For the sake of the Lanigan family let's let this therad die.

I will say again, that it is incomprehensible that FCPS did not conduct an investigation of its own, either prior to or concurrent with the police investigation. For them to say his teaching position is dependant on the FCPS investigaiton is absurd.

There is something else going on here at FCPS! I even sent an email to the school board member from my district to the same affect.

It's very sad that sean will not be allowed to teach in FFX county anymore. Sean is now paying the price for the mistakes that he made in his younger days.

I heard that the Lanigan's are walking away from their house and renting a place in Burke. If this is true it's very sad.

Way back in 1997 I reported to a Mr. Bruce of Faifax County that this so-called good guy showed topless pictures of his wife to the soccer players (she was a topless dancer)- while at his house to watch game tapes turned on the playboy channel for the players – bought beer for players and more. We had an athletic director that didn’t want trouble so nothing ever came of it ,and he was made the swim coach. Then he was accused by other coaches at a Va. Beach swim meet of being drunk and buying beer for the swimmers, again nothing happened to this so-called good guy. It’s a shame that a young girl had to pay the price, because this creepy guy kept getting away with very bad behavior.

I do not beleive the 12 year old girl either. I am just saying that things would have gone easier for Lanigan if he had not had half a file folder of complaints from parents and others due to his past issues.

Coach Lanigan was my teacher two years ago, he was an awesome teacher and he would never hurt a kid.

This allegation is not "inconceivable" like so many of you ignorant people state. I played for sean for 2 years in mclean. 2 years you get to know your coach extremely well. I traveled all over the U.S and internationally with sean. His behavior on these tournaments were beyond incorporate. I have personally seen sean pick up whores, have drunken rants, and brag (and show pictures) of naked women in his hotel rooms. This guy has a sick sense of humor and multiple personalities. He would act one way around parents and MUCH differently when he was not. He has a disgusting sense of humor and would often joke about screwing little girls durning practice. Not so inconceivable now is it. These particular allegations most likely not did occur. The courts did decide, but say this girl is lying and don't portray sean as a saint, he's far far from it.

They will probably find an excuse. It is sad that we live in a world where teachers cannot hug children innocently (never mind pick them up), but we do. Especially male teachers. And therefore, he was really quite stupid not to be more careful. This situation was a false accusation waiting to happen. And it seemed pretty obvious even from the initial reports that it was a false accusation. 12 year olds do not understand the consequences of their actions. Not really. They might understand that this would get rid of a teacher they don't like, but they don't understand what that really means.They simply do not have the capacity (or the brain development).

As for those who think this girl should now be publically persecuted - SHE'S TWELVE! That's ridiculous. I think her parents and the school should come down on her like a load of bricks. And my guess is, if this teacher was as popular as he sounds, she may well have taken herself down in the process. She will likely lose friends and be a social outcast. She will also make it a lot harder for the teachers who have her in the future to be unbaised against her. And all of that, she probably deserves. Her picture plastered all over the internet - where real perverts can find it? No way! I think there is a very good chance that her family will need to change school systems to avoid serious problems. I feel sorry for the kid - she needs help, not persecution. She has also made herself someone who will probably never again be believed - even if she someday is attacked for real.

It is unfortunate that this teacher's reputation will be forever tarnished, but going to trial was the best thing that could have happened to him once he was publically accused. The prosecutor did him a favor (whether it was intentional or not), because it became very obvious from the trial just how bogus this was.

That said, he really did set himself up for this. You CANNOT, in this day and age, treat students like you do your own kids in terms of tossing them around and tickeling them (as admirable as the sentiment is in some ways). An accusation IS all it takes, and everyone who works with kids knows that. It is not a new development. I hope he has learned something from this, as well. I worked in special ed at one point, and was always worried that I'd have to restrain a flailing child when no one else was around, and would be accused of something inappropriate. I would NEVER have picked up a child to play with them - and I always cringed when a child tried to climb into my lap (young children). And that's sad - a Kindergarten teacher or aide should be able to let kids climb into their lap to read a book without fear, but they can't. I do that with my friends' children, but not as a teacher. It would just be stupid. And it only gets worse as they get older because there is less and less reason to touch them.

