How many suicides USING A GUN, moron? The problem with guns is that they make almost any halfway competent attempt at suicide successful. One impulsive moment, and you are gone for good. It's really very simple -- guns = death. If you favor death, then you favor guns. And vice versa.

I see you haven't really rushed into talking about gun-related suicide in Japan, so I will simply point out that their rates for gun-related suicide are comparable to those for gun-related homicide -- they are each freakishly rare at around 0.03 to 0.04 per 100,000 population. The most common means of suicide in Japan is hanging, which of course offers hundreds or even thousands of chances to change one's mind -- chances that a gun would never allow. The biggest key to avoiding a suicide is to introduce delay. Guns don't help with that at all.

In addition of course, the concept of "honorable suicide" has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. Japan's population is also skewed upward to levels where medical suicides begin to occur. These are factors that would tend to make suicide more common in Japan, but our 300+ million guns sure help keep us in the game. There is simply no getting around it -- GUNS = DEATH.

NoVA native here. The area's not the most terrible place to live. As most of the suburbs around here have lots of cash you end up able to find lots of exclusive or high-end products in the malls and stores around here. However, there is no local flavor or culture here. Because of the high number of transplants there's a huge emphasis on established branding and chains. Being from NoVA is like being from nowhere. There are almost no cultural events here or in DC and a lot of the people around here are about as interesting as cardboard boxes. There are very few people here interested in reading, music, film, visual art, or even beer (despite the decent stock we get at the one chain that supplies 99% of the beer in the area, Total Wine). This is an area made by Baby Boomers and their federal government jobs. The area's notorious for having no local flavor and a poor dating scene. Do not move here unless you don't have a shot in hell of making a living in another city.

The first thing I noticed moving here from VA beach was how relatively courteous and careful people are behind the wheel. People will actually let you in here! Wow!

Could not have said it better myself. Like every area, NOVA has it's has pluses & minuses, but you hit the nail on the head. People here are obsessed with 3 things here, name brands, the cost of their house, and their jobs.

Im from FL and completely agree. First thing i noticed was people are assholes here. Its changed me too, i dont greet or talk with neighbors or new people too much anymore. The taxes and cost of living here was a rude awakening as well, Pay more to live with some assholes, no thanks.
Also noticed people are not free here, theres this vibe of everyone being on lockdown.

Nope. Feds come here because they can do things that you can't do anywhere else in the world - State, FBI, CIA, Justice, Supreme Court, Congress - and they are smart. Just because you couldn't get a job outside CVS, don't put down educated Feds. Envy much?

Most feds have huge workloads and responsibilities with enormous pressures on them by Congress, politicals, the public, and gottcha media. It's not the job it was a generation or two ago (pre-Reagan), with decreases in benefits, security, salary, etc. Any young person who stays in public service work after two years is crazy -- it's thankless, unappreciated, and largely miserable. As you move up the ladder, your thrown under the bus by politicals and supervisors blaming workers for a lack of resources/production while those slobs face stacks of work and unrealistic deadlines, all the while facing snarky comments like yours; e.g., Veterans Affairs, Social Security, Homeland Security, State/CIA... You wouldn't last two weeks in an average Fed job.

After 20 years, I left the Fed service (5) years ago, and never looked back. To state the obvious, you don't know what you're taking about. I now can participate in politics, play golf during lunch, have vacation time that I can actually use, even go crazy and take two weeks at a time, come to work late and leave early, take two hour lunches -- i.e., work like an adult without punching a card and working under a miserable jerk who is also working under a miserable jerk. I work hard over the week, but, on average, it's less than I did as a Fed and I get paid more with lots more flexibility.

And, finally, your comment is consistent with one I would have expected from someone who grew up here. I've found locals to be petty, ignorant (dumb if you want a one syllable word), parochial, lacking in culture and sophistication, who often marry women who stay at home doing nothing for 30+ years. Now go get yourself another beer. You have one more brain cell to kill.

As someone who is here neither because I or any of my family has a Federal job nor because 9 generations of my family never left this godforsaken state, I can pretty much say both you Feds and the from-heres suck.
