It's doubtful a psychiatrist is going to prescribe drugs over the phone. They are going to want to review your case history first, which may take several days at a minimum.

What drugs are you using anyway?

Woodburn is NOT where you want to go for general psychiatric help. It really is for the uninsured or people on Medicaid, or mental health emergencies and you then get open with the CSB which is a Department of Mental Health and generally considered serious Mental Health stuff. You don't want that on your record.

Just search your provider list. Or go to Kings park business center and look at the directories. There has got to be one over there.

Won't a general practitioner prescribe drugs? Unless it's super serious stuff but the more common anti-anxiety and depression stuff they see all the time. They won't make you go to a specialist unless you have a psychotic disorder like Schizophrenia (which is fine if you do but in that case you will need a psychiatrist)

Outside of an occasional Valium or Xanax, I think GPs stay away from psychotropic drugs.

Well, I'd been perscribed xanax more recently, took wellbutrin for a bit (but quit), and I used to get adderalls as well.

I found a DR to see later today but he has horrible reviews online so I'm hoping maybe someone could refer me to a good DR.

Just having a real hard time caring about work and staying motivated to show up (even though I know I need the $$ to pay the bills)

This raises a good question... Can all MDs prescribe all medications? Or are there different tiers that can be perscribed depending on youe specialty or some other criteria.

Asking CAN a GP prescribe pyscotropic drugs, regardless if its common practice. Mental health professionals can me extremely difficult to get an initial appointment with.

What I dont get is how is the OPs psychiatrist just "not around anymore". Did OP move, did the doctor move? There are patient abandonment rules/regs (whatever the word is) that are deigned to protect patients from this situation.

Other possibilities include OP that the threatened his original psychiatrist and Abandonment wouldn't apply.

There is something phony about this thread.

There's nothing about Xanax, Wellbutrin or Adderall that requires you to continue taking them. Specifically, Adderall acts like speed in adults. Unless you are clinically diagnosed with ADHD, you shouldn't be getting it at all.

It's so that I can go once every 3 months (as opposed to a required once a month) to see a DR for minor therapy, and to see a DR that actually acts like he cares about my well being. And won't perscribe me something that I tell him I specifically don't want for example zoloft cause I can't get a hard on when I take it

You probably won't find a physician to do something like that right off the bat with the types of medications you are looking for because they need to get a feel of how the medicine is working for you, and they don't want the DEA on their backs.

Did you get a copy of your medical records from your previous physician's office? Maybe take that to your primary care physician and see if he/she can find someone for you.

Watch Intervention on A&E. I would say 90% of the people on there are hooked on prescription drugs. It's really an epidemic that nobody is addressing because of the power of the drug companies.

Psychologists are PhDs, not physicians like psychiatrists, they can't prescribe medication, the most they can do is contact your doctor and recommend some sort of medical treatment.

Having said that, my insurance, UHC, does not use psychologists under their mental health coverage; they use social workers with mental health certifications. From what I understand, this is the new trend among all insurance carriers.

My primary doctor told me "here in family medicine we wouldn't touch psychiatric medicine with a ten foot pole."

Northern Virginia really sucks when it comes to psychiatrists. Most are one-man practices, and the ones that take new patients only have appointments available several months in the future.

PhDs can't prescribe medication. That's mostly therapy from a Psychologist. It is hard to find an MD who is a psychiatrist. That's why you simply go to your PCP. All PCP's will prescripe anti anxiety and depression meds. Especially simple SSRI's (like Wellbutrin, Prozac, Lexapro). They tend not be comfortable with psychiatric diagnosis but mood disorders, yes.

There's a big difference b/w psychotropic meds and psychiatric meds. Psychotropics are the mood disorder stuff, anxiety = xanax, valium, etc, and SSRIs or SSNRIs for depression/generalized anxiety = prozac, celexa, wellbutrin, lexapro, cymbalta, etc. PCP's will prescribe these.

