Redskins' TE Davis charged with DUI

WASHINGTON - Redskins tight end Fred Davis reportedly was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on Thursday, a day after he was suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL's drug policy.

According to a tweet by the Washington Post's Mike Jones, Davis was pulled over in Fairfax County at about 3:45 p.m. NBC Washington has confirmed the arrest with the county police, reporting Davis, 28, was stopped at Gallows Road and Leesburg Pike just before 4 p.m. Thursday and taken into custody.

Police have not confirmed whether Davis has been released.

Davis says his latest NFL suspension resulted from taking a supplement that contained a banned substance.

Davis was suspended indefinitely without pay Wednesday for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

It's the second substance-abuse suspension for Davis. He was also sanctioned for the final four games of the 2011 season after testing positive for marijuana.

He said this suspension is unrelated to the first one. He also said he will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall.

Davis is set to become a free agent next month. Davis played in 10 games for the Redskins last season, catching seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown and was passed on the depth chart by rookie Jordan Reed.

Redskins TE Fred Davis arrested for DUI on day after NFL suspends him indefinitely

Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis was arrested Thursday afternoon in Fairfax County and charged with driving under the influence, a Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson confirmed.

The arrest comes just a day after Davis was suspended indefinitely Wednesday by the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Yesterday, at 3:45 p.m., Fairfax County police arrested Davis at the corners of Gallows Road and Leesburg Pike.

No further details of the incident were available as of late Thursday night.

Davis, who signed a one-year contract with the Redskins before last season, was set to become a free agent next month.

The Redskins didn’t have interest in re-signing him even before the suspension.

Davis entered the 2013 season as the starting tight end but fell out of favor with coaches, and was replaced by Logan Paulsen and Jordan Reed.

In 2011, Davis failed multiple tests for marijuana use and was suspended for the final four games of that season.

He claimed afterward that he had learned his lesson and vowed to mature.

He released a statement on Wednesday that his suspension stemmed from him taking a substance that wasn’t FDA approved.

There was speculation that he might be traded before the NFL’s trading deadline, but the Redskins never found a deal for him. At one point, Davis defended his work habits after being asked by reporters about speculation that he’d fallen out of favor with the coaching staff because of how he practiced and issues such as falling asleep during team meetings.

Davis told a group of reporters in October that he’d “never slept through a whole meeting but I’ve nodded off.”

Makes sense. What else would you do after throwing away your career and millions? Have a few drinks of course!

Another good player flushes a promising career down the drain over substance abuse and behavioral issues. I thought NFL teams all had mentors for these young guys. I hope Davis can find the right person to help him get back on track with his life, not just football. Not everyone can be a London Fletcher and overcome all personal and professional obstacles. Guys like that are few and far between. Maybe Fletcher can reach out to Davis if he hasn't already.

It's now clear that Davis has a serious substance abuse problem. He's not just a dope smoker who happened to get caught. Hopefully he gets his act together before he does himself or others serious harm.

When he missed practice his rookie year because he overslept was a huge clue missed by the Deadskins.

Curiosity is killing me. I would love to know where he had been drinking and was he stopped because of his driving behavior, or did someone tip off the police that he was intoxicated when he left wherever he was drinking. Late lunch and too many cocktails at the Palm?

All laws are racist because they are used disproportionately against Blacks. Obama and Holder, if they haven't already, should exempt Blacks from the white man's laws.

Only time someone passes out in their car at 4 in the afternoon is when they have been hitting the bottle to come down from an all night coke binge. How long after he got released from lock up before he bumped up again?

One of my roommates in college had a brother who was a lights-out college pitcher, got drafted by a major league team, spent a couple years in the minors, and completely flamed out. I asked him about it once, and he said "John likes to party more than he likes to play ball."

Some guys apparently are born to squander talent.

Fred Davis Arrested for DWI in Tysons Corner

Fred Davis Arrested for DWI in Tysons Corner
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/02/21/fred-davis-arrested-for-dwi-near-tysons-corner/

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Fairfax County Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Davis was taken into custody by Fairfax County officers at 3:45 p.m. at the corner of Gallows Road and Leesburg Pike, a short distance from the popular Tysons Corner shopping mall.

Officers responded to the location after a passerby called 911 to report that a man was slumped over inside a black Rolls-Royce on Gallows Road just prior to the intersection. When officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene it appeared the man was attempting to drive away, according to a Fairfax County Fire Department spokesperson.
Nobody was injured during the incident.

A court date will likely be known sometime Friday.

Davis’ arrest comes less than 24 hours after the NFL suspended him indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The USC-product, along with Trent Williams, was suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season after testing positive for marijuana on multiple occasions.

“For over two years, I’ve worked hard to eliminate marijuana from my life,” Davis said in comments distributed by the NFLPA following the latest suspension.
The tight end says he has not had a positive test for the drug since 2011 and the current suspension is the result of unknowingly ingesting a banned substance in a supplement.

Davis, an impending free agent, is not expected to return to the Redskins next season. He appeared in just 10 games (3 starts) last season after he was surpassed rookie Jordan Reed and recorded just 7 catches for 70 yards.
Davis said he plans to apply for reinstatement to the league in the fall.
Photos posted on Twitter and Deadspin allegedly show Davis being taken into custody.

I'm sure that 4 police cruisers were necessary for that. What a waste of resources.
