Lee chapel road name change
Posted by: rowe ()
Date: October 17, 2016 08:56AM

Named in honor of General Robert E. Lee the Lee chapel was burned in a controlled burn by the Lorton volunteer fire department in the 1950s as the homes in the area were being bought up to make way for the Burke national airport that was never built and was re-located to Loudoun county.
Now we need to decide on a new name for Lee chapel road as we can no longer allow this racist and ignorant name to exist. Any suggestions ?

Another issue is that George Mason was a slave owner at his home at Gunston Hall. That school needs a new name too.

Bobby Lee was a hero to the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you want to start re-naming "offensive" roads, perhaps you should consider how Backlick Road got its name...

Well aren't you just the bigot.

He was a great leader, highly respected and a man living in his times trying to do what he thought was right. He prayed for his enemies. He could not stomach the idea of fighting and going against his own neighbors, sons, friends, and family. If it were me, neither could I.

Let's start with America.....Amerigo Vesspucci took 200 Bahamians for slave trading, then will work our way through every State, county, street and school.

Not true. There is a statue of Gen. Buckner (CSA, also USA) in front of the GSA Building around 19th and K Street, NW.

That property was part of the Lee estate, his mother died at Ravensworth. It was properly named.

If they want to start changing names, start with Fairfax County, named for Lord Fairfax.

Lee was just a man living in his times, that didn't want to go to war against his neighbors, family, or anyone in his beloved Virginia. That was his sovereignty and he was loyal to his principles. Great General BTW and spent the rest of his years trying to unite people as opposed to our current leaders who are all into class warfare.

History has been written ..General Lee betrayed the Union

you cannot rewrite it..the only difference is that all the sons of those confederates are dying off now..

soon they will be dead and the legacy they attempted to preserve will be dead.

The school names and roads will all be changed as they should..

Love live the union!

God bless the U.S.A. and good riddance to the confederate states that never were

Who decides what's forgivable? You?

Before, during, and after the War, this Union army (led by many of the same generals, including Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Custer) used even worse tactics to massacre Native Americans in what we euphemistically call "The Indian Wars." It would be more accurate to call it a mass murder—a virtual genocide—of Native Americans, including helpless old men, women, and children in their villages. The eradication of the Plains Indians from1865 through 1866, for example, was carried out to seize land for the western railroads. So the Union army was hardly the forerunner of the civil rights movement, as many would have us believe….

And the blacks didn't mind helping at all…men just living in their times?
"After spending four years and losing hundreds of thousands of lives fighting to end slavery and bring the Confederate states back into the Union, the United States spent the next 25 years fighting to subjugate the Plains Indians.
Among the soldiers who fought in the Indian Wars were four regiments of African-Americans, the famed Buffalo Soldiers. I wonder if they recognized the irony in what they were doing."

Might as well come full circle…
Nelson Mandela, during the Rivonia trial, it had emerged that he advocated cutting off the noses of blacks viewed as traitors or white collaborators. His wife Winnie—whom he divorced in 1996—had during the 1980s advocated that turncoats be punished by “necklacing”—execution by placing a gasoline-filled tire around the victim’s neck and setting it alight.
So he wins a Peace Prize and had Barak Obama, Hillary and half the world's dignitaries at his funeral.

But damn…those Confederates!

Nice shot. and very point on, The Indians don't hold the Buffalo soldiers in very high regard. They took in many runaway slaves only to become victims of the black buffalo soldiers they sheltered as part of the underground railroad/

Then strip asshole, guess what, The south needed slavery for the cotton to make clothing, once the Cotton Gin came about it made slavery useless,(Robert E Lee even saw that and got rid of his slaves prior to the war) Even today your sour little ass needs Mexicans to have your Salads because you cannot get some crops with Automation it still takes manual labor. But the main focus of the war was not over slavery, lets see, George Washington had Slaves, Thomas Jefferson had slaves and even Children with them, but the rights of the States where at risk, just imagine what your seeing today with the Election of 2016, The south just might Rise Again...
Learn a little history before its all GONE...

If Lee, Jefferson and Washington's roles were reversed. Lee would've been heading up the Continental Army and been the 1st President. Washington would be the commander of the army of Northern VA and Jefferson the president of the Confederacy. Your loyalty was for your home state and not the Federalists.

"Given that President Washington federalized state militia and marched them into western Pennsylvania to put down the Whiskey Rebellion -- the U.S. troops placed under the command of "Light Horse Harry" Lee. later to be father of one Robert Edward Lee"

you would assume he would go South, but he would want to maintain a Unified Government after getting independence from the British, but we are also placing almost 100 years between each event, and Lots change in 100 years, So I would guess North, but what if the South had won? Slavery was a passing fad at the time, and would become irrelevant due to advances in technology and Industry.

Prior to the Civil war , Many Confederate Generals where highly decorated Union Soldiers, they chose their Home States as a common Bond, if we talk treason, then anyone who fought for Independence would be considered a Traitor against the Crown.

Yup, do away anything to do with Washington and Jefferson. They were traitors against the Brits and the same thing would hold true today if they were in command during the the War Between the States.

I'm sure you have awakened many mornings just distressed that your commute takes you down Lee Chapel road. Horrors of horrors! My God, this has to change; I'm feeling offended and oppressed by a road sign. It's not the Lee part; it's the "Chapel" part. Think that's a stretch? It's not. Read about the Peace Cross built in Bladensburg Maryland in 1925 to honor war dead.

One of the sagest observations in Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Horwitz's "Confederates in the Attic" comes from a waitress in Columbia, South Carolina, at the height of the flag-over-the-capitol furor. "As soon as you make an issue of something, everyone feels they got to pick sides," she notes, "same as they done back in eighteen-whatever."

If you can honestly build up rage, over a name that's 150 years old; there is something wrong with you. We have real problems to solve in this society, current issues. Changing a road name isn't going to put a degree in your pocket, food on your table or create a career. Going back 150 years and blaming people for how they lived their lives, their choices and thinking it affects your life, that's insanity. If you want to waste your day sitting around thinking up new things to be offended by, that's on you. I'm sure you'll find plenty of things to stew about.

Are you really such a hater or do you just follow the crowd? Lee betrayed the union, well guess what....

The Declaration of Independence was clearly a secessionist document. Our forefathers were all traitors to the crown, and most all of them owned slaves. Do you honestly think there are message boards in London or Liverpool where they wail against the God awful Americans, and about how angry they personally are with George Washington and company (?), or would that strike you as stupid after 150+ years? I'm guessing STUPID!

The road is named after a failed church named for a failed leader.
