dollar coins on the toll road

Does anyone know if a dollar coin counts as "exact change" for those lanes at the main plaza?

Thanks!

If they're legal US currency, they have to be accepted.

No they don't.

I don't know about dollar coins, but I was at the toll plaza today in a lane where the booth was closed. The guy in front of me apparently thought the booth was open, as he only had a dollar bill. He tried tossing the bill in the basket, I guess he (or his girlfriend in the passenger seat) thought he might as well try. He took it out and sat there for about a minute until I put my car in park, walked up and threw quarters in in exchange for his bill.

Those cashiers will absolutely not help you if you're in the wrong lane. A few weeks ago a guy several cars ahead of me got stuck in the wrong lane, he sat there honking his horn and waving, and the attendant in the lane to his right completely ignored him. I think he may have gotten out and knocked on the booth as well. I wonder if it's a strict rule (which would probably be there to get more revenue), or if they're just assholes.

YES. I asked one of the Currency Collection Engineers the same question last week as I had several of the dollar coins courtesy of the USPS. She tossed the dollar coin into the mesh bucket, light turned green, and I proceeded.

Bigger issue: I need to get a SmartTag.

If you get a person they have to accept all valid US currency as payment. They can't call the cops and say he wants to pay but I don't want to accept it in this form. The attendants at many places often are assholes but if they won't take your money they're not doing their job and can be fired for it.

Given a choice between a $1 coin and 100 pennies, I think that they would take the former, but you could certainly hand them a baggie full of coins and there is not much they can do except be a bit pissed. On the other hand, this is probably not something that you want to do around rush hour.

Do the exact change baskets accept pennies?

That isn't true at all. Legal tender has to be accepted by the Federal Reserve system, and that's it. A business is free to choose what it will accept or reject as payment. Hundred dollar bills, 500 pennies, dollar coins- if they don't accept them as payment it's 100% legal.

It depends on the Toll Road's payment policy. If their policy says it accepts dollar coins, then yes, the person should accept them. But if it doesn't accept them, there's nothing illegal about it.

It is a strict rule. Partially for safety, they can't have attendants running across lanes of traffic. Mostly for efficiency. If they are manning one of the few "full service" lanes, they can't get out and help some reject who is too stupid to read the very obvious signs over the toll booths.

If you're too much of a moron to know that "exact change" means "have the exact CHANGE (aka, coins, not bills)" then enjoy your ticket. Next time, learn english.

And as for your second fail, they do accept all forms of currency. At the *FULL SERVICE* booths. The exact change booths take change, not bills. They also inform you of cases where they do not accept all forms of payment (via signs stating the hours of the full service booths).

Business don't have to accept all forms of payment. What they have to do is state which forms of payment they will accept before rendering service. Otherwise you can pay with any form of US legal tender. In the case of toll roads, they clearly state which lanes take change, credit cards, change + bills, or any combination.

I can confirm that the tollbooths on the Dulles Toll Road accept pennies, but the machines have a tendency to miscount them, which is probably not an accident. And if you dumped 100 pennies in there, it would take a little while for them to get processed. It's a good way to use up those stray pennies in the ashtray though.

How much do they cost? I don't commute on the Toll Road, so I figured they probably aren't worth it for me.

if you set it up to deduct from your bank account automatically, they waive the 35 dollar transponder fee. This is what I do, even though I only use the EZpass maybe once every other week, it is a lot more convenient

They work on more than just the Greenway and the Dulles Toll Road. You can use them in a number of states along the east coast. The full list is on their website. It's handy if you have to drive to New York or further north. Saves you from having to fork over tons of cash at the bridge crossings, etc.

I think it even works on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Bullchit. The attendants in the booths regularly get out and run to help cars stranded in lanes. I see it all the time. There are always people who are in the wrong lane in the booths to the greedwa.
