Best way to get out of NoVA from Burke to upstate New York
Posted by: Josh the Traveler ()

My wife, my 9 month old and I are going on our first road trip together to visit friends in upstate New York, Rochester specifically. We live in Burke and hope to leave as early as possible, no later than 6:30AM hopefully.

I never take 495 at that time of day; how is it? I am best served to take Braddock to 495, to 270, then take 15 up north? I hope traffic going on the innerloop that way isn't horrid. I'll gladly take any other route suggestions. Thanks,
-Josh

At 6:30, it's a little slow, but not unbearable. Traffic should be lighter tomorrow since it's Friday and "summer". I noticed a shitload more cars on the road this afternoon than normal, which generally indicates people getting the fuck out of dodge for a 3 day weekend.

You should be fine once you pass Rt. 7 and 123...Especially at that time of the morning. May be some traffic, but, it shouldn't be stop and go under normal conditions.

15 is slow from Leesburg to MD. But you then make up time by taking I-70 North to I-81 East and then go to Harrisburg, PA and pick up Rt 15N. Between 15N and I-99 you head due North to Rochester.

Take 15N all the way to Corning NY and then you will see a sign for Rochester. I go to Elmira all the time

I'd take 123 to 66 West, then 81 North, then 15 North when you hit PA. No reason to jet around the Beltway when you're not heading to points Northeast of the area.

WTF. You might as well send him down 95 South to catch a flight from Miami to NYC.

If you actually get on the road by 6:30 am, it will be slow in some spots. But check websites for traffic flow, or listen to WTOP FM (103.5) on the 8's for their traffic report. It's a major route so they'll cover it.

Here's one site with live traffic cams --

Kill yourself. Then let somebody else drive your body to New York. Probably be the easiest drive you'll ever take.....

On a serious note, I'd probably do what everybody else said- get up early and go.

True. 15 isn't bad once you hit 270. Agree with whoever said to check WTOP or 511va.org before leaving, to make sure there's no tractor trailer overturned or something.
