Two different sounds but both are great. I listen to both depending on my mood.

Trent Reznor and Maynard had a side band called Tapeworm. I don't think they actually recorded any music.

Lol! I know NIN but don't know (nor have heard of!) Tool. I think a thread like this calls for at LEAST one link to YouTube, huh?

[and...this sure does show what NOT watching TV can do to a person, huh?]

Arbitrary Tool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglVqACd1C8

Arbitrary NIN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDsqpeiTqg8

Tool hands down. Straight up hard rock prog, great musicians, and they have perhaps the best singer in the business right now.

NIN is good but it's a different kind of thing.

NIN. One of the first real concerts I went to was that David Bowie Nine inch Nails show.

Bad ass.

I've never really gotten Tool. I think I'm not disenfranchised enough.

I'm not sure why I like this particular clip - perhaps because of the drum side of things. Once again, however, I am saddened that the bassist, if any, is not there (seems folks who make video recordings (of anyone OTHER than RHCP where the bassist IS the lead guitar...) go out of their way to make sure bassists are NOT shown much - weird):

That's pretty cool, but it sounds to me that the bass is synth bass and the keyboard player is playing it or at least operating the sequencer.

I don't like how these kinds of music groups always dress really scary, like in halloween costumes. And scary looking videos also. Why can't they just play their music but not look so scary?

they don't look that scary in those pictures, but overrall, these kind of groups have always seemed really scary and "dark" to me, which is a minus.

why so dark?

Yeah, I was trying to figure out where that sound came from - the keyboard is hands off during much of it and the "rhythm" guiter certainly doesn't seem to be playing it - maybe you're right and it's pre-recorded.

At the very end, plus or minus, the drummer turns off something on the amp next to him.

I understand that, but that doesn't mean they have to dress up in halloween costumes while they're playing there music.

NIN

The Downward Spiral was one of my favorite albums to come out that year

never really could get into Tool beyond just a general respect for their music

Well, it says it's live, and you hear when he throws the mic down, so assuming it really is live you can see the keyboardist playing when the bass is playing, and also the electric piano parts during the "doesn't it make you feel better" line. There is also a synthizer part that is obviously programmed off a sequncer because it keeps playing when the whole band stops.

What I can't quite get is how they synced up the sequencer to the drummer, who starts playing before the synth does. Maybe the drummer is controlling it from that equipment rack next to him.

Well, because nobody wants to dress like Bill Haley and the Comets anymore.
