I think maybe Bloom wanted too much for Walmart to buy out their remaining lease. As I recall, that property is owned by Dwoskin. Instead, Walmart will just open up and slowly steal over the Bloom customers until Bloom is forced to close that store. Then, Walmart will get a new lease offering on that space for a song.

That's just my view.

Fairfax County ordinances prevent any new single retail space over 75,000sf from being created without a public hearing. The WalMart space is 90,000 but since they didn't expand from the old Expo Center space, they were exempt. If they took over Bloom, it would have been considered a new space and they would have had to have a public hearing - which WalMart tries to avoid at all costs.

I'm guessing they settle in for a few years and suck away Bloom's business, then take them over. They'll still need a public hearing, but it is less likely to stir up all the NIMBYs since they will just be expanding the existing WalMart at that point instead of building a new one.

That traffic light at Rust/#29/Jermantown RD is a mess everyday. The WallMart will jam up the only way out of the shopping center. It is a mess now, with "just Bloom". Retiming the light (longer-cycles) in order to empty the traffic attempting to leave & vica versa must be studied more carefully. As it is, all along #29, The traffic lights are not sync'd. One light will turn green, 75' later the next traffic light stops you. (often with a yellow light that is a milliSecond long, then red ! WTF!

V.D.O.T. & Ffx.-Co & Fairfax City "TRAFFIC~ENGINEERS" start working together and smooth this mess out! WALLMART COMETH!

While further from the main highway than most of their locations, that would kick ass in that area. Walmart, fine, Cracker Barrel, now that's a fine idea.

I am glad to see a walmart come into this city. I can't see paying the higher prices at a local merchant, that sells the same products, that too are made in China by 10 year olds. In case you haven't noticed "consumers" most everything is made in China anymore. If not there, some other 3rd world country because we have outpriced ourselves to be competative in the world marketplace.

I believe it will have groceries. I wonder how much road rage will go on in that parking lot.

Has anyone ever seen a clean K-Mart? This is a serious question, because I have never seen one that is clean.

A Major redesign of the "EXIT out of Walmart/Bloom" (Rust Rd/Jermantowen/Lee Hwy) is needed NOW! Backed up one block and tight curbs, poor flow and short timed lights everywhere. It has not opened YET!. Just try to leave walmart & not crash...quick~ merging "--Catch the traffic light". really need to break down some curbs and aim the flow north away from Bloom/Walmart in a more direct 3 lane flow. This is bad. overflow will attempt to exit at Chillis and accidents there already every 2 days. no lights and 4 lanes@direction. Walmart, you want flow right ??? FIX THIS NOW!

Walmart was once a small business too. Sam Walton turned it into a huge success, a multi-billion dollar company.

American business is the next closes thing to war. Every small business has the same opportunity to do what Walmart did. This is FREE ENTERPRISE!!! America is a CAPITALISTIC SOCIETY!!!

Walmart usually pays more than minimum wage. Probably closer to $8.50 an hour. Many years ago, they paid an extra $1 per hour if you worked Sunday

I just left the new Wal-Mart and the parking lot is a MESS!
After looking at the grocery prices I came away with the
conclusion that Bloom may as well go ahead and close up now.
I try to buy American goods as often as possible so I won't
be buying anything else but groceries and ammunition. (No guns
for sale though) There were so many women with several children in
tow (and out of control) that it was sometimes difficult to
navigate the aisles. There were actually some clerks who speak
English but today was the Grand Opening. No shortage of customers
who reek of curry. It won't be long until e-mails start circulating
with pics of Fairfax City Wal-Martians as there were plenty of
Obese women who stink and wear cheap perfume. Details as they
become available.

Went to the new Walmart other day. it's going to be opened 24 hours a day. interesting staff did they bring them in from s.e. d.c.?
is the end finally near for the waples mobile home park

saw some old county cops lounging and eyeballing customers when i was there

i didn't think county still had cops in there 40's on the streets

hmmm is the county kind of sticking it to fairfax city? sort of seems the traffic control needs of the area fall under the auspices of fairfax city despite the walmart being in the county

I stopped by the new Walmart this weekend. I didn't realize the space was that big (never went to Expo). The whole left side of the store is dedicated to groceries. It's very clear Bloom won't last long. KMart won't be far behind. Walmart may get the opportunity to scoop up Bloom's side once they tank.

