LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Fairfax County Thursday afternoon, according to police.
Davis was taken into custody by Fairfax County officers at 3:45 p.m. at the corner of Gallows Road and Leesburg Pike, a short distance from the popular Tysons Corner shopping mall.
Officers responded to the location after a passerby called 911 to report that a man was slumped over inside a black Rolls-Royce on Gallows Road just prior to the intersection. When officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene it appeared the man was attempting to drive away, according to a Fairfax County Fire Department spokesperson.
Nobody was injured during the incident.
A court date will likely be known sometime Friday.
Davis’ arrest comes less than 24 hours after the NFL suspended him indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The USC-product, along with Trent Williams, was suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season after testing positive for marijuana on multiple occasions.
“For over two years, I’ve worked hard to eliminate marijuana from my life,” Davis said in comments distributed by the NFLPA following the latest suspension.
The tight end says he has not had a positive test for the drug since 2011 and the current suspension is the result of unknowingly ingesting a banned substance in a supplement.
Davis, an impending free agent, is not expected to return to the Redskins next season. He appeared in just 10 games (3 starts) last season after he was surpassed rookie Jordan Reed and recorded just 7 catches for 70 yards.
Davis said he plans to apply for reinstatement to the league in the fall.
Photos posted on Twitter and Deadspin allegedly show Davis being taken into custody.
