiencies in cold weather.

That impossible. All Chevy Volts catch fire burn to the ground.

The stop selling Volts three months after the first dealer offered them to the public.

Chevy closed done the Volt line and is building mini-vans.

They have engine block heaters up north, but the big problem is the energy consumed for the space heater. A gas heater or curling up with four Huskies is still the most efficient way.

It makes a lot of sense to encourage electricity-powered transport in Quebec, Canada where they have spare capacity in hydroelectric power.

Your dumb sarcasm is more dumb than you know. Actually, they have shut down the Volt line a few times due to slow sales and trucks and SUVs still are by far the best selling vehicles.

I like electric vehicles but this is an idiotic article. Yeah, they're on track to (maybe) set a "record" of pitifully low sales. lol

That is an interesting point. You don't have to warm up electric motors so there could be huge benefits to having an electric hybrid. Just hop in an go.

Plus electric motors are more efficient when kept so you would get more miles.

Maybe the Canuk's aren't so dumb after all.

And yet Canadians enjoy a standard of living second to none in the world, and the government, unlike the US, is not saddled with crushing debt.

I don't see a single Wells Fargo or BankAmerica in Toronto, but I see dozens of TD Bank (Toronto Dominion) in Northern Virginia.

If that is socialism, maybe the US should take another look.

I like the way FOX News thought if you didn't charge the Volt it would run out of power.

FOX News is just so stupid.

Eric Bolling of Fox’s The Five. Maybe they thought Bolling would feel the same kind of love for the Volt that tree huggers experience upon climbing into their first Toyota Prius. Not quite.

Bolling criticized the battery-power performance of the Volt, about 25 miles, when the Nissan Leaf approaches 100 miles.

Bolling noted that, two days in a row, “The car ran out of electricity in the Lincoln Tunnel on my way to work,” which prompted a co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle to pipe up and say, “I’d rather roller skate backwards in the Lincoln Tunnel than drive that thing and break down.”

Bolling added, “Why would you put out an electric car that gets only 25 miles?”

Apparently FOX News thought so.

Bolling added, “Why would you put out an electric car[Chevy Volt] that gets only 25 miles?”
