You can thank a series of shitty Republican Board of Supervisors and the following data shows what decreasing the personal property tax rates have a corresponding effect on a whole lot of things going south in our County.
The chart below goes back to 1968, but shows “effective” tax rates. up until 1977, the actual rate was higher – but real estate was only valued at 40% of it’s total assessment. I have adjusted those earlier years to make an “apples to apples” comparison. The number represents the tax per $100 of assessed value – as in $1.09 for every $100 of assessed value.
