Does anyone know of areas in FX Co where one can legally (with permission) dig for CW relics?

Just go to the Manassas Battlefield! I hunt there with my metal detector all the time. I've found lots of bullets and belt buckles and whatnot over the years.

If you are new to this and don't know about North South Trader's Civil War

If you want to come to my neck of the woods and hunt then get with these guys

I'm amazed about whats still coming up from the ground since the golden days of the sixties and seventies. I can only imagine whats still under all that asphalt and concrete in Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax County.

In case the OP wasn't sure, the above is extremely illegal.

I'm a volunteer at MNBP and would like the OP and everyone know that if NPS law enforcement catches you relic hunting with a MD they will arrest you, confiscate the detector, and I believe your vehicle as well.

Totally illegal, unless you are on private land.

Yes, but why should I tell you where to find relics?

That story is a good cautionary example.

Hypothetically speaking, if you were to go relic hunting make sure you don't do it out in the open like these clowns. Try to find a more secluded area with a lot of tree/bush cover. And you'll need at least 1 spotter, 2-way radios are your friend. And make sure you plan a quick escape route through the woods in case the anti-metal detector gestapo shows up to bust you.

They've had 100+ years to recover civil war relics. If they haven't dug them up by now then they're fair game imo.

Yeah, pretty much. Fuck them all. Unless I didn't translate your incoherent babbling correctly.

I agree with the criminal guy. What good is all this stuff just rotting in the ground?

We own over 20 acres in a historic civil war area, If I find relics on our property, do I need to report it and to whom?

I agree that they should not be left to waste in the ground, the parks system should arrange public treasure hunts and split the finds with the seakers.....at leat that way they can uncover our history before it rots away....I would be willing to try sneaking, but I dont want to get caught, lolol....

digging up lead balls is not worth a pair of balls slapping your chin in prison.

whats the big deal finding old musket balls? Buy em on ebay, it's not like you will find a gold bar or anything worth more than a few bucks.

Go buy some property in the Richmond area. Still hear stories of folks digging up their yards for gardens and come across some old civil war stuff

but be careful don't want to go Ka-Boom!

You can ask the rich folks in D.C. who live around The American University about this kind of situation.

Although that stuff is apparently from the War To End All Wars We wish well maybe not if you work for General Dynamics

Sequestration it's not for everyone! Health Care won't bring in the same easy money.

I have always been told that using a metal detector in a national park is illegal. I live in New Jersey and in my county using a metal detector is also illegal.

Autumn,

Would you like to meet me at waffle house? We can share a waffle, then you can blow me by the dumpster.

I read some years ago, when the water levels at the C&O Canal go down, there is a trove of relics in the bed

I went with a buddy of mine who was big into it. We went to some creek in Clifton on an xmas day, not sure about permission, nobody bothered us. My friend thought on xmas day folks would be busy, not down there walking their dogs and stuff? We dug up all kinds of metal items, we found 4 civil-war era lead bullets in about 2 hrs, and all kinds of other bullets. People had definitely fired lots of weapons in that area over the years. I was surprised how shallow the stuff was buried, maybe half a foot deep, I thought it would have been deeper.
