What is going on with FCPS and good kids commiting suicide?

They finally realize that they are too rich and too privileged.

There must be something about living in Fairfax County Virginia that is causing so many young people to commit suicide.
For all my time in my former community high school , not one person offed themselves. There was plenty of other drama, gang fights, pregnancy, rampant drug use, but not one suicide.
Perhaps young folk see how their parents live here in NOVA , and figure an enternity of darkness is preferable to the endless traffic, the Third Worlders, Yuppies, Hillbillies and miscellaneous Douche Bags, vanishing job opportunities, and the worst restuarants and bars in the country?
Maybe the high schools should stress that there are other places to live in the world , and instruct students on how to move?

I'm a student in FCPS and I don't find any problems with it. Yes, the news IS true. I have a friend who goes to Thomas Edison HS and she clearly stated that. I also think people are really being disrespectful here.

I knew her. she was talented, smart, and was accepted into a good college. it's really sad that this happened. she was a great girl but something just isn't right. we all saw her as happy but that's apparently not so. i dont wat to offed anyone by saying there was something wrong but it's true.

What a horrible loss, all those commenting should remember this young lady has a mother. Would you want your mother to read such horrible comments. I think not!!! This young lady was in a lot of pain, what she didnt realize is a mom loves unconditionally. There isnt anything too big or horrible that you cant tell your mom or a friends mom. I drove by an elementary school today and there were 50 mini-vans lined up dropping off kids. I imagine because it was too cold for their kid to stand outside and wait for the bus. Next I see 20 parents holding the hands of their kids as they take them into school.

It's no wonder these kids can't cope on their own as they get older.

Lets get the facts straight people.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL):

19.3 percent of high school students have seriously considered killing themselves.
14.5 percent of high school students made actual plans for committing suicide,
900,000 youth planned their suicides during an episode of major depression.

While suicide does not seem terribly common, it is nevertheless a major cause of death. The CDC reports that it is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24. The only two things that cause more death among teenagers are accidents (usually in the car) and homicide. And even younger children do not escape. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 14.

Gender differences in teen suicide

Teen suicide statistics show differences in the ways boys and girls handle suicide. While girls think about attempted suicide about twice as much as boys, boys are actually four times more likely than girls to actually die by killing themselves.

The disparity in the number of "successful" suicide attempts between boys and girls is probably explained by the methods that each use when attempting to kill themselves.

Girls who attempt suicide are more likely to try killing themselves by overdosing on pills or by cutting themselves. Cutting is a behavior that is more common among girls. Additionally, overdosing on pills is a less violent way to commit suicide. Some girls even choose pills because it allows them time to "stage" their appearance before. Some girls find it more "romantic" to die in such a way.

Boys are more likely to choose a method of attempted suicide that is more lethal - and quick. Boys more often use guns (60 percent of all suicides in the United States make use of a gun), jump from great heights or hang themselves. This is why they are more likely to die in a suicide attempt. By the time someone discovers a problem, it is usually too late to prevent death.

It is important to recognize the gender differences in teen suicide. It may help you prevent suicide down the road if you understand the different methods that are most likely to be employed in suicide. It is also important to realize that 90 percent of those who kill themselves actually have depression or some other mental health issue. It is important to understand this in order to prevent teen suicide.

Even though the suicide rate did go down briefly between the early 1990s and the early 2000s, it is worth noting that the teen suicide trend is reversing. The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) reports that teen suicide in 15 to 24 year olds has increased at a rate of about six percent. For those aged 10 to 14, that increase has been 100 percent. Teen suicide statistics show that there is a clear need to keep watch over teenagers, and be prepare to help them through tough times.

This is about a young girl who could not deal with what life gave her.

Please talk to your kids about teen suicide. It may or may not help. Many teens feel helpless and have no one to turn to. They should NOT turn to FCPS, they will only demean the kids for their thoughts.

Where do we go from here? Only up I hope.

PS If kids are taught they can not trust adults with whom they are with every day were are all in trouble.

Again here are the facts

Women and girls made up 51 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized
population in 2002 (144 million female residents and 138 million male residents), but the share of women and girls in the population varied by age.

Among people under 18 years of age, boys outnumbered girls by nearly 2 million. The proportions of men and women in their twenties were not different. The
female population gradually began to outnumber the male population after that. Among the population 65 and older, women outnumbered men by 5.3 million.
Overall, there were about 96.6 men for every 100 women in the United States in 2002. This sex ratio (number of males per 100 females) varied by race and Hispanic origin. The Hispanic population had the highest sex ratio (104.4). The Asian and Pacific Islander population and the non-Hispanic White population had sex ratios of 95.1 and 95.9, respectively—while the American Indian and Alaska Native population had a sex ratio of 92.0. The sex ratio for the Black population was 86.6.

Notice they said "non institutionalized", so I am guessing this leaves out the prison population which I would guess is more male, and the nuns which are all female. But I would guess the number of prisoners outnumbers the number of nuns.

NO ONE knew that there was something wrong with her, she seemed like such an out going person, she had a smile that could light up a room, and the best personality.

Our school went through a rough day today, but the Edison Eagles are a family, and we will keep moving forward to try and deal with the death of such a loving girl. So if you all can find ANY compassion in your heartless souls to RESPECT her death and her friends and family who are grieveing over such a heart breaking death, then stop posting such crude comments and let the poor girl rest in peace.

I go to Hayfield Secondary, down the road from Edison, with many close friend who attend there. When I heard about Alyssa's death today, I wanted to break down and I didn't even know the girl. The weird thing was, I had just recently facebook "creeped" on her. So sad and unfortunate. I wish I had known her because she seemed to be so kind and nice and always to have a smile on her face. I can't even imagine how Edison is dealing with this now. TWLOHA. Alyssa <3
