It's tragic, in a school system this big there is not a ton that can be done to prevent these.

The one thing that does come to mind though, is reminding the kids that school counselors actually are there to not just work on schedules and letters of recommendations, but also there to counsel and talk to kids as they go through difficult times. School counselors then have the ability to refer out and/or talk with many stakeholders in the child's life. I don't know what goes through a child's mind when contemplating this, but I am sure often they feel like they have no one to talk to. Make it known that school counselors can help and perhaps some of these are avoided.

Parents need to take responsibility too though. If they suspect something is up, they need to seek outside help and play a bigger role in their child's life. Not saying this is the case in many instances, but still a consideration for some at-risk youth.

Don't let your kids read threads at FFXU. That'll go a long way towards reducing likelihood of suicide.

This is very sad but I find it hard to blame is on fcps. They have made every effort to prevent this sort of thing. At woodson, at least, there are new programs designed to let struggling students talk to their counselors or teachers about what troubles them.

I blame the pressure that the schools in this county put on children. It is just too much! The schools in Fairfax are not even that good anymore!

Most of the counselors are awful...and pretty much don't even know it, or possibly don't care.

The suicide rate in FCPS is so high do to several factors. The biggest being the pressure to be the "BEST." Fairfax being in the top 5 richest counties in the world, the pressure to be great is passed on down to the students along with the other stresses and things teens deal with being teens it is just a fatal mix.

These kids need to just turn to drugs instead of killing themselves.

I'm sure their parents would rather have a drug addicted kid than a dead body.

Psychologists. Therapists. Involved parenting. Religion. Support groups. Etc, etc.

I think that is pretty far from the truth. Fairfax County has a lot of qualified school counselors. That being said, school counselors are not mental health experts and of course there are counselors and therapists outside of school that work with mental health on a daily basis and would be a better fit. What makes a good versus bad counselor in your opinion though? I haven't seen many bad ones, they are just improperly utilized for solely academics in a lot of cases.

No hope. Someone would have to feel as if they had no hope. But there is hope for everyone. Even someone fully despised or disgraced, there is hope. There is hope for everyone. Never ever give up.

I was actually referring mostly to their abilities in "guiding" and/or "counseling" in academics. They have very little to offer that parents don't already know or could learn after about 30 minutes of research.

Heaven help anyone (maybe a bad choice of words in this thread) who needs to lean on them for issues such as depression or suicidal tendencies.

My children have had some wonderful counselors when they were students in FCPS. My youngest daughter dealt with some serious anxiety and depression, which caused her to miss a great deal of school. Her counselor really helped us navigate that time, provided good resources, and helped us work with her teachers to get her through Junior and Senior year.

There are tons of counselors in FCPS who are qualified therapists and would love to spend their time helping students with concerns and issues. Unfortunately, like teachers in FCPS, they aren't able to do what they are "hired" to do, because most of their time is spent in committees, being testing coordinators, running PBIS curriculums, etc.

I guarantee any counselor who you ask, will tell you that they wish they could spend all of their time at school directly helping students.

stop blaming it on the school system and take responsibility for your own actions as a parent. i mean some of the blame can be put on the school system but lets be real...a strong family and bond with your kids is the best way to help with this type of thing. i strongly believe that because a lot of families in this area have dual careers and obligations to make ends meet only ends up with the children getting the short end of deal in the emotional department of there lives.

Still not clear it was suicide. If it actually was, there will be no information released through official channels. Journalistic policy and police policy is not to discuss suicides out of sensitivity to the family and to reduce copycats.

A shame that FCPS still has no idea how to address the growing suicides problem in their schools. As they will not release the causes of each individual tragedy, the public is also left wondering what could be done.

Maybe somewhere out there in FFU world there is someone who would aggregate all the names, ages, schools, method of death, etc. of these children and start gathering real data on what led to their taking of their own lives.

Then we could have a real conversation on prevention.

The responsibility does not fall entirely fall on the schools - they are funded to educate, yet everyone expects the schools to raise their children for them. Why not put the same pressure on parents? Why shouldn't it be a parent-sponsored volunteer organization that shoulders the responsibility?

Teenagers operate in the here and now. They don't have the luxury of time or the mental ability to look back and recognize that most of their concerns are trivial, fixable, temporary, or misguided. Plus parents and the schools put way too much pressure on these kids, especially in this area. If you have a child with physical or mental health problems you realize pretty quickly how unimportant peripheral issues are.

It won't stop people, but it's a time for sympathy and empathy for the family, not projecting your own personal beefs about society at large. Whether you intend to or not, a post like your implies things about the FHS student that most likely were not true at all.

