Spike in cellphone thefts on Metro lines

Metro passengers may want to limit cellphone use after new data show an increasing number of crooks lurking on trains.

WASHINGTON -- Metro passengers may want to limit their cellphone use after new data shows an increasing number of crooks lurking the trains waiting to steal phones.

According to recently released statistics, there was a spike in 2013, and the trend was evident across the system.

"[Thieves] time it perfectly and wait for the doors to open or close," says Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik.

In 2012 there were approximately 350 incidents of cellphones being stolen across the Metro system. Last year, that number was around 550, a spike of nearly 60 percent.

"It's challenging," Pavlik says. "But it's something we're going to tackle."

As smartphone technology has gotten more advanced, the devices have become more appealing targets.

"The average person who steals it has no intention of activating it as a cellphone again. It still is a very valuable piece of equipment," explains Pavlik.

Police are redirecting resources and working to address the growing problem. Meanwhile, passengers are being urged to take some small steps, including keeping phones out of sight while on trains or at least limiting use.

Nearly all victims have been younger than 25 years old and most are female, but the crime can happen to anyone as long as thieves feels they have an opportunity.

"Be aware of what's going on around you," Pavlik says.

Below is a breakdown of the thefts that occurred in calendar year 2012 and calendar year 2013.

A spike? This is just more alarmist hype and slop by the media. Out of 225,000,000 Metro rides last year, there were 550 thefts of cell phones -- almost all from persons under the age of 25 -- and people are supposed to be worried enough to change their habits over this??? The odds are one in four hundred thousand. How desperate to sensationalize everything under the sun are the freaking media these days anyway? Gimme a break!

Well, at least we know where the stupid ignorant right-wing asswipe fucktards and racists who claim that it does can be found -- right here on FFXU -- the home of stupid ignorant right-wing asswipe fucktards and racists.

There were 640 cases of theft in 2013, that's up from 490 cases in 2012. I'd call that a "spike" in theft.

Obama says it's fine to take anything that someone else has if you want it. It's called "wealth redistribution".

Get some sort of clue, dude. The worthless media trash (at WTOP, this time) were hyping CELL PHONE thefts and some imagined need for Metro riders to take actual action as the result. This is a complete farce. Meanwhile, you can't manage to pull the proper data and don't understand that marginal differences in rates that are on the order of one chance in 400,000 to begin with are not spikes. They are a part of normal variation over time. The effective rate of theft of anything at all in Metro is still almost exactly zero. And note that the also uncommon theft of tablets, iPods and handbags all went down in 2013. Was that mentioned in the article? In fact, thefts of cell phones declined as well, didn't they -- it was only iPhones that increased. Both the source and the consumer here are failing at their jobs miserably.

Go stick your head in an oven, moron. Republicans have been redistributing wealth from the middle class to the rich for more than three decades. And causing one economic catastrophe after another along with it. Nothing is worse for the economy than a Republican President.

I suggest you study up the meanings and implications of "non sequitur". Going around making such a dumbfuck of yourself in public is not healthy.

You're right, we should just pretend there's no crime right? Typical Obama-Liberal supporter.

a 76% increase in thefts, is indeed a "spike" in crime. Sounds like you were dropped too many times as a child.

How did you ever pass the SOLs, you fucking moron? Over the course of 220+ million rides, overall thefts increased from 490 to 640. That's a little less than 31%. (And by the way, it leaves theft victims at fewer than one-third of a person for every 100,000 riders. That's a fucking TRIVIAL NUMBER in any case, you mindless asshat.) Theft of PED's meanwhile increased from 424 to 603. That's an increase of just over 42%. Thefts of iPhones (the worst number in the group) went from 254 to 428. That's an increase of 68.5%. You have no math skills whatsoever. Hardly the only place where you are sadly lacking of course. Basically, the words "fucking dumbshit" would apply to you across the board.

Hey, asshole! What you claimed was "a 76% increase in thefts". So now you're a braindead worthless fucktard with amnesia. Wanna try again? Wanna show your work this time, you worthless fucking know-nothing jerkwad?

Stupid dickhead. Your annual chances of dying in a bicycle accident are greater than the annual chances of being the victim of a covered theft on Metro. You right-wing asshats simply can't process a damned thing. You need one of those nannies you keep complaining about. Somebody to change the stupid-diaper when you open your fool mouths and proceed to soil yourselves.

Nice data table but I think they're missing some relevant demographic data. Or maybe just suppressing it since it would confirm what already know.

Easiest thing in the world for niggers to steal. Clueless yuppies never put them away and usually are oblivious to everything going on outside of that little 3x4 screen they stare into day and night.

Do the people who live in the Million+ homes around the metro even ride it?

Likely they ride their S class to a $500/month parking garage.