I agree with you JG, I believe that Lanigan is not a kid toucher but he put himself in harms way with his childish behavior. Lanigan is simply paying for what he's had coming for some time.

If that is true, indeed it is good news. He'll probably be happier teaching in a High School anyway. And, agree that FCPS should pick up his legal fees, after all the whole mess was a result of his employment by FCPS and since he was acquitted they ought to pay for it.

Lanigan's failure to do so, even if just a slight error in judgment at the time, turned out to be more than just a "slight" error. My guess is that even he would concede at this time that one cannot be too careful.

I don't agree with your legal analysis. Whatever restrictions the court laid down, and whatever and to what extent FERPA and like statutes impose, the fact is that the girl's conduct has made her well known within the school and the community. Anyone other than those with a formal duty to the child will simply be able to point to the common knowledge in the community as a collateral source in the face of any accusation. The girl is in the unfortunate predicament, or so it appears, of not having many feel sorry for her at this point. Or alternatively, they don't care much for her parents, who should have had some ability with foresight here. It can't bode well for socialization, both with other students or with faculty.

FCPS, FCPD, and Department of Family Services never give up.

There was nothing to this case. The guy fought it in court and prevailed.

FCPS takes the position that evidence is not necessary when an accusation will suffice.

The detective violated procedure but nothing will happen as a result.

DFS is determined to make life miserable for this guy if it can.

By the way, I learned recently that I am still under investigation. FCPS and FCPD are still trying to nail me. It ain't gonna happen, Linda, no matter how hard you try.

Scarred by charges, teacher allowed to return to classroom
Lanigan will continue teaching at South Lakes
On Aug. 10, more than two months after he was exonerated in Fairfax County Circuit Court on charges he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old female student, Centre Ridge Elementary School teacher and soccer coach Sean Lanigan was finally told by Fairfax County Public Schools that he could return to work.

Instead of returning to Centre Ridge Elementary School, where he taught for the last 13 years, Lanigan will begin the new school year at South Lakes High School in Reston, according to school officials.

"He was transferred there and will begin the new school year as a teacher there," FCPS spokesman Paul Regnier confirmed on Monday.

Lanigan, who spent more than $100,000 on his defense, will continue to bear scars from the ordeal, including a potentially harmful statement made by the Fairfax County Department of Family Services that could remain part of his official employment record for the next two years.

In a June 10 letter to Lanigan obtained by the Times, the department states that claims made by Lanigan's accuser are "unfounded" and that "a preponderance of the evidence indicates that [the 12-year-old- girl] was not sexually abused" by Lanigan.

The letter goes on to say, however, that "while the evidence assembled does not meet the policy definition of abuse in this instance, the contact you had with [the 12-year-old girl] constituted, at a minimum, an alarming violation of boundaries between yourself and a student."

"What boundaries are those?" asked Bill Cummings, a family friend of Lanigan's who has been corresponding with family services officials as Lanigan's spokesman. "I have been trying to find out exactly where these so-called boundaries are defined in either FCPS regulations or in Virginia code, but to no avail," he said. "This is supposed to be a letter clearing Sean. Instead, that statement is a stain on his record and I can't get a straight answer as to what regulations define what these 'boundaries' are."

The Fairfax County Department of Family Services declined to comment. Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald said the department by policy does not comment publicly on its cases.

Becky Doebler, 37, has her own complaints about both the Department of Family Services and FCPS.

Her daughter, another sixth-grade girl who attended Centre Ridge, was a former friend of Lanigan's accuser and a key witness in his court case.

Becky Doebler claims that shortly after her daughter's friend accused Lanigan of sexual impropriety, Centre Ridge Elementary School Principal James Baldwin invited Fairfax County Police Detective Nicole Christian into the school to interview her daughter without her knowledge.

"That is a direct violation of FCPS regulation 2616.5," she said. "That regulation states that the questioning of students by police officers on school property requires reasonable efforts to secure permission from the student's parents before any questioning occurs."

