Northern Virginia is great, and it is the major contributor to Virginia's statewide economic engine (including sending lots of tax revenue to Richmond and getting a much smaller portion of that back in return).

But all of our elected officials have FAILED in terms of our traffic and transportation mess. Every developer who ever built any residential, or commercial, or industrial building in Northern Virginia should have paid additional impact fees at the time of construction so the roads could be fixed. Now we have a mess.

Other than traffic congestion, NoVa is tops in almost all other catagories.

This is because Virginia is a Dillon Rule state. Many local governments have tried different ways to get around it but most have ultimately been shot down by Richmond.

The drivers make it suck. At the beginning of the last decade I thought Florida drivers in SoFl and around Orlando were insane, but within the past few years it has gotten so bad here, that the drivers down in Florida actually seem tame and polite in comparison! I can't count the number of times I've almost gotten into an accident around here due to the jackass drivers; yesterday I narrowly avoided two accidents: One a side swipe, the other a driver going the wrong way down a divided four lane road. On top of that, too many people around here could care less about even acknowledging greetings. If you say "Hello" to a passerby on the pathway, the chances are 50/50 that they'll either reply back with a likewise phrase, or they'll silently stare at you as if you're a potential serial killer and freak of nature. My friends and cool neighbors are what make this place bearable, but the rate of growth is making every negative aspect harder, and harder to overcome.

1.constant brake-checking, because older drivers seem to believe if you look young (even though you may not be) and you're driving faster than they would want their own children to, they need to teach you a lesson!

NoVA has no culture. It exists because of Washington, DC. All cultural influence comes directly from pop culture. I'm from the Blacksburg area in southwestern Virginia, and after going to college with tons of NoVA kids, I'm amazed at how dishonest they are with themselves and each other.

It's actually pretty great. Have you ever lived anywhere else? Maybe you should try Samolia, North Korea or Oxen Hill.

I moved here from San Diego. It sounds unlikely, but it is much nicer here. Maybe that is true for someone that isn't rich like me. About the only thing that is worse here is the traffic and drivers.

Speaking of Cape Cod, which is where I grew up, they have had a huge influx of Brazilians in the last few years. They consider their Brazilians to be the equivalent of our Mexicans - which they aren't, for a variety of reasons. No place has escaped immigration issues.

It is a great place to visit. Fly into the airport near downtown with the ocean and beaches... it is wonderful. I genuinely recommend it. Get a hotel room downtown and do all of the touristy stuff. You'll have a great time.

Live there and the long-term experience is much different. Live 45mins inland in some overpriced tract home community with a rabid HOA. Traffic is bad. Horrible school systems... at least in the neighborhoods that us mortals can afford. For a quality education you pay tuition to send your kids to private schools in addition to paying the high property taxes.

Over 8% sales tax and much higher state income tax rates. Water bill was over $120/mo even with conservation measures in place.

2,600 homes were lost in the Oct 2003 wildfire - houses near my home burned down. Property insurance rates reflect the high risk.

After a few years of working your ass off to just fall behind, you realize you haven't seen the beaches in months/years.

I'm making much more out here and paying out much less to stay. We can afford to have my wife stay home with our kids. The kids go to better schools. We get some fun snow days occasionally. I'm saving for retirement too.

I'm glad that I'm living in Fairfax County!

1) Developers do pay for infrastructure you fricken idiots, thats how 99% of roads get built. The problem isnt that, its that the region keeps allowing developers to build further and further out, and more and more remote. And while the developers do build these roads, they have no burden to fund the maintenance of the roads. Then all the dumbasses who want big retarded looking houses live out in the boondocks and drive inside the beltway, CRYING CAUSE WHY DOES IT TAKE 45 minutes I want my 6 figure job and to live out where the typical wage is less than 10 dollars an hour. The fault is on you for living that far and you are a retard. You wouldnt be so "pissed" off about drivers if you only spent 5 minutes in your car a day instead of 1/10 of your life.

2) NOVA does suck because it HAS relied on DC to guide its culture (although I would say some good stuff comes from NOVA too). The big cause of this is that the guidance of what gets constructed and allowed in Fairfax is judged by people who are either retirees or about to be, 50% of which are ex-military or government. This has created a decrepit stagnation of culture in the area and a lack of anyone with balls to start something cool. For an example look at the Virginia ABC laws thread here. We all want to live in fucking pleasantville and then complain that its not sustainable and that form of life style sucks. Well theres one solution stop living in homogeneous neighborhoods with all you other whitebread eating fucks and live somewhere that does have a culture like East Falls Church, Arlington, etc. Dont worry none of them want to rape your ugly ass wife either.

Nah, there aren't that many out of state residents in most locations I've been to. Except LA or NYC.

NOVA is simply part of the District of Criminals (DC) as is much of MD. True Virginia really doesn't start until beyond the 1st Rest Areas along 95 S. and 66 W. Plenty of people in NOVA are pampered by Tax-payer funded income, whether it be gov't issued goodies or Federal salaries. Many of them are utterly self-absorbed and could care less about their own next door neighbor.

People (loose term) move here for federal employment and knock the region. If they are so superior why couldn't they live in the areas they enjoy and find gainful employment or create more industry? NOVA and Md were once very nice communities with less traffic, malls, fast food establishments and a lot less pretentious carpetbaggers chewing down off of taxpayers money.
