I'm retired from a higher level position than what you have tried to imagine there or what you yourself will ever come to occupy. Heck, my first full-time job was as an Assistant VP at a major public utility.

Meanwhile, I was asked on various occasions and by various serious enquirers if I would consider taking a turn in politics. But the work I was doing precluded it, and once I retired, it was a quick and easy thing to decide that I could contribute more as a well-rested private citizen than as a haggard and beleaguered candidate for anything.
