I recently started going to mass again. My church has a K-8 school attached to it.
Apparently, on Friday mornings, the entire student body walks over to attend mass. Yesterday, I watched probably 300 kids file into church and take their seats in the pews. Except for their footsteps, there was NOT A SOUND! No talking, horseplay, nothing. There was even a significant number of black and Hispanic kids in the group, who were behaving the same as the white kids. I was amazed.
I used to drive a school bus, so I'm very familiar with FCPS kids of the same age group. If these were 300 FCPS kids coming to church, they would have been screaming and yelling, climbing over the backs of the pews, slamming the kneelers, some would hitting other kids, and who knows what all else.
I wonder what the parochial schools know that FCPS doesn't?
Also, during mass there are a couple of readings of Bible passages that the priest or deacon usually reads, but at the student mass, the kids read them. And they read them perfectly. No stammering, tripping over words, perfect diction. They actually read better than some adults, and they're only 9 or 10 years old!
