What's the best pity party music?

What are some good depressing songs to listen to when you are down and out?

Ya know, when you feel like shit and want to listen to sad music.

I'll take any genre...

+1 on Johnny Cash's "Hurt". Trent Reznor said that it's not his song anymore. He wrote it and he recorded it first but, he said it's Johnny's song now.

I'd also add "Black" by Pearl Jam. The album 'Ten' was a watershed moment for Generation X-ers. When it dropped, it changed everything. If you weren't alive in 1991, you probably hate this record...and that's ok.

"Yeah I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why...why...why can't it be...why can't it be me?"

It's actually hip slang

If you're male and you want to hate yourself, listen to some Tori Amos or other Lilith Fair-type 90s chick stuff. She'll tell you what a POS you are for being born with a dick, and do it with great vocals and piano playing. I love it but can't take more than one song.

Because YouTube would take my already sub-par and low-quality caterwaulings and add their compression, thus increasing the songs' sub-par-ness and low-quality-icality.

I wanna give a shout out to one of my biggest fans... the one and only, Friskydingo. This one's for you baby.

Where is the moment we needed the moooossst?
You kick up the leaves and the magic is loost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new lowww
You're faking a smile with the coffee ta gooo
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' onnnnnnnNNNNNN!!!

Cause you had a bad day!
You're taking one down!
You sing a sad song just to turn it around!
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie,
You work at a smile and you go for a ride!
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind!
You had a bad day
You had a bad dayyy

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' onnnnnNNN!

You had a bad day!
You're taking one down!
You sing a sad song just to turn it around!
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oh.. Holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

So where is the passion when you need it the most?
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down!
You sing a sad song just to turn it around!
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad dayyyyyyyyyyy

Nothing beats a TGP original.

Nice... good stuff y'all..

I'd like to add some kid cudi to the mix . . . Usually down, yet different.

I also think Pursuit of Happiness (http://youtu.be/7xzU9Qqdqww) really really hits home.

Radiohead " Creep"

Its no wonder no likes these musucians on a personal level with all their self-loathing. Even after they make it, they still hate themselvs, probably even more.

Lyrics:

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
in a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so fucking special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I'm not around
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell I'm doing here?
I don't belong here

She's running out the door
She's running out
She runs runs runs

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here

I tend toward the shoegazey/neo-psycheldia genre when I'm on the downswing. Music resurrected by bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre or My Bloody Valentine. A sound that's been around since the 90s, but there are still plenty of bands writing this stuff nowadays. Trippy/droney downer rock you can chill out to.

Sorta newer- Tamaryn "Heavenly Bodies"

Yes I'm lonely wanna die
Yes I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

In the morning wanna die
In the evening wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

My mother was of the sky
My father was of the earth
But I am of the universe
And you know what it's worth
I'm lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

The eagle picks my eye
The worm he licks my bones
I feel so suicidal
Just like Dylan's Mr. Jones
Lonely wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

Black cloud crossed my mind
Blue mist round my soul
Feel so suicidal
Even hate my rock and roll
Wanna die yeah wanna die
If I ain't dead already
Ooh girl you know the reason why.

The best, and amazingly not mentioned yet (maybe it's too old now?) is the Cure's Pornography. Also the Cure's Faith is pretty miserable.

Pornography is up on YT in full.....
