Walmart in Fairfax City?
Posted by: Arthur Andreisokov ()
Date: May 17, 2010 03:06PM

Someone told me Walmart-this is store-has been approved. It will go in Fairfax City. This is town in Fairfax where snobs live. People there wear golf clothing. This means polos. They are like old man from Caddyshack. He was a judge. This means he wears robes. He does not wear pants in the family. Walmart in Fairfax City does not make sense. Snobs do not like walmart. People of walmart are nice. They wear unusual clothing. This means they do not wear golf polos. They do not wear $200 shoes. Fairfax City is rich part of county. People bring pitchforks if Walmart is built.

edit by Cary: Corrected typo in subject line, was "Walmart in Fairfax City?"

Walmart has a pretty good selection of pitchforks with reasonable prices.

I'm no snob but I hate Wal Mart too. They drive quality, local businesses out of the market. Besides, I don't want everything I buy to be made in China by 10 year-old slave laborers.

Yes, I too like that old Mom and Pop family-owned store you go to all the time for everyday items all made in 'merica by good, hard-working union folk gettin' a fair wage for a fair day's work. It's called "This Store Doesn't Really Exist and Hasn't for Decades" I think.

Nah, there still lots of local businesses. The problem is they can't compete on price. BUt they sure do offer better customer service, advice, etc.

I like to think of Walmart in the terms of Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Some people see whores, pimps, gamblers and sons of bitches. While someone else sees saints, angels, martyrs and holy men.

In other words what you see in Walmart depends on the person doing the observation. While I used to hate Walmart I now go in knowing it is expected I will see things I have never seen before. Outfits that dont come close to matching. People that probably shouldnt procreate and yet they do. Toys so dangerous even adults should be prohibited from buying them.

300 pound people poured into clothes for 100 pounders. The most vulgar and profane tee shirts you can imagine outside of bike week. And of course the Indy 500 of motorized fatty carts.

I look upon a visit to Walmart as a carnival sideshow without the barriers and no admission fee. But damn it they do have great prices.

Too bad nothing is made in 'merica anymore. I do prefer to deal with local small shops. Never been a mall/box store shopper.

There's already one in Burke and one at Fair Lakes (within 4 miles of downtown Fairfax). Why would they put in another one in that area unless they were going to put n a Super Walmart with a grocery - since we don't have one of those close by.

But no, doubtful they will be putting on in or near Fairfax City any time soon. Maybe Tysons Corner after the service road construction is completed? That seems like a better location.

In Tyson's Corner? I don't think so! The TJmaxx and Marshall's are ghetto enough for that area.

I thought those were ghetto stores until I discovered Rainbow in Arlington and DTLR in DC and Maryland. Nothing gets as ghetto as those stores.

Hmmm. Close Bloom (waste of a store). Knock the wall down between the old Expo and Bloom. That gives you your Wal-Mart Supercenter. And it gets around the Fairfax County zoning limitation of 88,000 sq. feet for combo stores.

Darn WM beat me.watch it, that location where the Home Depot owned home design place was in Fairfax City does seem like a good location. with a trailer park right next door!
But with the Fair Lakes store just a few miles away would they close that one? Walmart is noted for that kind smy of stuff ain't it. Leave a big hole at Fair Lakes.

Do you whippersnappers remember the Zayre's and Kmart and Woolworths that use to be in the Tysons Corner area so long ago

I've wondered if Walmart has ever considered a program to educate stupid people about bringing their kids shopping at 1 am ? Personally I think these parents should be tagged. And it ain't just new arrivals partaking in this practice.

Will a Walmart in that Fairfax City location drive the Kmart out of business? Walmart should just offer to buy the Kmart out. Better location. I believe Sears/Kmart ain't in very good shape these days. Then again how many of us are

For me it was more like where can I go to be alone at 1 am when my kid won't sleep! I often shopped at Walmart and left the kids at home with my husband. There was no way I would actually take them there with me!

Yes Bloom is out and Super Wal-mart is in... But that site is next to Fairfax City not in it.... for those who keep saying it's in the city.

Still nothing slated for the old Circuit City site...

And the old AML building they are talking about 300 apartments going in right across the street from the "New Wal-mart"

NICE! Like traffic is not bad enough in that area!

Are you talking about the site where the Home Depot Expo store used to be located? Interesting.

I guess the old Circuit City location may not be occupied for a while since HH Gregg decided to opt for the old CompUSA location in the Fair Lakes area instead.

