we've all heard about the study showing that some 70% of the shopping carts in local grocery stores had traces of fecal matter on them. Since this drew my alarm, I've started noticing how few people wash their hands in public restrooms, even after taking a crap.

My daughter noticed the same thing in elementary school, as virtually every little girl-all from solid, middle class families-neglected to wash their hands, even after doing a number two. My wife has started noticing this too. She was really appalled when a big shot woman at her work took a crap and just walked out of the rest room with a big smile, without washing her hands.

My question is; how can this be possible? Are we now living in a Third World country, where basic rules of cleanliness are not important? Weren't we all potty trained, and told at that point to wash our hands afterwards? What kind of people don't teach their kids this? More importantly, what kind of kids learn this, but then somehow decide it's better to not wash their hand after it's been wiping their ass? Are there really successful, intelligent adults who think it's okay to leave the restroom with fecal matter on their hands?

Maybe it's always been this way and I just never noticed before, but I have to believe this is more of a disturbing recent trend. Needless to say, the proliferation of fecal matter on shopping carts, on ice cubes in restaurants and other common areas represents a real public health hazard. Has anyone else noticed this? Do people even care? Were you all trained to wash your hands? Do any of you not wash your hands after bathroom visits? All comments welcomed.

i always grab a paper towel on the way out of the bathroom to open the door handle with if it is a door I can't kick or push open with some clothed body part. people are fuckin disgusting

I do not believe there is ANYTHING in or on my body that is nearly as filthy as that of other people.

I'd rather take my chances with my own fecal matter than touch faucets, towel dispensers, etc that have been touched by thousands of pigs. How come, since there is always shit inside of you, is that fecal matter is dangerous? Why doesn't your own shit in your intestines/colon kill you?

Yesterday, I was at the Target in Potomac Yards when I really needed to take a shit. I rushed to the bathroom, which is conveniently located at the FRONT of the store, which sucks when you are in the BACK of the store. Inside were two stalls and two urinals. A large, Mexican employee had just exited the handicapped stall and I rushed in. I did not catch to see whether the Mexican employee washed his hands as I was struggling to drop my trousers before shit began to roll out.

Unfortunately for me, the large Mexican employee had apparently just taken a shit and on the toilet seat in various spots were the remnants of his bowel movement. As I edged closer to the seat, my butthole puckering at the anticipated release, I noticed that the large Mexican employee had also been sweating and a glossy sheen of sweat covered the toilet seat. Not to mention an aroma of greasy tacos and refried chicken n beans that filled the air.

My knees were buckling as I fought back the urge to loosen my bowels, but I damn sure wasn't sitting on that toilet seat and I sure as fuck wasn't going to wipe the damn thing clean without paper towels and some Clorox. So what did I do? What anyone would do when faced with this situation.

I squatted in the corner and blasted the floor and wall with diarrhea-like shit. It sounded like a strangled trumpet but I didn't care. It felt so good to empty my bowels! After several minutes, I crabbed-walked over to the toilet paper dispenser and wiped myself clean. Goddamn if I didn't get some shit underneath my fingernails! Do you know how hard it is to pull your pants up with only one hand? Man, I envy those motherfuckers with only one arm. How they do it, I'll never know.

I DID however, wash my hands. Several times in fact. The only thing I do not remember is whether or not I flushed the toilet after I threw the poopy toilet paper in. I would've loved to see the look on the poor motherfucker's face who had to go into the bathroom afterward and "clean" it. That would've been priceless.

After working in New York for a while, it became an indelible habit to wash my hands anytime I got home or back to my office. I would actually feel the slime and grime on my hands until I washed them.

Shopping carts are the worst. Though, I suspect most of that fecal material is actually because people put their cute little bundles of shit and piss in the basket that the rest of us put our produce in.

- Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
- Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry.

Are you hand-washing fanatics going through that whole process each and every time you go to the bathroom? Especially after you break the seal at the bar after a couple beers? If not, then all you're doing is killing off the weak germs and breeding future generations of super germs.

Besides, if you're anywhere outside of your home, your hands will be re-contaminated within five minutes of washing. Just get over it.
