What are employers saying about cellphones at work?

I've heard enough breast beating about students and the interminable battle over cellphone use in the classroom. While the adults are texting just as often.
What are employers saying about cell phones and texting at work?

My employer is now allowing us to retrieve corporate email on our personal devices. It's saving them a ton of money on company issued cell phones. When I'm on my phone I might be texting my friends or responding to a coworker's email. As long as I do my job, nobody cares.

Do you work at a McDonalds?
My employer doesn't care at all, as long as I get all my work done on time.

I impose performance improvement plans on anyone that does not reach tangible, measureable goals without sufficient justification. Of the employees I have had to terminate, most have undoubtedly failed to balance their personal/professional needs. One was notorious for ducking into a conference room with his cellphone for a good hour. Another was notorious for spending hours on message boards like this one. No surprise that both were black.

One of the sections I managed before retiring was the
main switchboard for a medium sized agency and productivity
was a constant battle. Here's what happened before personal
cell phones were available. First, I had to teach the new hires
that FTS does not stand for Free Telephone Service. I used
the SMDR (Serial Message Detail Recording) to check how
much time my staff was spending on personal calls. It was
enormous and all four of the operators were totally out of
line. After that, they were aware that the calls were being
checked. The next month I ran an SMDR on the fax machines as
well and discovered they had simply started using them to
make their personal calls instead. When I asked them why
there were four hours of personal calls on the lines per day
and they played dumb. Ironic they were all going to DC and PG County
residential numbers. I said, "Alright, if those numbers
show up again, I will block them through the telephone
system and you will not be able to call them at all."
Problem solved for a while.
Then came personal cell phones. We didn't have a policy on
personal cell phone usage at that time so I sat down with
the powers that be and we came up with one. Essentially it
said if your productivity suffers as a result we will put
you through Progressive Discipline. Good luck dealing with
that one. The rules regarding productivity in Federal government
are totally fucked up and need to be replaced with something
more effective but good luck with that one too. The first time
Obama ran for President he promised he'd institute Performance
Management (Pay for performance) in the Federal government.
After being elected he dropped the idea due to pressure from
Federal employees unions. In other words, if they institute PM
the first to go will be black employees. For some reason they
are more prone than others to suffer what I called "Telephoneitis".

Nope, not McDonald's. You don't need to know what line of work I'm in.
But, I will say that, if I'm distracted because I'm fucking around with a cell phone on the job, people can die and millions of dollars in damage can result.

No, but it is the amount of damage you can do with one.

Cell phones, or any wireless devices, are banned in any secure area including those which are contractor run. If you're going to Langley, you know how far away it is from the facility that they must be turned off just as with many other such places. There are scanners in place throughout.

I work at McDonald's too and all of my co-workers, including store manager and all shift managers work with their only one hand since the other one is occupied on their smartphones. Sometimes the staff at the front counter turn their backs to clients and chat on the phone. They just ignore the long line in front of the counter and show each other photos, videos and funny things on the phone.

My employer allows it only on breaks and lunch, if we are caught with it other than those times then we get written up. Working for the Navy, they had jammers in the building that would block any cell service inside. Employers need this technology.

People want to put their personal devices on my work network. It's very irritating having to explain that company policy does not allow for random devices to be connected to our network (Yes, I know you don't work for the Chinese but then again, maybe you do).

By the book, you're not supposed to have it on you where I work. That said, it became obvious very quickly that not one amongst 150ish employees was adhering to that, including those in management positions. Suffice it to say we are essentially on an honor policy at this point. Tolerated but not encouraged, as long at it doesn't impact your work, no one cares.

That's an old picture. No red & white striping, strobe lights or stupid lug nut reflectors.

They are not "stupid lug not reflectors".
They are called "Wheel-Checks", (aka Torque Loss Indicators). Wheel-Check is the brand name. With Wheel-Checks installed, the operator can tell at a glance if a lug nut has loosened, which is a very common occurrence on big trucks and buses.

Whatever you call them, they are useless on the Dulles mobile lounges. The so called "operators" never look at the lug nuts on their equipment. Their sense of awareness of their vehicles is no better than a granny and her Buick. Those particular lug nuts never just "back off" but instead the stud itself partially or completely fractures and the nut never turns. The only good these fluorescent nut ornaments do is help Ops or maintenance personnel find them on the ground.

well, since you didn't even know what they were, I won't bother explaining about stupid pre-trip inspections required of all CDL drivers. You are an idiot.
