Yesterday's Rose

I just visited a thrift store the other day called Yesterday's Rose, off of Main Street. Nice little place there. Prices were good too. Anyone ever been there?

Yup, i've been to yesterday's rose. I find it kind of a hit or miss type thrift store (though your opinion might depend on what you usually look for).

It's a good place to go if you like picking up random books you've been meaning to read, over replace dishes you might have broken or misplaced over the years.

I like to thrift a lot of t-shirts or cardigans, but i never really find many at Rose. I tend to find more clothes i like at salvation army on little river turnpike, if you don't mind the employees trying to chat you up or stand in the way in the middle of aisles.

Usually when I walk into a thrift store, I have a personal list of things I always look out for. One being random t-shirts/cardigans, another being records or LPs (it's pretty much a dead trend, i know), and finally books.

I love finding the weirdest most fucked up things in thrift stores that make you wonder who the hell thought it was a good idea to mass produce them. I like to think of it as a treasure hunt.

So in conclusion, i love thrifting and Yesterday's Rose is a fairly decent thrift store...maybe not the best, but still fun to check out every now and then.

Oh, and the one certain thing i've been trying to find forFREAKINGever is a rotary phone. I've been looking in every thrift store in the area in search of a rotary phone, and i swear to god they don't exist around here. I don't want to pay antique store prices either ($50 for a rotary?!?? No thanks). I should try to hit up some garage sales this spring in hopes that an old lady will sell off a bunch of her old stuff.

We'll see...maybe I'll score one eventually.

So Ted, what about you? What do you like to thrift?

I Googled "rotary phone for sale" and found plenty of them on e-bay.
They ranged in price from $9.95 and up. Buyer beware of their
working condition. Parts or repairs are very difficult to come by.
Most of the phone techs who were trained on them are long since
retired.

Yesterday's Rose is kind of a rip off. There are some decent prices, but many things seem like they were priced by clueless people. I've seen stuff priced higher than the new stuff at like Target.

Second Chance Thrift Store in Old Town Fairfax (123 across from Massey Bldg.) is nice. It's small and kind of cute and there are some good deals, though prices can also be uneven. But all the profits go to help the animals that the Humane Society takes care of. So I always give an extra donation anyway.

The problem with YR is that the managers are often rude and unpleasant to be around. They also don't seem to treat their employees very well, sadly. I've gone looking for children's clothes and they all look like they are circa 1980. I think the people in the back take the good stuff and leave the scraps for their customers. I would hardly call YR Fairfax's friendly thriftstore as they advertise. They don't treat their customers well and can be down right rude. When you go to donate anything they make it seem like an inconvenience for them rather than show appreciation. Yeah, like any second hand store there are treasures to be found, but it's not particularly a pleasant experience treasure hunting there. I prefer Salvation Army personally.

So what did you find, OP?

I've found some of the workers there to be rude, also. And, sometimes it seems as if they think something is valuable just because it is old, so they price it high. Sometimes old and busted is just old and busted. I go to Unique for thrift store finds. It's cleaner and has a better selection.

Ive shopped at YR many times just browsing. The people who work there are usually doing community service and teenage offenders. That could be why there are some surly employees. The records, tapes and cassettes are always in bad shape and not worth looking at. There is a LOT of furniture to check out tho.

I've NEVER seen nice furniture in that place. It's all outdated and dusty.

I have found some furniture, but by far my favorite find would be the "I <3 Porn" T-shirt I found once.

Rotary phones will not work on the current touch tone service.

Jesus, sorry. Thrifting happens to be one of my hobbies (i enjoy finding fun and random things) and I had always hoped I could find myself a rotary phone.

Even if it couldn't work, I'd still be happy with having one.

There's all sorts of items out there that wouldn't "work" simply because technology has advanced too far for those items to continue to be used in the same way as during their original production years...i UNDERSTAND that.

I guess you think the idea of an antique store is ridiculous too, right?

You missed my perfectly good $550 Lay-Z-Boy chair that was 2 years old but I hated it. It was just too big for my house. Pet-free, kid-free home. Perfect chair. I thought the guy working there was going to drop dead when I dropped it off.
