Actually, it is not the job of teachers to raise the children of others.
Parents are to be the primary educators of their own children, but so many entrust them to strangers.
However, any teacher who could not see the kid turning in his text books without explanation as a red flag for something like this, clearly either does not care or is close to clueless.

I am not a member of fairfax underground nor do I want to get involved in this rather twisted community. But I want to leave some of my insight on this forum, as there seem to be many different opinions (some just plain sick) that have no common ground. While I do think that the school has significant responsibility over checking up on student mental wellness and offering outlets of support, the school shouldn't be pointed at for the "amount of homework" or "number of tests" they give out. Yes, some students may feel very pressured to get excellent grades and go to a "prestigious" college, but do you really think the average high school student will kill themselves because they don't get the grades they want? Because they have to study more than they would like? If that is REALLY the case, why is it that there has not been a single suicide amongst students at TJ for the past 10? 15? years? I know that Woodson and other top FCPS high schools are very competitive as well, but the amount of stress, rumors, and college competition that goes on at TJ is just incomparable. I know, I went there.

There are many different factors that go into a student's decision to take their own life, whether it is poor mental health, bullying, lack of affection, or socioeconomic state. While it is incredibly tragic and FCPS SHOULD make robust efforts to recruit EXPERIENCED mental health professionals and make treatment more accessible, solely blaming homework and competitiveness of a school is not the answer.

Because, like you, current TJ students still cheat. It's an accepted part of their culture.

Suicides are for people who see no acceptable way out of their predicament. TJ students can cheat their way out as a socially acceptable solution.

That's the difference.

Fairfax Villa is in the Woodson pyramid. Woodson HS is going through serious concerns of student sucicides and a special task force has been created to address this issue. Now we have huge concerns with the administration at Fairfax Villa. It looks like the whole issue needs to be addressed at a higher level. Involvement of parents is paramoun.