The thing is, even a girl as beautiful as She was, isn't going to be marrying up unless She gets into a good college. Enough guys would mislead her to think that way and they'd use her and then blame her for being uneducated and "vain".
I would love a tally of women in Northern Virginia who have no college education and have married up. I'd then love a tally of all the girls who tried to marry up and failed. The ratio would be 20 married, thousands whored out, used and dumped.
Its how the upper classes are truly tearing down everybody else. Women cannot see guys in their own league as lovable or worthy. They are not getting together and growing strong together. Instead, the women wish to sleep with the enemy. If someone has a higher education or makes more money, they AIN'T you're friend! Time they use women in their own league as their whores.
As if many welfare babies weren't fathered by lawyer fuck buddies- pleeze!

we spent the teachers day on Monday in training to deal with "at risk" students struggling with several issues and was upsetting to hear of another suicide this week.
Most teachers and counselors are doing their best to identify and help these kids. I think the students friends and family really need to guide them to help as soon as they sense an issue. The toll that this is taking on the other students is heavy. It has been hard to know what to say to help them through it. Know your kids parents.

Agree. Not only counselors but some chool staff are terrible. After a student leaving school early in deep shock and grievance the day the death news broke, the attendance office demanded a written excuse from parents. The next day gave the student a lecture on how you can't leave school without properly checking out and that the late excuse may be "unacceptable" due to school "policy". They didnt even ask how the student was feeling and coping...completely insensitive and cold...That is how the school system operates....

I'll admit that our problems can seem very trivial and overblown when you hear them but you guys are so removed from high school you forget you worried about the same stuff.
Getting good grades and studying
Having friends
Making a sports team
Getting good sleep.
If you can't get 2 or 3(I'm struggling with 3) it can surprisingly make high school really tough. Who will think I'm cool when I can't make the basketball team and have no other sport to play? And we really do have a lot of homework. But I still wing it lol

Here's another angle.

High school social dynamics really aren't that important in real life. Don't get worked up about what you perceive or hear people say about you. High school is 90% insecure kids and 10% kids with actual direction, goals and empathy. It's not a cross-section of society given the high proportion of undeveloped minds.

I know first hand that the Fairfax-falls church community service board played a devilish role in most of the suicide victims lives.

Creigh Deeds son had a history with the CSB and look at that train wreck.

To all Fairfax County student's parents I strongly advise you to pay the enormous fees for private help if your kid needs or is forced to get help.

Fairfax County has a policy of tormenting anyone who gets out of line for even the smallest infractions. Once they get control of your child they won't let go for a long time and unfortunately many kids just give up before their freedom is restored.

My only problem with fcps is that they chose to ignore suicide. I get it's dark subject but that's not something that should ignored. I'm not asking for a huge post on the fcps website, but the least you could do is put something on that schools site. They don't even say anything on the announcements. And when ryan mcelveen did recognize the girl by name he had to delete it. All we get is a disclaimer about sucide help.

I'm surprised at all the empathy from you guys on fairfax underground about this. I expected a ton of jokes. I'm assuming the majority of you are women, not that it matters.

It's not their place. Permission from the parents must be given before any information about their daughter can be shared. You do understand that, don't you? I mean, it's not about you

From Edwin S. Shneidman, The Suicidal Mind.

Until Dr. Shneidman took up the study of suicide shortly after World War II, the subject had received little sustained attention from researchers or clinicians. But as a researcher, theoretician, lecturer and author, he helped establish the study of suicide as an interdisciplinary field and devised many concepts now widely accepted.

Parents need to emphasize that it's ok to slack off in school because the world needs more baristas.

i'm hot on your trail i know your a fucking facist trying to get a big gov paycheck for doing fraudulent psych work - mrs "i diagnosed you crazy" foreigner bitch

so you'd hear of at most a couple suicides a year for the whole county when it was much smaller: maybe today a reasonable figure would be several for the whole county. if there wasn't zero tolerance facists treating kids like domination puppets

---------------------------
fact is going through puberty there is "chemical instability" and kids (HAD BEEN) tought about it, how it's natural, and etc

____________________________

TODAY something dangerous is happening. fucking foriegners are in the usa prescribing dangerous drugs (ie, that CAUSE suicide and say so on the label) to any kid - sometimes for political reasons - or sometimes just because they know they can use puberty as an excuse to give a sexy illegal a large paycheck for fuck

____________________________

TODAY those fucking facists at Google are STRONLY advertizing gov pshy's for teens and massive prescripttions EVEN IN THE FUCKING MEDICAL INFO SEcTION OF ENCYLOPEDIAS

these people, if they are really removing civil evidence puberty is normal, kids can rely on each other and groups and show be taught it's temporary and all that (no drugs, no pshychologists). these people making puberty out to be a mental illness by removing evidences and past articles so to sell drugs: SHOULD BE SHOT. and i mean that if it's true.

==============================
and the drugs? more kids are doign suicide not less: which is what the black box label says, which is there after the drug companies were FORCED to display the black box warnings after being sued for knowingly causing suicides. at the time: they immediately began prescribing it for pets, just incase they lost the human market

sacks of shit is what they are
