Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Probably the training going on down at Quantico. Even though it's ~25 miles away, for some reason I often hear the sounds of explosions when they're training down there.
I used to live in Arlington near Glebe Rd & Old Dominion Drive close to Marymount and at times I could hear cannon fire at Arlington Cemetery/Ft Meyer, probably some sort of ceremonial activities.
So it is not unusual for sound to travel long distances depending on the temperature, humidity, wind direction.

Same here (near Clifton). Wasn't sure if it was Quantico, air traffic, or thunderstorms. If we can hear it here, I can only imagine how loud it must be at Quantico.
Sound travels at 1,126 ft/second, which means it takes five full seconds for the sound of the blast to travel the 25 miles from the barrel to your eardrum.
Also, if the wind is blowing just right, I can hear "Taps" and all the other military songs playing at Fort Myer from Glebe Road in Arlington
What you heard might have been the Mad Moment down at The Basic School in Quantico. Basically, the Mad Moment happens when a Marine defensive perimeter fires everything it has to repel an attacking force. Terrorists everywhere should spend a day in Quantico and witness the Mad Moment. Or they can witness the real thing in Somalia I guess.

I’m sure if I heard that, it would have scared my boots off.
Army infantry, we called it a "mad minute ", same logic though, time to heat up some barrels! M4s, 249s and 240 Bravo's going full tilt. Please enjoy approaching our FPF line!
