No, I wouldn't keep a male or female teacher, administrator or support worker in proximity to children if there is reasonable evidence to conclude that he/she may be guilty of a serious crime. I would suspend that person, with pay, until there was a trial and he/she was found guilty or innocent. If they were found guilty I'd say throw the book at them. However, my main issue is procedural.

The Fairfax County authorities, the school system and police, have denied a teacher with 13 honest and responsible years of service, any pay while the investigation and charging is playing out, impacting his and his family's welfare, and he has had to pay out of his pocket for a lawyer and bail while this process moves forward. If he was considered innocent until proven guilty, he would have continued to be paid to stay at home while he gets a "speedy" trial and his privacy would be as protected as that of the supposed victim until the trial (where his name would necessarily have to be exposed).

Instead, his name, photo and home address was splashed across the Internet thanks to the Fairfax County Police as if he was already found guilty after a trial. Sean is going to have a long uphill slog to get his name, reputation and self-confidence back when either the charges are dismissed or he is found not guilty in a trial (and mark my words, it will be one of these outcomes). This doesn't pass the "what if this happened to me" test for fairness for any citizen.

Fairfax County Public Schools policy states they have to hold Sean's pay in an interest-bearing escrow account until the case is adjudicated. When he's found not guilty, they'll repay him with whatever pitiful interest you get these days in any account. FCPS is also on the hook for Sean's "reasonable" legal expenses to defend himself. But these payments are after the fact - the damage is being done every day he's held up to public scorn and ridicule in spite of being an innocent man in the eyes of the law. His name and reputation are being dragged through the mud when we don't yet know whether he did it or not.

That's all I'm saying.

Well, I have seen NO logical reasoning, or excuse for the current procedures by anyone who has posted here so far.

My Dad eventually came on the field and tried to calm my coach down which eventually succeeded when the other coach called the police.

My coach was eventually banned from ever coaching in Chantilly for the rest of that season. Don't know if it was an indefinite ban but he was one truely fucked up coach. This behavior would be an anomoly and would have been big news in the soccer community. Can you tell us the season that it happened and possibly the name of the coach?

it was during the Spring '01 season. I can't remember the coaches name but i think we were the only U16 team from Chantilly that season in the SFL. There may have been 2 teams but no more than 2.

It is probably good news that the thread has gone to sleep since it produced more heat than light. There were claims that the accuser had recanted and there were claims that a plea bargain was in the works. So far, neither has come to fruition. We just need to be patient and let the judicial system get it right.

We had an athletic director that didn’t want trouble so nothing ever came of it ,and he was made the swim coach. Then he was accused by other coaches at a Va. Beach swim meet of being drunk and buying beer for the swimmers, again nothing happened to this so-called good guy. It’s a shame that a young girl had to pay the price, because this creepy guy kept getting away with very bad behavior.

His teams have won a lot of games. In that sense he is a good soccer coach. But other coaches manage to win without going on tirades, being carded, being called in front of the WAGS R&D committee, etc.

OK Mother Teresa. The 1997 behavior that you have alleged and the current situtiaon have NOTHING in common. I guess the other parents on the team were some pretty lousy parents if you were the only one to say anything. Times of changed Mother Teresa. How old were the kids he was coaching? What youth club? How, unless you have an ax to grind, could you equate that behavior with THE MOST dispicable crime that can be committed anyway?

In addition, he has PASSED 2 lie detector tests conducted by the FBI and Fairfax County police. The little girl has not paid any price caused by the actions of Mr. Lanigan. Although I feel sorry for the little girl and the consequences of her lying, it is Mr Lanigan who has paid the price for an ovezealous police detective that listened to only to what she wanted to hear and who she wanted to hear it from.

Karma is a you know what, and you would probably be better off biting your tongue until this man is actually convicted of commmitting a crime. In addition, you should hope and pray that you or your husband do not find yourselves int he same predicament. ANYONE, who works with or coaches kids could find themselves in this same situation and their live ruined and reputation ruined.

Mr. Lanigan is the father of duaghters one year younger and one year older than the ALLEGED victim. He is coach, although not right now because of this mess, of a U13 girls soccer team and NOT ONE family pulled their duaghter of his team. We all know him, support him, and stand behind him.

