That story is a good cautionary example.
Hypothetically speaking, if you were to go relic hunting make sure you don't do it out in the open like these clowns. Try to find a more secluded area with a lot of tree/bush cover. And you'll need at least 1 spotter, 2-way radios are your friend. And make sure you plan a quick escape route through the woods in case the anti-metal detector gestapo shows up to bust you.
They've had 100+ years to recover civil war relics. If they haven't dug them up by now then they're fair game imo.
