Where the fuck do I live?

Ok, start at the intersection of Beulah Street and Telegraph Road. Proceed south to the Fairfax County Parkway. Take a right, and go towards the freeway, but turn right at Loisdale Road.

Follow Loisdale Road up to Spring Mall Drive, just south of the Springfield Mall. Take a right on Spring Mall, and go until you get to Frontier Drive, then take a right again. Take a left at the Franconia Springfield Parkway, and proceed to Beulah Street.

Take a right on Beulah, and follow it to Telegraph Road, the starting point.

Take the map area I just defined, and look at the metro tracks running through it that split it.

I live in the eastern half of the area I just defined. It's not Lorton, It's not Springfield, it's not Newington, It's not Kingstowne, it's not Franconia. The address, according to the post office, is Alexandria... but it's not Alexandria city. WTF is it????? Where the fuck do I live?

I hate the south. I hate the post office.

Sounds to me like you live in Alexandria.

The post office knows all. Listen to their wisdom.

You apparently live in an unincorporated portion of Fairfax County that has an Alexandria mailing address. With the exception of folks who actually live within the borders of one of the 3 incorporated towns in Fairfax County (Herndon, Vienna or Clifton), everyone living in the county lives in an unincorporated area.

I also live in an area that the post office and the fairfax county land records have me in different towns. I use the post office address for simplicity. But, when you go to sell your house, I suppose you can list under either.

The post office will be happy to investigate your inquiry. It will however need more revenue so the cost of a first class stamp is now ten dollars.

You just now have figured this out?

About 2/3 of the "Falls Church" mailing address is in Fairfax County and not the city of falls church. Same with "Alexandria" About 1/2 of the area that carries an Alexandria mailing address is NOT in the city of Alexandria but in Fairfax County.

Fairfax City is the 4th.

OP doesn't understand the concept of mailing addresses.

Actually, Fairfax City is not the 4th town. Fairfax City is an independent city, and according to Virginia law, is legally and politically not part of Fairfax County. People who live within the city limits of Fairfax City do not vote for members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, but rather for the Mayor & CIty Council of Fairfax City. They also pay local taxes (real estate, personal property, etc.) to Fairfax City, and not Fairfax County. Folks who live in towns like Herndon are still also considered residents of the county, and vote for county supervisors as well as their local town council and mayor. They also pay county taxes, and may also have a town tax on top of that.

I am actually one of those folks like the OP, who lives 3 miles or so outside the town limits of Herndon, but has a Herndon mailing address.

OP: You live in the "Alexandria secion of Fairfax County." Google the phrase and you will see that it has been used for for many years. But cheer up, it probably adds a few points to your house value.

That Alexandria mailing address is massive. I grew up in one of those areas(Mt. Vernon). When asked where I grew up, I typically respond with "Alexandria" because of this. My wife, who grew up in Old Town, is always quick to correct me in those situations, by adding "Fairfax County, Alexandria."

Not good enough, trollers.

Someone who lives on the west side of the area I described can say "I live in Newington".

Someone who lives south of this area can say "I live in Lorton" or "I live in Mason Neck"

Someone who lives across Beulah Street from this area can say "I live in Kingstowne"

Someone who lives just north of this area can say "I live in Manchester Lakes"

Someone who lives north of Franconia Road from this area can say "I live in Franconia"

My area doesn't HAVE a name, and "The Alexandria section of Fairfax County" isn't good enough. That covers from the Alexandria city border on Rt. 1 all the way to Ft. Belvoir, and as far west as Springfield. It includes Franconia, Rose Hill, Hybla Valley, Mount Vernon, Manchester Lakes, even Kingstowne.

So WTF??? Why does my area not merit its own name and all other areas do?

It sounds like it already has names and you just don't like it. Postal boundaries do not match up with political boundaries which in turn don't match up with the "regional" names that we quite often use. And don't think you are that unique. Similar situations exist elsewhere in the County.

What's in a name?

That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

When I moved to Falls Church city, the ever-helpful DMV assumed from my address that I lived in Fairfax County. So the county sent me a property tax bill for my car even though I had already paid the tax to Falls Church. I had to call the county and explain to them that I didn't actually live in their jurisdiction.

Fast forward a year, and the county sends me another property tax bill. Idiots.

Finally they got it together and stopped sending me bills, so what did I do? I moved to Fairfax County. Maybe I'm an idiot too.

Soounds like either Rose Hill or Burgundy Village, in either case move, lots of scumbags live around there. Start with the sex offender website, then drive around about nine at night and look for all the landscaping trucks and taxi-cabs parked around there. You'll see what I mean.

Correct. Which is why Fairfax City has its own Police. Imagine if Herndon, Vienna, Clifton had their own police force. oh god!!!

Herndon, Vienna, and Falls Church all have their own PD's.

Herndon has maintained a police force for at least 15 years. Probably 20. They are notorious for handing out speeding tickets as if their town budget depends on it. Oh wait, it probably does.

The Herndon Police Department was the 7th police department in Virginia to be accredited, in 1986. But I am pretty sure they've had a police department since the town was incorporated in 1896.

Completely understand your frustration. I grew up off of Newington Road which intersects with Telegraph. We had a mailbox on our street and our mailing address was "Lorton." Hayfield Elementary and Secondary have a mailing address of "Alexandria." Very confusing.

If I told people I lived in "Newington", the one located near the Mount Air ruins, people thought I meant Newington Forrest or Newington Station. It's like we never had our own identity!!