So many of these comments are beyond the pale considering the story as reported. It's total crap that the teacher would pick her up and take her away, with a class full of witnesses. If I taught, I swear, I'd have a nanny cam going in the classroom/gym. I feel sorry for this guy, if it's pursued, I can only hope I'm called for jury duty.

Has there been any update on all this? I saw the post about the May 24 trial date, just wondering if there has been any additional information, other than the the rantings and ravings of his detractors and supporters.

I have played for sean lanigan. let me tell you that i cannot understand how he is a teacher in the first place... He would actually joke about molesting little girls during practice, pick up prostitutes during tournaments, and show the team pictures of naked girls he would take on his drunken escapades. He should and probably will be convicted and I hope to god he rots in jail.

Sean lanigan is going to get what he deserves soon. This has been a long time coming.

I will be there in court tommorow. Im sure the trial will be continued over a few weeks at least. It woud be great to see this Lannigan peice of garbage get locked up for at least a few years.

What happened today?

He was cleared of all charges and freed. An arrest warrant has been issued for the little liar who accused him.

No, he punched her because he found out that she was having an affair with him. He did not realize that they were both married. When he realized that, he knew that the cop was having an affair with him.

Having daughters that have played soccer for years, I've talked to numerous people who knew the guy, including former players and they all don't believe the allegations. Supposedly this guy has been nothing but a class act. I'll tell you right now these stories of him and prostitutes are absolute garbage or there is no way he'd be teaching/coaching this long with the pretencious mothers of Fairfax County.

I have also talked to parents who have a hard time believing the allegations. But, some disagree with the "class act" characterization. Multiple parents have said that he is a hot head around the soccer field. He can get away with it because many of the "pretencious mothers of Fairfax County" only care about whether little Mia or little Landon play D1 travel soccer and play in college.

Thanks for the translation effort... I had to laugh because the clarification didn't clarify anything. The cop found out he was married? Wouldn't he have known that on his wedding day? Please 'einstein' go to some adult education classes on writing so you can help yourself (or get some tutoring if you are still in school)... that is just awful.

bogus charges

The biggest problem is that NO ONE is disputing the fact that he picks up 12 year old girls and carries them around on his shoulders. That in itself is a major problem, I don't care how "fun" that makes this guy, he has a problem.

Yes I read the article in the Post today. He may get out of this one because it is "He said, She said". He has been totally inappropriate with both staff and students. I fell that FCPS will not renew his contract and will let him go after this. After reading all the posts on this site, who would want him teaching their children?

Not sure whether the guy is guilty of a crime or not but he's guilty of stupidity. Teachers are so vulnerable, and if he is innocent this case just shows that a kid (boy or girl) can make up anything and the school system has to treat it like it's real. Because,even if it's 1 chance in a 100,000, if it is real the system would be crucified if they didn't follow up. If he's found not guilty, I don't think the system can refuse to renew his contract. They of course can transfer him to some other place in the county, even into a nonteaching position.

Used to be a teacher in FCPS, and was on the wrong end of a bogus claim, and eventaully exhonerated, but in the long run I blamed myself for not being more careful. You can bet that after that, I never even talked to a student alone or allowed a student to hug me or even came close. It sounds to me like this guy definately was over the line. I don't know anything about his coaching or the other stuff about naked pictures, and all that, but from just a teaching standpoint, he was putting himself in jeopardy. I'd be surprised if he hadn't been counseled by admin about it though. If not, then he either wasn't too bad or they, the admn, wasn'it doing its job.

On the other hand, it does seem (and this just based on observations) soccer coaches are much more prone to wackos. I saw a high school soccer coach that in school was a very low-keyed type of guy but once the game started he simply lost it, yelled and screamed at the officials, then his players, then the other team's palyers, even yelled things at the other coach. I think, as someone earlier alluded, that these guys/gals get away with it because there's a large segment of parents who are certain their little Mia or Justin are going to be Div 1 stars. You see some of the same mentality in lacrosee, boys mostly, not so much in girls

I read the WP article too and was surpised that her friend testified that she had said she wanted him to get into trouble for talking to her about bullying other kids while being a safety officer. That's enough for reasonable doubt.

He's gonna be dragged through the coals, but he will get off on this charge.

