Hot room
Posted by: MrMephisto ()
Date: January 10, 2014 01:41PM

The top room of my house gets unreasonably hot. Heat rising (as it is wont to do) and a lone supply duct make it sweltering while the rest of the place is comfortable.

Opening the window is not preferable. Any ideas on how I can vent that excess heat somewhere else on the cheap? Leaving the door open with a fan on is not a solution to this problem.

Thanks, FU Brain Trust.

How old is the house? FH Furr does full duct cleanings for $99. You could rent the equipment and do it yourself if you want a more thorough job. You'd be surprised at what comes out.

Seal off the vent?

Thanks Rockhound, but duct cleaning isn't the issue...

We could seal off the vent, but then the room would be too cold. Maybe 3/4 seal it?

You could try taping the top of the washing machine box that you live in with 100MPH tape.

1) Stick dry ice in the vent.

2) instead of pointing a fan out the door, point a fan into the vent to slow it down.

3) drill a few holes in the vent in the room before it so one room takes slightly more heat than before, and hot room takes slightly less.

4) install a misting device

5) make the room a "No Clothes Allowed" room.

6) Embrace the heat and turn it into a green room. Or paint the room like with a beach motif. You can even include ocean sounds and steel drums.

7) Is there a window that is taking in a lot of sunlight during the day? Cover it with foil.

8) Instead of one fan out the door, try two fans... Or a giant fan...

No need to thank me, it's what I do.

we had the same problem where i used to live, the sleeping room up on the 3rd floor was next to the chimney and would start to become unbearable when the heat kicked on. we ended up poking thin nailholes up thru the roof and ceiling to let the heat escape naturally upwards and avoid incoming drafts. unfortunately water really poured in the first few times it rained and not only came throu the roof but soaked all the way down into the walls and flooring, affecting the other two stories, and are landlord sued us and ended up keeping our deposit.

1. You should have a duct valve installed that allows you to regulate the volume of hot/cold are being pumped into the room (if you don't have one already).

2. The room should have its own thermostat and a return air duct tied into the system. Based on the temperature of the return air, the system adjusts the temperature of the heat being pumped into the upper room.

3. You can shut off the duct to that room and have a wall mounted Mitsubishi Heat/AC system installed (which also requires its own outdoor unit). Expensive about $3500 installed - but very effective. I had one installed in a bedroom in an addition we added to our home and it has worked for 10 years - no problem. You just have to clean the filter every 3-4 months depending on how much you use it.

I have the same problem in my house. And the answer is more in keeping the heated air downstairs than worrying about how much hot air is coming out of the vent upstairs.

We made a drape of sorts out of a piece of heavy material (it looks like a tapestry) and more or less sealed off the stairs with it. Pull it back to pass but for the most part, the hot air can only rise to the top of that opening. Not to the top of the house.

Mephisto being not only a janitor, but a homeless janitor, is an old running gag...

Not particularly funny... but the accusation has a place in history here...

I'm sure the guy was just making a reference to it...

Nothing against janitors, but you sure as hell can't afford a house in NOVA on a single income, on a janitor's salary. MrMephisto said "house". Perhaps he meant "townhouse"? Maybe he splits the rent ten ways with his ten roommates?

Because the more miserable MrMephisto's living situation is and the crappier MrMephisto's job is, the more joy he will feel, even though his own situation is likely only marginally better.

Deriving joy and pleasure from the misfortune and misery of others is an emotion well-known to many Fairfax Underground denizens.

That is the way things are done here.

Houses are expensive. It's literally impossible for an unmarried, single income janitor to be a home owner, not just in NOVA but anywhere in the United States.

ok but it is most likely just fantasy and most people are probably living much better off than him seeing as how people who are living well dont make comments like that or care about anyone else's lives at all in that sort of way.

My house, your house, Alfredo's house, Animal House, Doctor House, The House That Funk Built, or House of Cards exclusively on Netflix... Got any ideas on how to keep that room more temperate?

I'm gonna go with a 3/4 vent seal and make something to fit over the window so there's not permanently foil on the window. That room is taking in a lot of sun.

Mephisto, sounds like all you need is to turn on the fan in your furnace without turing on the heat. This should recirculate the air in your house and even things out a bit. I have this same problem so I upgraded my thermostat to one that allows me to turn the fan off an on whenever I want.
