You should use an excel spreadsheet to keep a running tally of the value of everyone's gifts.

That way you can demand cash payment for any discrepancies between what you gave and what you received.

lol. a goat.

The point is they did not put any thought in a gift. These are the same shit heads who use my lake house whenever they want. Every year one of them fucks up my boat or a jet ski and leave the place trashed. The one who came over with nothing just asked my girlfriend if he could use her fathers cabin to go sking this weekend. F-them.

My kids and I racked up nicely, I can't complain at ALL!!! We are setting up the PS3 Move as we speak :) :) :)

I just forgot to get my brother's girl a gift LOL she's a new girlfriend my bad for forgetting about her!! They just started dating like 3 months ago!!!

I felt bad and went to hand her one of my macys giftcards (got 2x $100) but she said no thanks. Tried to slip her a $50 and she still declined. At least I tried!!!

Some of our family was empty-handed but we expected it, they are unemployed. We still gave them and their kids gifts though. It's supposed to be about the kids anyways!

Merry Xmas to everyone!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......never really gave it any thought but come to think of it, it does take a lot of deep soul searching, caring and attention to your friends likes and life to pick out just the right amount of cash to give them.

Maybe next year they'll just give you the cash back instead of actually picking something of useful value out for you.

To solve the gift problem, next year place a $25 minimum $100 max limit on gifts- and consider doing a secret santa exchange. Highly suggest cash/visa gift cards for those who are hard to shop for.

Heck I gave everyone but the kids cold hard cash and bottles of nice liquor and chocolates. Those are gifts ANY adult can appreciate!

As for them using your vacation home, just say NO. WHo said you HAVE to let them use it? Say you have other PAYING renters there when they want it, they'll get the hint.... OR simply start charging a $500 CASH security deposit and they get all but $200 back (for your cleaning costs/time) when they leave everything clean and in it's place when you check.

Honestly, it sounds like you've kind of trained them to expect much and give little. Next year, announce that you've decided to 'get back to basics' and present them with a jar of homemade jam (made by your cleaning lady or whoever you can rope into doing this) - or nothing. They'll either get the hint or they won't, but at least you won't hate them.

BTW, if some of the gift givers are kids, teens, or young 20s, you probably know that you have to cut them some slack. Your lucky if you get a gift at all from this age group. Also, women love to give candles. Don't ask me why - I don't get it either. If they got them from Walmart, that's one thing; if they got them from a designer store that's another.

Another thought - it's possible that these people are giving you crappy gifts because they don't know what to give you. You don't sound hard pressed for money, so they may think that you already have everything.

Regarding the lake house - tell them that you've decided to give the gift of a summer vacation to poor inner-city youths - so the place is unavailable. If they look at you with horror, you'll know where they stand. I grew up in a resort community where incoming relatives just assume that your place is theirs - especially if it's a separate lake house. You need to nip it in the bud early.

In any case, find a way to give up the resentment or it will eat you alive.

Worst gifts ever, or worst gifts this year?

Worst give ever was when I was 14, a relative handed me a card that said they made a $5 donation to a charity in my name. $5 fucking dollars. Not only did I not get a present, I probably looked like a cheapass.

This year (so far) - my mother in law who "ran out of time" to get the wife and I a gift. She's fucking retired. But she's coo-coo as coco puffs as it is, so the wife and I just laughed about it. Every year she does something that makes you just shake your head.

At least you know what to expect and may get a good laugh from it all.

The great thing about cheap gifts is that they usually come with only a minimum obligation to be appreciated. Say thanks, perhaps use it once when the giver is around and then it can be trashed with no hard feelings.

got a remote control indoor helicopter. Pretty much just zooms into the wall and ceiling - about 2-3 seconds per flight. Why did the company even bother?

I LOVE the goat idea. Absolutely perfect. (OK. Maybe it's perfect for the gift giver, but not quite as ideal for the recipient.) But MY shopping's complete for next Christmas. Finito! And I'm sure no one on my list has ever had a goat donated in their name before. No more duplicate nightgowns, or ties, or video games for the wrong system. No more from the recipient: "Oh, it's lovely. Ummm . . . did you keep the receipt?"

As for the gift giver, no more "You're so difficult to shop for" apologies. Just put a nice, confident smile on your face as you proclaim: "As soon as I saw this, I knew it was PERFECT for you!"

Just be careful. From that site's FAQs:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DO PEOPLE EAT THE GOATS?
Families are not allowed to eat the goats bought by donors for the program. Only after the family has reached a sufficient herd size to sustainably provide for their needs are the goats occasionally sold or used for nourishment. However, these goats are offspring of donated goats. We do not promote hand to mouth. Rather we encourage growing organic gardens to produce sustainable streams of food and nourishment. https://www.giveagoatnow.com/faq
Goats are what they eat in third world countries. So they gave a poor family that can't afford meat, meat. I suppose its charity meant to rack up your good deeds. Who knows, that may end up the best gift you've gotten on judgement day lmao.
They are supposed to use the goats to turn the surrounding vegetation into milk and cheese and to breed more goats. I would be pissed off if I found out they used the goat I gave for a big skillet of goat helper or a big goat bb-q
You want a lot of good deeds? Dig a well in a third world country where it will be used for fresh drinking water. The more people in need around it the better. Every time those poor people take a drink it was all you baby. And it never stops.
