Diversity is not all it is cracked up to be.
We are each a minority of one, which is difficult enough for most people to have to deal with. Then, along come foreigners and suddenly there are masses of minorities to deal with. We are no longer a minority of one, but a minority of Pakistanis, Indians, "Whites" - whatever. Now, we have to start all over again, with each new batch of immigrants, persuading them that they are not an asian minority or a Latino minority, etc., but that each is a minority of one. Our HUMANITY is more important to us than our ethnicity or former natonality, and in some cases, it must be impresed upon people that it is more important than any exclusivity dictated by their religious convictions. To recognize and develop this sense of uniqueness in each of us, is to be a fine human being and, according to Christian theology, a true child of God.
There comes a time when the line from the old spiritual no longer apllies. Instead of imploring, "Pharoah, let my people go !"; you are the one who must let your "Pharoahs" go. It is seldom "The Man" who is the problem; but more often it is simply a man who is the problem. Nobody is perfect, and sometimes, that man is oneself. One must have the courage to inquire and the resolve to carry it through to a successful conclusion. Occasionally, one must even become the leader and catalyst for change.