I remember going to the K-Mart in Tysons during the 87/88 time-frame. They actually had a wine section in that store and sold Dom Pérignon for about $98.00 a bottle at the time. It, however, was in a locked glass case - unlike the other cheaper wines and champagnes.

Walmart needs a 24 hour supercenter somewhere within 15 miles of here (I'm in Centreville). I am usually up pretty early and would LOVE to breeze through walmart at 4am to grab groceries, etc while everyone else is sleeping....especially on Friday payday mornings! The one in Manassas Mall is nice, but by 6am, especially on fridays or 1st of the month (payday/check cashing days) the store is ALREADY crowded. If something pops up in the middle of the night my only option around here is walgreens- nice that they have a lot of stuff, but not quite walmart.

Oh and if someone would LOVE to make some money here's a business idea- a 24-hour car repair/basic car parts place (like batteries, hoses, etc but sold at discount prices, not we-bought-it-from-vendor-for 50 and will charge you 90 for it prices like all places mark up their parts.

When my friend had an emergency and needed to be picked up and I hopped in my car at 2am and my car wouldn't start, walmart was not open for me to buy a battery (i got it jumped to start but knew I needed a battery) and i didn't want to risk driving all the way to fredericksburg on just alternator at that time of night so I ended up calling my friend a cab home and paying with it with my credit card- coulda spent that $60 and went and got a new battery instead!

I refuse to shop at Walmart for several reasons. Their cheap Chinese
crap does not appeal to me. They fight against unions constantly and
at one time, Hillary Clinton was on it's Board of Directors. They also
put mom and pop stores out of business and most notably in more
rural areas. Screw'em. BTW, if they locate at the old Home Depot
Expo Center it will be an easy commute for their illegal alien employees
who live next door in the trailer park.

1) What's wrong with fighting unions? Unions were a great thing 40-50 years ago when it came to providing a safe work environment in manufacturing situations. Today, unions are a farce. I don't see a positive benefit that they offer. In fact, they collect dues from the unknowing employees, scrape off a nice amount to pay the salaries of union bosses and donate the rest to political campaigns.

2) I do shop at Wal-Mart, but not for clothing. Automotive items (oil, filters, etc.) and food items are purchased, but that's all. The food items purchased are done so at a cost which is much less than Giant or even Shoppers Food Warehouse.

Unions came about in response to appalling labor conditions a century ago. Ever heard the song "I Owe MY Soul to the Company Store"? Yeah, miners were once paid in "scrip" redeemable only at the company store or to pay the rent on your company-owned shack. Child labor and hundreds of other examples of worker exploitation in the old days.

Do you think that human nature has changed? I don't! Why do you think management hates unions so much? Well, I'll tell you, because they can't fuck union workers over like they want to.

I do, however, believe that labor unions went too far in many cases, causing a backlash that is making the pendulum swing back towards 1900. I'm sure glad I don't need to work anymore, it's going to get ugly. We're already starting to see it.

UNIONS: THE FOLKS THAT BROUGHT YOU THE WEEKEND!

I see your point. However, how can other employees - let's say in professional occupations be successful, get paid a competitive salary and benefits, all without the representation of a union? Sure, there are moments when we're asked to put in extra time to get a project on track. But, that's also part of being a salaried individual. Thoughts?

Walmart is going in fairfax city. I work at the fair lakes store eta opening date is middle of 2011. Next to the bloom. Will be a small supercenter that is not open 24 hours a day. They will not close the fair lakes store it is to aleviate the strain of overcrowding at the fair lakes store. Btw fair lakes store is turning into a non 24 hour small super center grand opening date is august 25th 2011.

They really only have two groceries competing near the Home Expo Center location. There's an old Giant that's been recently remodeled but still small by local standards. There's also the Wegmans. All the Asians will still go to H Mart and Lotte down the street because of the better produce and seafood.

Wal-Mart should just take over the Bloom space in Fairfax City. If Wal-Mart really is going to put a mini-Supercenter there, Bloom is fucked. Bloom is going to be fucked too in Fair Lakes when the Supercenter opens there...

The K-Mart across the street will be hammered, too. What would be the reason to shop there - unless someone wanted Craftsman tools or appliances?

