Value City Furniture has a decent mix of medium cost furniture. Holds up pretty well too.

If you try hard enough, you may be able to find something in that price range (e.g., Bob's or Big Lots) - but you're not going to find 'quality furniture' at that price. Fifteen hundred for a sofa and loveseat is very low. Either up your budget, reduce your expectations re quality, or look for bargains on Craigslist (and there are some, but you have to be extremely careful).

I just bought $62,000 worth of furniture for 10 grand from the governors mansion.
I got the prosecutor on my ass.
I'm selling the whole thing for 20 grand.
It's top of the line stuff.
I'm a democrat so stealing is in my DNA.

Hell, I was dead broke when I left the White House, so I just stole everything I could!

I was new to furniture buying and thought Ashley's Furniture made good stuff. I now have a couch that is completely falling apart (couldn't even sell it on CL), I have another couch where the cushions literally have ass indentations from sitting on it once a week (I weight 150 lbs), and I have a dinner table that if you breath on it, the stain disappears on all of the edges (seriously...shit sucks). DO NOT buy from Ashley's. Lesson learned.

Next time, I'll spend a little bit more to have a couch that I can sit on without it imploding within two years.

Unfortunately, as you found, Ashley furniture - along with most mid range furniture - is not made to last. You can find some really attractive upholstered pieces in this price range (as long as you don't look too close), but they're not actually meant to be used beyond the occassional guest. In terms of dining furniture...if you like a traditional look you can incredible bargains on Craigslist; quality stuff for fifty percent or more off.
