Arlington driver removed from duty for plowing in wrong direction

WASHINGTON - Arlington County says it has removed a snow plow driver from duty after a motorist reported seeing the driver travel the wrong direction on Military Road Monday morning.

The motorist took video, shared with WTOP, showing the plow traveling the wrong direction on a two-lane road as a car approaches from the opposite direction

The driver who took the video says he had turned around and followed the plow after it nearly struck his own car.

The head of Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services says the plow driver's behavior was "completely unacceptable" and violates the county's training practices.

"As soon as the county learned of the unacceptable behavior, we identified the driver and removed him from duty. We will be taking appropriate action with this employee. Safety is a priority for the county, and we encourage any driver issues or concerns to be reported to the police," Dave Hundelt says in a statement to WTOP.

Heavy snowfall left roads covered early Monday morning. Area schools and federal offices were closed leaving traffic light on area roads.

Crews spent the morning clear snow and slush from the roads as the snow tapered off.

Jason Berry, who shot the video, says he was travelling home about 7:30 a.m. Monday when he came over the top of a hill and had to veer out of his lane to avoid colliding with the plow truck. He temporarily lost control of his Volkswagon, Berry tells WTOP.

Berry says he turned around and began following the plow and saw the plow force another car out of its lane.

"He could have easily killed somebody. There's no excuse for that," Berry says.

“I came over a hill and headed right towards me was this snow plow in my lane,” Berry told ARLnow.com via email. “The driver did not move or slow down, I was forced out of my lane into the deeper snow in between lanes. I temporarily lost control of my car and managed to use the e-brake to slide to a stop.”


He used the emergency hand break to stop, no wonder he spun out. He's some fast and the furious wanna be. And how does he know the driver was fired? Someone he knows is giving out sensitive employment information?

Also, just my opinion, but he is absolutely a busybody prick for sending the youtube video to "all the media outlets" and giving interviews describing himself as a film director/entrepreneur. If you're concerned about the safety of someone's actions, call the police..let them handle it. Promoting this for his own gain tells me this wasn't about SAFETY, it was about attention.

I'm not saying the plow driver wasn't doing anything wrong, but let his supervisors and law enforcement handle it.

I don't see how someone who was convicted of beating a woman just last year can go about preaching about saving lives...

Since this idiot admits that he was driving and is using his cell phone to record a video I'd like to know if the Arlington or VA State police will be issuing a ticket. Last time I checked driving while recording a video is distracted driving and should be more than enough to pick up one ticket. Plus if you look at the video you will see while he's worried about the plow his dumbass is also on the wrong side of the double yellow line. I hope one of the other plow men will drop off a dump size truck amount of snow at his front door. Good luck digging out.

All joking aside, what really pisses me off is this guy goes off on a day-long personal crusade against a hardworking blue collar guy who slipped up.

I'm not saying the truck driver was in the right; but following him, driving on the wrong side of the road and then pacing him with one hand on the wheel and one hand filming wasn't much better.

The video was not gripping at all. Even if the auteur has gripped (and perhaps even filmed) many things ... some of which might spit if sufficiently stroked ... this is, no doubt, the quality of the film-making marketed at http://www.grippedfilms.com.

I do not believe that the snow-plow driver was being "unsafe" ... given the driver's (probable) mission: to clear the lanes of travel of a major thoroughfare ... with little traffic.

To get close enough to the edges of the travel lanes, the plow-driver could have either plowed in the direction of the normal traffic flow (while crossing his fingers and) hoping that the gap between the right side of his plow-blade remained sufficiently large to not damage parked cars and the like.

Or the driver could've operated his plow against the flow of traffic. Plowing tightly to the verge -- which is possible only because he was able to observe the left side of the blade ... impossible with respect to the right side of the blade -- is intended to allow all of the travel lanes to be used subsequent to being plowed. And that is safe.

The video, and forced outrage, are typical of the Arlington crowd that ooh and aah over bicycling and such. These same people bleat about how poorly the county clears the road when they don't have their normal traffic lane fully available after the plow comes through.

- "a professional stunt driver" (translation, paid himself to drive in one of his own films),

- a "film maker" (translation, has an expensive video camera with which he makes documentary films to sell to the participants), sort of like a self-published book writer is an author, and

... Aaah-say ... Why wasn't JASON ERIC BERRY, of ARLINGTON, VA 22203 driving a car at all? After all, Jason Berry appears to be someone "who can ride his bike even on snow and ice one handed".

Also what difference does it make whether its a camera or a phone? He's still holding an object, distracted by it, speeding after a plow in the snow, crossing the double yellow line while doing so, and lying about some one handed e-brake stunt maneuver.
