Me and a couple of friends are hanging out this weekend and we're interested in exploring a storm drain water system, can anybody give me a nearby address?

I remember when I was a kid my friends and I would check out the drain system that is in the Sequoia community on Buckman Rd. It's been 35 years since I've been in what it's now called...........SHITHOLE community but if I remember correctly it's not far from the Community Center there. It's in an open type field.

Used to do this in Arlington when I was a kid.

We knew where there was an EXTREMELY large opening that was at least 10' x 8' or bigger. We would ride out 20" bikes in the sewer and keep going until you had to sit on the bike and stoop over, probably under 48". We would be miles up in the sewer system and we would actually take super soakers and water filled fire extinguisher with us and wait for the elementary and middle school buses to leave school and would hose the buses as they passed while the kids had the windows up.

Could you see the kids on the bus being hosed from the sewer where they had no idea WTF was going on!!

We would also pop up some of the sewer lids on the sidewalk area and people would be WTF.

So much crazy stuff we used to do!!

Do you know the difference between a sewer system and a storm drain system?

We mapped our neighborhood storm drain system, used it frequently to stash findings and take shortcuts through the neighborhood. This was back when it was safe for kids to roam around outside in Fairfax County, those were the days.

"Sewer" is like "Kleenex"

Yes I know the difference there are Storm Sewers and Sanitary Sewers.

We were in the Storm Sewers.

Alexandria City. But you may encounter more than you could imagine. What exactly are you expecting or hoping to discover?

1) We used to take the Wakefield Drive entrance onto the Truro Trails down to the first bridge and hang a right to enter the drainage sewer system below Kenwyn Court.

About 100 yards up the tunnel there is big opening and a room to party and the pipes split in two directions.

Go right and you can go about 3/4 mile until the pipes get too small to crawl through.

Go left and you can go about 1 mile all the way to near Wakefield Elementary school & 236.

2) There is another storm water system you can enter off Wakefield Chapel & Chapel Drive that runs under the NVCC parking lot. Starts out small and increasingly gets bigger to where you can stand up and walk in 8 foot diameter pipes. It will take you for almost a mile.

3) There is a cool drainage pipe at the base of the dam at Burke Lake park. You go about 130 yards in and there is a huge square shaped room which goes up about 60-70 feet. There are rungs on the wall you can climb to the top. That is the spill over drain for Burke Lake. Great spot to catch Crappie.

Happy Trails.

Bend over.

Feel around until you find an opening.

Mark the opening with a flag.

Go get your friends & invite them to go exploring!!!

Go today. With all the rain falling you are sure to drown! That would be cool!