So we will get fed up since we're really going to Costco or Fair Lakes and pull in to the Bloom/Walmart/Havertys parking lot. Its always pretty empty. Just not good to go to in the dark. Building permit approved at the old Home Expo Store. Now lets talk snobs. Anybody who is honestly going into Walmart to buy staple items not junk made in China (canned goods, personal care items, stationary, cleaning products) that you find in any other store knows it is cheaper. In this economy even snobs should shop there they must be hurting in the pocketbook, too. whatever is going in the home expo site, be it a walmart or something else, some construction activity seems to have started with several large dumpsters outside the building

i hate that bloom. something always happens to fuck up the shopping experience at that location. so i avoid it. i sort of think bloom purposely exiles their worst employees to that store. can't see why its still in business it always seemed so empty

Here's a map showing the boundary between the city (white) and the county. Go to the top left, near section 57-3.

It's in the County. "sumguy" says to look at a map - may want to look at a map yourself. It's a quirk in the line between the City and the County - for example, the K-Mart across the street is in the City, but go down a little further to the Burlington Coat Factory, and that's in the County. There are a couple of other places where the line "jiggles" a little. For instance, did you know that in the shopping center where Trader Joes is (Pickett Shopping Center, I believe), the row of stores running from the cd trading store down past Chuck E Cheese has another quirk: about 10 feet of the store frontage is in the City, the back is in the County. Very strange.

"wealthy snobs" Really??? We are the last vestiges of the normal folks here in the NOVA area. An eclectic mix of white and blue collar families with a great tie in to a small college town.

Come on over, seriously there are no snobs here. Well I take that back we set the invisible fence at the Lamb Center. But we do donate :-)

Not strange. Stupid. Royal pain in the ass for anyone wanting to lease there. They have to go through both governments to do it.

Look, this isn't that complicated:

The OLD Home Expo Design store (next door to Bloom) is NOT, repeat, NOT in the City of Fairfax. It's Fairfax County.

That IS, repeat, IS a Wal-Mart being built there.

If anyone doubts it is going to be a Wal-Mart, just go there and read the stormwater permit sign in front. It says... "Applicant: Wal-Mart".

We in Fairfax City are not golf shirt wearing, Polo playing idiots who would not save money (if we had all that much) by going to Walmart especially if they have groceries that can compete with Giant or Wegmans...so shut up about what you don't know!

This last post is rediculous. I have lived in the City of Fairfax for 50 years. It is a terrific place to live. There are people of all cultures and family incomes throughout Fairfax. We've had K Mart here for many, many years. We need a Wal Mart. I know an awful lot of people in the City of Fairfax who LOVE Wal Mart! I'm sorry if you've come across someone in Fairfax who made you think we are "snobs". You couldn't be more wrong!! w

I heard the walmart opening next to bloom is going to be a "small" discount store walmart and the one in fair lakes is going to become a super walmart. I mean anyone that has gone recently into the Fair Lakes one has noticed how it is being renovated and reconstructed. It is said to open around october or so. I know for a fact that a lot of the people in the westmore neighborhood are not very pleased with the construction because it will generate a lot of traffic inside the neighborhood. On the other hand, I am sure they will get lots of business form the trailer park people.

YES, I SAW THE PERMIT. THE AREA AROUND EXPO IS COVERED FOR RENOVATION AND PERMIT BELONGS TO WALMART. RIGHT NEXT TO BLOOM SUPERMARKET.

This will suck, Fairfax City has old town look, this giant shoping place will ruin the style.

I am not happy that permit was issued witout consulting to the citizens.

"walmart opening next to bloom is going to be a "small" discount store walmart "

I doubt it. If you ahve ever been in Expo store, the area is huge..Walmart will use every square inch of the place I bet..

The city grocery stores feel sold out on this one.
Is it that the city beancounters feel it's revenues go to FFx Corner/Fair Lakes instead? White flight about to take off.....

Wal-Mart is going in where the Expo Design Center was (next to Blooms).

Blooms and the future Wal-Mart are in the county, along with the Waples Mobile Home Park.

Wal-Mart is going in in Tysons where the old Moore Cadillac is. It will be a smaller store.

So new Wal Marts in Tysons, Fairfax City, AND Dulles Expo. And the one if Fair Lakes will be Super Wal Mart. Wal Mart is taking over Fairfax.

The one in Tysons Corner will be primarily a supermarket. There's currently only a Harris Teeter in that area.

I do not believe Wally World detracts from the "old town" feel of old town Fairfax at all. Maybe because it's not located I old town but a section of Lee Hwy that is nothing but commercial space, strip after strip.

I probably won't shop there as it's likely to be a total cluster cuss. Forget about buying groceries there, for some reason the idea
scheeves me.

As far as the sweeping generalizations (stepford or otherwise) about City of Fairfax - I totally disagree. The Real Housewives of Oakton will probably go incognito to shop at Wally World ;)