Doebler said after she learned about the questioning from her daughter, she contacted Baldwin and said she did not give permission for any subsequent interviewing of her daughter while in school.

"But [my daughter] was questioned -- in school -- three more times after that by the same detective," she said.

"Her grades began to fall right about that time," she added. "As a direct result of that stress."

Doebler also claims that soon after her complaints to Baldwin, the Fairfax County Department of Family Services began investigating her.

"They don't have to tell you who filed the complaint," she said. "I still don't know."

Doebler has since taken her daughter out of FCPS and has moved out-of-state.

Regnier said that to his knowledge, Baldwin did not violate any school regulations. "But it is a complicated issue," he said. "I'm not sure how much I am at liberty to discuss."

It would be irresponsible to post names of more of Lanigan's victims on a public forum. It's not those boys (now men) fault that they were some of Lanigans victims. It seems like FCPS handled this thing as well as they could. Maybe Lanigan will man up and just deal with the mess he created.

All parents should be disturbed that the Police Rule the Schools. My son was questioned as a witness, and served a summons to appear as a witness in court while in class. It was done deliberately to intimidate him in front of his peers. Of course it affected his performance. The Officer had ample opportunity to question and serve him before or after class. But try complaining about this - no one cares. School Resource Officers are exempt from this regulation.

You probably should be glad that you did not complain about this impropriety. Look what happened to Becky Doebler. After she complained, DFS started to investigate her.

Parents that send their kids to Fairfax county public schools get what they deserve. Put your childs future above your selfishness and send them to a good private school. There are some wonderful private schools in this area that cost less than 10,000 a year.

Who served the kid? An SRO or deputy sheriff?

All actions have consequences, so maybe you need think more broadly when it comes to assuming that she doesn't have "penalties". Just as Sean suffered damage to his reputation and quality of life by being accused, she will suffer (and clearly already has suffered) damage to her reputation and quality of life for having made the accusations.

What is to prevent her from doing it again? Nothing. She has the freedom to make whatever accusations she wishes to during her life, as we all do. But once a person has proven themselves not to be credible, it is doubtful that they will ever be believed in the future. It's one logical consequence for the action of a false accusation.

It sounds like you have some work to do with healing from your own past experience. Unless you are a colleague, family memeber, or friend Sean no longer needs your support. Exposing his accuser won't help anyone. It will only make you look like an ass.

I gotta say, I agree with GMU Hokie. She should receive the same exposure that the accused did.

His picture was put out to the public. So, even though he was exonerated of the charges, people who recognize him will think, "Oh, that's the guy who was accused of molesting a 12-year old girl." I think people would feel more comfortable around him if he'd been accused of murder.

But, nobody knows who his accuser is. If people knew, they could make sure to not put themselves in situations where she can accuse them, as well.

Sounds to me like this Lanigan needs to find a new line of work. He damn sure wont teach or coach any of my kids. I creeps me out to think this guy is in the same building with my daughter.

Yes, I believe this to be the case. Actually, the school he's now at - South Lakes, mainly had him pushing the lawn mower around the school grounds during a lot of the school day. I guess they haven't really found a way to get him vetted back into the routing of being a gym teacher, yet.

Creeps me out just to think that this sicko is allowed to set foot in any school anywhere.

He's certainly a person who doesn't have the best judgment. Apparently, he was also involved with some coaching activities outside of school in his free time. The team or teams that he was coaching, would, at time travel out of town. It was during these escapades out of town, that he'd find some local 'ho to have relations with. Sure, it's a stretch between having consensual sex with another adult and being accused of inappropriate touching of a minor. However, in some weird sort of way, that just might be the way his M.O. works.

I heard they put extra cameras in the areas where Lanigan works at South Lakes. I bet everyone wishes he would just quit and move to another part of the country.

This thread is bullcrap... I have Lannigan as a teacher right now and he is a good damn teacher. The man was found "NOT GUILTY". I hope he sues the pants off of FCPS

That's the first time I've heard someone say they have had a good P.E. teacher. Mine were horrible when I was growing up. Lazy bastages. Wearing sweats to work as their "uniform". Such a life.