They generally won't prescribe medications for Psychotic disorders which sort of includes bipolor but technically not since this is a mood disorder (although they tend to be comfortable with Lithium), but mostly Schizophrenia type meds (antipsychotics like Clonopin, Haldol, Risperidol, etc). You need a specialist for this because they usually supplement this with therapy and watch closely the behavior and how the med is affecting the behavior.

P.S., I know that technically psychotropics are considered a psychatric med but in general practice a distinction is made betwee the two with the above differences.

If you call and say I need you to prescribe me drugs, of course they'll say no but if you call and say you need to talk about some anxiety or concentration issues you have, they'll listen and start you on something. If you're freaking out and sound like a pill popper when you set the appointment, you're going to make them uncomfortable.

I understand why people would be a little worried thinking this is another pill popper. But just because someone sounds like they are doesn't mean they don't need professional medical help .

The OP shouldn't be taking any of those drugs without regular therapy. A psychologist can provide the talk therapy. Usually the doctor will have a relationship with a psychiatrist who can evaluate and prescribe the appropriate drugs. Honestly the mix of drugs discussed by the OP don't go together. The comment about not being able to get up and go to work sounds like depression. Or just lazy. A general practice doctor can prescribe anything. But most ethical doctors won't prescribe these kinds of drugs without at least a consultation with the psychologist providing treatment. My diagnosis? TROLL

Original poster, I realize you live in Burke but I am going to assume you have transportation of your own? If you do, there are a lot of really good psychiatrists in Washington DC and it might be worth your while to travel there for care. Many are affiliated with GW and Georgetown and are good in coordination with your PCP if you have any medical conditions that also need to be attended to or monitored. You can begin your search by looking into GW and Georgetown's school of medicine, psychiatry department. You can often find out the psychiatrist's area of expertese (i.e. anxiety disorders, addiction, children/adolescent, geriatric etc.). A lot are generalists but some do specialize so you can look into that.

Good luck to you. I know how hard it must be to not have a doctor at this time. Please do not give up (I know you will not but I just wanted to add that :)

Doctors place themselves on a pedestal and expect society to revere their accolades all the while they pedal narcotics at the behest of big pharmacudical. If you are okay with these two laying in bed together you are a tax-donating drone. Please dont procreate.

Doctors should have a variety of medications to turn to for those with mental illness/anguish, there are many differences between medicines deigned to treat the same illness.

This is why it is an ethical quandary. Is it just coincidence that my doctor has sample packs of the EXACT drug he thinks I should take? In other words, wouldnt I be better served if he weighed the different medicines that COULD treat me, made his best decision, then writes me a prescription for the BEST med regardless if it came from Pharma A or Pharma B

People, PSYCHIATRISTS are MDs as such they can prescribe drugs. They go to the same medical school other doctors go to, the residency and specialty is different.

PSYCHOLOGISTS (w/ a PHD) if non MD do NOT prescribe drugs.

One goes to medical school one does not. One has a DEA number and a license to practice medicine one does not.

GP can prescribe whatever they like, some will not but they can. Psychiatrists can also prescribe whatever they want even if non psychiatric (they get samples of viagra for instance from pharmaceutical reps).

The only restriction on prescribing is for super hardcore drugs like oxycotin. Due to the huge abuse I think only MDs in a certain pain management practice or credential can prescribe that.

I heard that many psychiatrists in the DC area don't take insurance due to the high volume of patients willing to pay the whole bill themselves (think about the high power types in this area who don't want a paper trail!). Good luck finding one who does and has an opening in the near future, I feel your pain.

I go to psychiatrist. This is brain doctor. Take goldfish with me. This means fish gets treatement to! No copay for goldfish. Place buttocks on the couch. Place feet on the couch. Place feet like Rick James did!! Doctor not happy. This means frown was not upside down. Had to pay for couch cleaning. Goldfish water in docs office to. Pay custodian. This means person who cleans. Pulled pants down. Doctor said I see your nuts.

Can someone please help me????????????? None of these people are even taking new patients( I guess half of Northern Virginia are headcases, kinda like me). They also don't accept insurance. I don't want to go through the county either because of the bureaucracy
