I resisted FiOS for a number of years. Then finally got it. With the right deal, I found it to be much cheaper than Cox. For two STBs et al, I pay about $125 a month. Thats HSI, Phone, and Cable.

If you give that figure to the Cox people, they will insist that 1) you're lying or 2) Verizon is lying to you. Once I heard that out of Cox, I was done with them.

Pay someone to put a good rotating antenna setup on your roof or in your attic and get digital TV OTA. Get a PS3 or a Roku box and stream content through providers like Netflix.

You need a good broadband connection, but as with landline (and even VOIP) phones the need for paid television subscriptions is getting less and less.

I'd go with Cox. I've had my share of issues over the years but they get them fixed ASAP. Before when I had FIOS I had to wait a couple weeks for them to send out a service guy. And actually, apparently because I used to have cox before I switched to FIOS, they matched the promo pricing I was then paying with verizon to get me back. Right now I pay something like $108 for internet, phone and 1 digital cable box...not bad.

But yeah if you aren't tied to certain programming (like HBO for example) then the best is to stream netflix stuff through your XBOX or PC...more and more shows/movies are available online for free if you look.

Seems to me the FiOS bundle is the best deal. I have DirecTV and the problem is you can't tie it to your phone package and the data service sucks.

I'm happy with the FiOS, and I'm really happy with DirecTV too (We just got an HD DVR installed. It's the bomb-diggity!).

I have a Jeff Foxworthy day-by-day calendar. I just tore off today's page...the saying for tomorrow is:

We have been through Cox and DirecTV and my neighbors (who are like family) have dish.

I looked into this a while back. The FIOS product seems to be well liked by everyone who has it BUT the Verizon service is horendous. If your phone/TV/internet stop working, its takes two to three weeks to come out and fix it.

I don't know about you but that's unacceptable for me. My experience with COx is that they can typically come out within a two days (still too long but better than Verizon)

repost:

I used to wonder why Verizon had such a bad rep. Not anymore.

I got FiOS in 4-09 on a two year contract. Was pretty happy with it, but failed to see what the hoopla was over. Basically, IMO, it's Cox without the frequent outages.

The other night, I tuned to the Speed Channel (a non-premium channel included in most or all cable channel line-ups) and it was GONE. Screen said that I don't "subscribe to it". So, I called the bastards and they tell me that Speed is no longer included in my bundle and if I want it I have to upgrade my bundle and re-up for two more years.

That's breech of fucking contract! I agreed to pay $X.XX a month for two years and they agreed to provide a particular level of service for two years.

It's a scam, folks. Don't tell me it was an accident that the Speed Channel was deleted instead of one of the 100's of garbage (spanish, shopping, etc) channels that I would never miss. Nope, they know I watched Speed and figured if they took it off, I just might agree to a new 2-year contract ($25 a month more) in order to keep it. It's extortion!

I told the guy to stick the whole thing up his ass and cancel my FiOS immediately. If they come after me for an early termination fee, they'll be in for a fight. I'm the kind of nut that will spend thousands to keep from getting fucked out of a hundred.

So folks, if you're 18 months or so into your 2-year FiOS contract, and a standard channel that you watch suddenly disappears...they want you to renew with a price increase.

I'm back with Cox which is a lousy outfit too, but they're not a slimy as Verizon. Plus, it's easier to get a person on the phone at Cox.

2 year contract? I thought all customers were now getting no contract required.

Same thing happened to me with ESPN CLASSIC. I turned on my television one day and it was gone.

I agree about the entire Verizon customer service issue (ie, Taking forever to send a repairman out), however, the tech did come to our home sooner than we were told it would take, and he was a really cool dude. As for my DirecTV with the HD DVR, after having lived with this thing for a little under a week, I'm beginning to wonder how I lived without it!

What's so great about it? Cox has HD DVR's as well. I'm sure Verizon does too.

My FIOS has gone out once in over 5 years of subscribing and even then it was a partial outage. It took me three hellish phone calls to get a tech on the line that finally instructed me to reboot the ONT. Problem solved.

I haven't seen DirecTV picture quality in quite sometime but when I switched to FIOS TV it blew away both DirecTV and DishNet picture quality. I was able to run DTV and FIOS side-by-side. Pixellation and compression artifacts were far worse on DTV.

Well what do you expect? Satellite means OTH transmissions which limits bandwidth and means that there are susceptibilities to everything from doppler shift to rain and mist.

I have Direct TV and love it but I don't love the package I got stuck with. Direct TV will sell you the Cable and Internet bundle but they won't tell you the you are getting Verizon DSL as internet. If you get the bundle then you can't get Verizon FIOS which sucks. The bundle is pretty cheap though and I got a special for $75 for cable for a year with an HD DVR box and $25 for Verizon DSL. Direct TV is offering 5 months free right now based on the recent commercials I've seen. I'm happy with it except when a huge storm hits and the reception goes out for a minute or so.

The FIOS DVR sucks if trying to record sporting events based upon a team. To record a 'series' you select the show based upon the show's title. Unfortunately on FIOS all MLB games have the same title, ‘MLB Baseball’ and all Hockey games are ‘NHL Hockey’ and so on. The teams that are playing may show up in the show's description, but there's not even a guarantee of that. There’s no way to record only Baltimore Orioles games or Washington Capitals games since the team names are not in the show title.
