Was the Shakey's Pizza building on Richmond Highway built specifically for the Shakey's Pizza chain?

That building looks like nothing else on Richmond Highway so I was wondering if that was the case. Anybody know?

I am at work. Night audit is already done. Nobody has checked in or out for several hours. What do you want for me to do? Surf the web for porn sites?

Why? At this point I can transfer to anywhere I want in 22 states if I wanted to. I will stay here for now.

Most people here are young whipper snappers/punks and don't even remember Shakey's pizza. Those pizza parlors used to be great.

I remember Shakey's. I ate at the one on Route 1 -- ONCE. What I remember:

1.) Annoying banjo music

2.) Long wait for the pizza

3.) The pizza wasn't worth the wait.

YMMV, but that was my first and last trip to Shakey's.

Shakey's were franchises and the buildings were built to Shakey's specs. The one on Richmond Highway and the one at Tyson's had the same owner. The ones in Annandale, Fairfax and Rockville were owned by a different group, the Brantley family. I worked at the one in Annandale while in High School and it was one of the most fun jobs I ever had.

The Shakey's in Annandale was originally an Acme grocery store.

There is nice Shakey's Pizza Parlor in Hollywood. In the little Armenia neighborhood close to Zankou Chicken. It's an original building, so it's good for research purposes. Same great menu with some updates for the health conscious.

It was Captain Whites Seafood, I think they still own that building and their trucks still park there. Blacks steal food at all you can eat establishments.

Yes it was originally a Shakey's Pizza Parlor. It was built on the site of the old Brook's Lodge where ladies of the night would hang out on the 2nd floor and wave to the cars on route one. To the left of Brooks lodge was a massage parlor. Sadly the fun came to an end when it burnt down.

Annandale had two different Shakey's locations. The first one was smaller and close to Pep Boys. They moved up several stores to a former Consumers Co-Op Supermarket (not Acme) (Annandale Acme was where Curtis Brothers / HUB Furniture, currently Goodwill). Anyway the supermarket was split into two restaurants in the early 70's - The Olde Spaghetti Mill (later Horn & Horn Buffet) and Shakey's.

The Alexandria Shakey's on Richmond Highway was original and closed around 1990. In the picture the window on the far left was a direct view into the kitchen and you could watch them making pizza's. The door is in the original location but the canopy was added sometime in the mid 70's.

I liked Shakey's but the pizza did have a strong vinegar taste. The game room was fun but the player piano and dude playing a banjo was lame. In later years the player piano was replaced by a large aquarium and a buffet was added.

I won't argue most of that, but unless you are talking before the year 1960 (the year I moved to Annandale), the Acme grocery store was on Little River Turnpike.

Mmmmm, the only furniture store I remember in the old days was J L Michelbach's at 236 and Ravensworth, across from Kerlin's Corner.

This is way before John Marr Dr existed.
