WOODBRIDGE, Va. - One person is in custody after reports of shots fired at the Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College, police say.

Prince William County Police say they received reports of a student armed with a gun in the main administration building of the campus around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Officers and campus police responded to the scene as an "active shooter" situation, police say.

Emergency lockdown procedures were also in effect on the campus.

Tactical teams are currently conducting a safety sweep on the campus, which is located at 15200 Neabsco Mills Road.

According to the NOVA Web site, 11,000 students attend classes at the Woodbridge campus.

WTOP has a reporter en route and will have more information as it becomes available.

The guy walks in at 2:40 and by 3:40 it seems like the situation is resolved. Quick response from the PWC cops.

Fairfax wouild just be scrambling the chopper in the air here. To be fair, the large Ferlazzo Eatern District HQ building is less than a 1/2 mile from the campus. They could probably have two dozen officers there in less than five minutes.

from insidenova:

One parent who spoke with her daughter on her cell phone said her 18-year-old daughter, Alyssa, was inside a fourth floor classroom when she heard a gun go off in the hallway. She said she saw the gunman walk into the classroom, point the gun at the teacher and approach him.

“She said the teacher told the class to run, and when they did, she said she heard two more gunshots go off,” said Christine Brown, who rushed from Stafford to be with her daughter.

Stay with InsideNoVA.com with the story.

Scary stuff.

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if you don't have some deaths or injuries that simply haven't been reported yet. When shots start going off, those bullets usually end up hitting someone.

That's terrible advice from the teacher.

God damn, how can someone get worked up enough about a community college to pull a gun?

That's the reason he/she was teaching at a community college and not Harvard.

What are the odds now that we are going to see "A Very Special Episode of 'Community'" for the February sweeps.

Bad news, it will suck. Good news, maybe Chevy Chase's character "gets it."

He's probably not from Westfield HS. Graduates of Westfield HS are good shots and takeout multiple victims.

And yes, that's damn funny!

Back in the day somebody got worked up enough about NOVA in Annandale to place several bombs inside the school's lockers.

I dont know if any detonated though.

How the hell do you miss someone who's across the room when you have a RIFLE, anyway? That motherfucker should get 25 years for attempted murder and ten years for poor marksmanship.

How dare you. What do you know about being in a situation like this. You know nothing. NVCC is one of the top community colleges in the nation. You have no place to judge anyone. Your so busy trying to blame someone you didn't take the time to think "Thank God everyone is safe." You just jumped right into blaming someone. How selfish are you, you think you know everything. You're just a bully.

This classroom was full of a bunch of cowards. Why did someone not get up and tackle the gunman after he fired his first shot? He had a BOLT ACTION RIFLE! Not an M16! There was plenty of time to take him down before he chambered another round. Oh well, at least he missed twice and then his gun jammed.

How is that terrible advice? What an absolutely stupid thing to say!

One moment the woman is teaching a class and the next, someone is trying to kill her with a high power rifle. How calm, cool, and collective would you be in this situation? The professor realized that she was the target and while the gunman's focus was on her, she instructed the class to flee. Under the circumstances this woman's actions were nothing short of heroic.

Actually, I would be. It's pretty simple. You can do one of two things:

1) Attack the shooter, take a chance of getting shot.
2) Sit back and do nothing, get shot, and die.

Its alot easier to shoot someone whos running away than someone who is charging at you, especially with a rifle.

Especially when he has a bolt action rifle! Just charge at him immediately after he fires his first round, and there is no way he is going to chamber another round and get a shot off at you before you tackle him (especially considering how inexperienced he was)!!

obviously so inexperienced that he did not know how to clean his rifle, causing it to jam. He then pussied out and sat in the hall and gave himself up. He could have at least done the respectable thing and offed himself.

Yeah you pretty much suck at marksmanship if you jam and a bolt action rifle and can't get it unjammed.

Because people need to learn from the mistakes of the past.

9/11 might have been avoided if passengers had taken decisive action immediately. However, they understandably didn't, because prior hostage situations usually ended with the plane landing somewhere. In the wake of 9/11, passengers have reacted to problems on planes in a more direct manner, assuming that doing nothing is what'll get them killed.

The VA Tech shooter got most of his victims while they were running or trying to hide, and set the standard for what can happen during a mass-shooting incident. Everyone should assume that inaction is going to get them killed just as quickly as attacking the shooter. If this kid actually knew what he was doing, it would have went very differently.

Cho was at the door to the classrooms and there wasn't much anyone could do. Nowhere to run. Also, a few brave people died barricading the door to the room to allow others to escape, saving those people's lives. It's not as though no one did anything.

MrMephisto,
What action do you believe the professor should have taken? However, I agree with you that in the VT situation many lives could have been saved if some courageous students rushed the gunman. What was the guy (Cho) 5'6" 120lbs.? (I am unaware of actual casualties of those running away in the VT tragedy.)

To "Rambo": A bolt action rifle can be re-chambered in fractions of a second by an experienced marksman. Rushing such a person may not be as easy as you would think. One thing that we can all agree upon and appreciate, is the fact that fortunately this (NOVA) gunman was so inept that no one got hurt.