He should never had put himself in this position by picking up any student, if he hadn't done that, he would have been in the clear, but there was enough to prosecute it and follow up on the charge, but not enough to convict. 30 years, man, thats a long time for picking a girl up and having it misinterpreted.

Rapists get 10 or 15.

This has been the strangest case from start to finish and I hope, when Sean is cleared, he goes after everyone involved in civil suits. There is no way it should have made it this far. The Grand Jury system is an absolute joke, and Fairfax COunty Public Schools needs to do more to back its people. I believe that the COunty will need to make restitution for this to Sean, but that wouldn't be enough for me.

I agree with Clear Him and Sue, if this turns out to be bogus he desrves restitution. I'm not a lawyer so don't know who is vulnerable though. I do know that, teachers are not liable if they report a case of child absue, even if it turns out to be nothing, so maybe the shcool system will get off scot free. And, I defniatly don't know anything about the Grand Jury system in Fairfax Co.

Yet another example of a career being destroyed by accusation alone. Yet another reason why accused should be held to the same anonymity standards as accusers until a conviction is reached. If he did bad things in the past, let accusers make those accusations so he can go to trial for those but from the Post article it is clear that even if there is truth to some of the story it is a far cry from the "laying on top of her" original accusation (which the girl later said didn't happen by the way).

Teenagers make stuff up like adults and toddlers do, it is human nature. But someone's bullshit human nature shouldn't ruin another's life and career if the allegations are false and intentionally harmful. In this case she wanted him fired because he didn't play the music she liked in class. And for that he is in a courtroom, pictured all over the news, with sexual assault allegations. Had his identity as an accused been protected then his life wouldn't be ruined over some kid's intentionally harmful story. If he was guilty, then his picture could go up all over the place and others can come forward if they too were victims so charges can be leveled for those.

edit: and ironically the victims of these stories are the youth in that one would be nuts, crazy, insane to be a phys ed teacher or anyone that works with youth in this environment where 1) kids think the solution to problems is to get rid of annoying adults with sexual accusations, and 2) a system lets an accusation with that many holes in it get into the press and to trial. I agree with the comments left in the Post article. When the good people don't think it is worth it to risk their lives and careers to help young people, only the bad ones are left.

I say kick that girl out of Fairfax county schools. Also the media(s) releasing him as the bad guy should be sued a certain amount of $$ per each time someone viewed his picture as well as the article.

I say make an example out of this little girl and her family. It's atrocious what some of these allegations do to teachers.

I am exceedingly skeptical of this young girl's claims, but it is not over until it is over.

Has the case gone to the jury yet? Has there been an acquittal? Interesting that the jury has a majority of women. Not surprising - they would be good judges of veracity on these kinds of matters and it appears if the defense did its job in voir dire.

There is something going on behind the scenes here that causes this not to make sense. I wouldn't think a prosecutor would ever put a 12 year old on the stand without knowing exactly what she would say. Ditto for her 10-13 year old friends who testified. There must be something driving the prosecution of this case beyond the mere facts alone.

There is a difference between bad judgment and immaturity (which the school system needs to handle) and criminality. I am at a loss as to the prosecutor's mindset here - the girl's testimony and that of her buddies doesn't strike me as a case I would want to have brought. Weak or non-existent cases make it worse for real victims.

I too, am concerned about reputational damage - there are some smart folks on here (and well, some of the others too) - withholding judgment is a key thing here to remember.

You are right and he may get convicted, but all of that can be done with anonymity of accused until it is over. If he is found guilty he'll get and deserve every punishment.

These are not allegations. they are true. I played for lannigan and he showed us dozens of naked pictures of his wife. he is an extremely perverted man.

I would also utilize my legal right to go after anyone who slandered me to show that it will not be tolerated and, just for your knowledge, you are not legally allowed to make criminal allegations against private citizens.

"wait a minute" - I agree, there is something peculiar about this. Makes you wonder if the prosecution was forced to bring the charges for political reasons but knows they can't win.

All the other allegations might or might not be true, such as the nude pics of his wife, drinking with his players, etc, all of which should get him fired and brought up on charges, if true. However, that's not what he's on trial for.

There really must be some behind the scenes manuvering going on.
