I am a football fan and my politics are pretty much middle of the road. But I must say my personal experience matches this poll. Not any "native" Americans, but I have not actually spoken with anyone that finds the name offensive. That includes a lot of Democrats here at work. I really don't understand the furor. Or why it's such a cause celebre.

I may be stupid,and I may not have put it correctly but "504 people surveyed when there are more than 500 tribes? Your sample size of 504 out of 2million plus Native Americans makes your results difficult to justify. Try a better sample size, maybe then it will be worth looking at. "

Hmmm, this poll is pretty flawed if you ask me. The article claims that pollsters talked to 504 Native Americans throughout the fifty states. Basically, that adds up to 10 people per state. Wow! Ten people? Now, let us consider the fact that the last U.S. Census shows that 5.2 million U.S. Citizens claim Native American heritage. This means that only 1% of the total Native American population was polled. Can I get a wow again? Did Mr. Snyder, the Washing Redskins owner, pay for this pathetic poll? I would like to think that a prestigious news organization such as the Washington Post would actually have better sense to not glorify a poll with so little participants. "

There's nothing wrong with the sample size, buddy. No one without an agenda has attacked the WaPo's methodology here. The questions were targeted, unambiguous and the sample was a solid cross section of self-identified Native Americans.

So you quote other people like you who don't understand how statistical sampling works? lmao Including someone who can't even do the simple math to know that 504 isn't 1% of 5.2 million. Worse yet someone who doesn't understand that, even if it were 1%, that would be a rather high percentage as a sample which would yield a very high level of confidence in the result.

Seriously dude, you're ruining the rep of an entire race. Go look at the relative sample sizes for other similar surveys. Or there are some simple online calculators which will show you what size sample will give you a result at what level of confidence and confidence interval (aka margin of error) for a given population size. Plug 504 and 5.2 million into one of those and let us know how that comes out.