A new Walmart next to the trailer park... those folks must be in heaven right about now.

The parking lot isn't TOO bad. I'd have to go look at it again, but I think the issue is, when turning in, there is traffic movement on the left hand side trying to get into the lot. That needs to be fixed. Otherwise, everything moves fine... the cars coming in are turning right and the cars leaving continue straight and then go left to get to the light.

I agree with you on the Kohl's where Bloom is, that store sucks. And yeah, we aren't snobs, although just an FYI, the decision to bring Walmart was made by city, not county officials. A good job by them, and this one actually so far is pretty good, and not a lot of scary "people of walmart"....yet :)

Once more, it is in the county. The line zigs and zags some.

You'll notice that the in fine article cited above the County approved the building permits. The Fairfax City manager (Sisson) merely commented.

Go look at either the City or County GIS systems if you don't believe me. Rust Road is the line there.

Anyways, it is indeed within Fairfax County limits, however, you may see Fairfax City units on scene in case of an emergency. So who feels the impacts of this crap shoot idea, Fairfax City residents living adjacent (to the east) of this traffic nightmare.

Bloom will have to compete drastically in order to survive.

I made a trek to the new WalMart, just to see what it looked inside, how well did they use the space and if was as bad as people are reporting here.

On the plus side, WM beat Bloom on their prices for a few items I jotted down as much at .90 cents, which for some can really add up.

For me, the convenience of going to Bloom could not be beat. The WM aisles are at least half the size of regular WM's I have been to. Ot make matters worse, the aisles are jammed with families with two or three carts, mostly pushed by children and the carts are full of children. The ethnic make-up is everything you could imiagine. kids were running all over, totally unsupervised and if you heard English being spoken, it was on one of the tv's on display.

I don't plan on going back.

I hear ya, now they beat Bloom on milk by at least 2 dollars! OK the isles are small as hell....some fat bitch (5'4" at least 290lbs)
was standing there reading some crap and there was a column in the isle, that I couldn't squeeze my cart past....I said nicely, please excuse me, she replied...."well cant you see I'm standing here."

I about faced and went down a different isle.

I did help out some milf pick out some nice sporting accessories as the walmart fat fuck there didn't have a clue about anything 'sport' unless it was eating buffalo wings competitively.....

Since I wont be returning, this is my form of anti-establishment.

Small aisles
to put as much product as they can in the store. have you noticed how the space between the cash registers and the end of an aisle has gotten smaller and smaller
frankly its a pain in the ass getting around stores with all the displays they put in aisles and the further and further they bump out the end of aisles

I went into WalMart the other day to get two things. I picked them up and went to the cash register where every line had at least 3 people in it exept one with 2. So I went to that line and the first person started arguing with the clerk about the cost of something, so they had to get a manager come clear it up. The next person was an old Asian lady who took out a puse full of nickles and dimes to pay her $18 total. Right then the cashier next to me opens, so I run over to him, but am cut off by some old fat guy who gets in front of me with 2 items. Again, he starts arguing with the cashier (who is probably the slowest cashier on earth). Eventually he leaves without buying the item they were arguing about. Finally I go up to pay and the credit card machine craps out and the guy can't figure out how to fix it. Again, they call a manager, who shows him that he pushed the wrong button.

The whole experience cost me 20 minutes of my life and saved me no more than 50 cents. Next time, I'm going back to Bloom where I can be in an out through a self-checkout in no time and not have to deal with idiots.

I always wondered. With the putdowns about people having to work at Walmart, who looks down on who? Do the clerks look down on shoppers like the cheap guy above who spent an hour in the store on perhaps $10 of merchandise and saved only 50 cents?

This happens to me pretty often at the Fair Lakes one. Typically, it's the cashier who is just really slow.

Why can't stores all implement the single-queue, multiple cashier approach that saves everyone the guessing about which line is going to have either an idiot customer or idiot/slow cashier?
