Just moved to the area and am looking for some cheap and comfortable furniture. Anyone know of a place with some great deals.

Too late. I saw two evictions nearby in Lake Anne Reston where the furniture was put out on the curb.

I got a couple of nice pieces of furniture from one of those places like Cort that rents furniture then after so long they sell it at a showroom. While I wouldnt buy a couch or bed for bedbug cockroach reasons I did get a nice table that had a small scratch on it. You can also jew them down on the price. Got it home touched up the scratch and it looks fine.

The OP asked for Comfortable furniture, so Ikea is out as far as couches and chairs...

Try Jennifer in Tysons/Mclean. The prices aren't too bad, stuff is comfortable....may not last a lifetime, but I didn't see that listed as a requirement.

What about Bob's Furniture?
I have never been there, have just seen their ads.
They opened one where Office Depot used to be at Baileys.

My wife and I got an awesome deal on a 3-piece living room set (sofa, love seat, recliner) from Value City... but now we're paying for it. 18 months after we've bought it and the couch springs have all busted making it sink super deep when you sit in it. The recliner is super comfortable though.

Marlo is not cheap, but used to be quality.
Ikea, for quality stuff, is not cheap but does last a while and it does come with warranty, up to 15 years on some stuff.

Value City = crap

Good furniture and the word cheap do not go together. You pretty much get what you pay for. If you are really cheap, try the Salvation Army stores. There is one in Woodbridge also. You can get some decent tables, dressers, and chairs that way. As for anything upholstered (where you can't see the frame and springs), be careful.

Another possibility is Craig's list. We got an awesome desk that way for only $75.

I have IKEA and Value city furniture at my place. 4 years for most, hadn't had a single problem. I've had one IKEA chair for 8 years and people say it's the most comfortable they've ever sat in.

I can vouch for Bob's they are pretty decent (a bit better quality than Value city IMO).

But if you want REAL furniture at a CHEAP price and are willing to travel- hit up the furniture district in High Point, North Carolina.

I got some goregous real wood Thomasville pieces for 70% cheaper than if i bought it here in the DMV. Think about it- they have to pay the high ass rent for the land to have the store here- it is so much cheaper in High Point.

Be warned it is a 5 hour drive so be ready to spend a night!!!! What I do is head on down after work on a friday, check into a holiday inn or something, and be up at dawn saturday fully rested and ready to spend the day shopping. Then load up the truck (with rented uhaul trailer) and head home with new furniture in hand paid cash for the best deals.

I bought from here:

http://www.furniturelandsouth.com/outlet-center/furntureland-south-north-carolina-furniture-outlet.aspx

More shops here:

http://www.highpointfurniture.com/

Happy traveling! It's worth it-

Real Wood Thomasville or other name brand china cabinet in NOVA- $2500
Exact same cabinet in High Point, make, model, serial- $700 cash out the door. No JOKE!!!!

Craigs list. We moved and got a nice dining room set (including a big mirror) for 400 bucks, an over-stuffed Italian leather couch and love seat for 300 bucks delivered. 2 free carpets of good quality and a free ikea desk in good shape. Thats 2.5 rooms furnished for 700 dollars. Amazing.

(at the same move we sold over $1200 worth of stuff we didnt want anymore so we actually turned a profit in the move)

Dont by any volume of stuff from Ikea - it doesnt last. We all know its cheap crap but if you by real wood furniture at least it doesnt end up in the dumpster after 4 years...

Any tips on how to determine if the furniture is in good condition, before setting out to the buyers location?

1. Consignment shops in areas where rich people live and change thei decoration status often--ie., McLean, Leesburg, North Reston, etc.
2. Ikea stores
3. Go to all the community yardsales in rich areas every Saturday. Go really early for the best stuff before the dealers can get there first. Get the small local news circulars (often found in local libraries, Whole Foods and Trader Joes entrances). They publish extensive local yard sale locations with each weekly edition. Also Leesburg or Loudoun County newspaper if it is still being published is a great source.

You could try Salvation Army in Manassas, also try Craigslist. Some people will try and get rid of free furniture if you go pick it up.

I like Rolf-Benz.

Cheap, of course, is all relative. For Bill Gates and Carlos Slim, Rolf-Benz is really cheap.

Try the Restore in Chantilly. You can get some nice couches for about $25.
Otherwise I agree with IKEA. A little pricey but will last for years. Even with kids.

I feel like IKEA has gone downhill a bit-

Still nice-looking pieces of furniture as I dig the modern style- but it breaks easily if you have young kids on it frequently.

They have a good warranty and did fix my problem quickly and for free (if you call a month waiting for the shipping to/from quick)....but it would have been nice if that large sectional sofa I spent over $1,000 on didn't break within the first year of owning it (snapped at the joist right where the screw was)- and I was careful to make sure kids didn't jump on it only SIT on it.

The fabric was awesome, spills cleaned up quick and easy and it was comfy- but be warned if you put any real weight on it!! ;)

I'd pick BOBS next time as they are a bit more local- and have more of the modern style I like!
