I figured it would happen sooner or later, but didnt expect such hostility towards having an African American President to happen this soon.

My daughter attends Westfields High and happend to be standing with a group of her friends who are all African American, when a group of approx 5 Caucasian boys walked past and in doing so, yelled out "Fuck all blacks, hang them by a tree". A remark was then made about President Elect Obama as well, also a racial slur.

All five of the boys are seniors and it has been brought to the staff's attention, albeit late in the day, so I dont expect much to be done until Monday. In spurting out such a remark, they have placed themselves in jeopardy of not being able to walk across that stage at the end of the year. I wonder if they thought about that, before they opened they're mouths. Not likely.

Actually, calling someone "African-American" is very racist. How do you know the person is African, or even that, American? He could be British, he could be Aboriginal. So to summarize, just call them niggers.

Then why do they have Historically Black Colleges and Universities? Fine, if they don't like the term blacks, use the term coloreds. They have to be okay with that, since there is the NAACP.

And in that vein, racism sourced from any quarter is wrong - including, as I unfortunately all too often see, from minority communities. Perhaps we should keep this in mind as we trod down the road towards a post-racial society.

If you are proud to be an American then you need to be proud of Americas choice; your president. United States is not just a name, but a meaning our founding fathers have set, for a reason. "United" means to come together whether you are Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic etc. It's a country which came together from all different cultures and religions. The United States is not just any country, but it is a country that showed the world that diversity can become "one".

If anything was to divide us apart; race should be the last reason the United States gets divided.

The future projects an image showing everyone working together as humans and not categorized into different races. You have the choice to open your eyes and see this image projected by the "future". You are not better than anyone and no one is any better than you are.

Bush was disliked. Obama is being threatened to be killed because of his color.

No, I really do not have to be proud of America's choice. Loving America, being proud to be an American, has nothing to do with bring proud of the people's choice.

I love my wife, I love my son, I am proud to be associated with both of them. That does not mean I am proud of or approve of everything they do.

I agree. We are defined as Americans by a common love of freedom and liberty, and by living in the US. That doesn't mean I overlook our differences or approve of all perspectives. But I am proud to call my Democratic, liberal, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Black, Asian, Hispanic, and any other group I don't happen to belong to (and in some cases, disagree with) American my fellow American.

Being American doesn't mean I agree with all groups, it means I accept their right to believe and act as they see fit. Even if I do disagree.

Again, I disagree. There are most certainly people I am better than (Hitler comes to mind) and people who are better than me (Mother Teresa comes to mind).

As for the conduct of the kids, it's unacceptable, and writing it off as boys being boys is not the way to deal with it. They'll just keep getting worse with it. Respond quickly and decisively, but I don't think they should be expelled or lose their right to walk with their class.

I just wanted to update you on the situation thus far. The school is currently questioning several kids that claim to have known who the group of boys were that made the racial slur, however many of the kids so far are not giving up any names. All we know so far is that they are all seniors and that some maybe involved in football. It is still in the early stages of investigation.

I know that several of the students parents have called in and have requested that once the group that made the slur are found, that they should not be allowed to walk across the stage with they're class.

I have sat down with my daughter who was one of the girls in the group and asked her how she felt. She said that although she doesnt agree with what they said, she feels that an apology by each one would be enough. She said that she understands that there are many people that do not agree with the outcome of the election and she feels that this group was voicing they're frustrations with it. She believes that it could have been voiced in a different manner rather than attacking the group about they're race, but understands that people are going to say hurtful things. Her concern is not so much what a group yells out, but rather any actions that could become of they're frustrations. She would be satisfied with an apology and feels that they should be able to walk across the stage as they have all worked hard for the past four years to get that right of passage. I am very proud of her and how she has dealt with this. She has acted like more of an adult than some of the parents I know that have called in to the school.

I'll get back with you all when I know more about what happens.

Your daughter seems very grown up and a good kid. It is very mature of her to be able to accept an apology after what happened, which was cruel and unjustified.

I sincerely hope we will be able to look back one day and view racism as odd as everyone not having the right to vote, or separate bathrooms and such. As older generations die off I would expect that to happen. I wasn't alive at any time where segregation was alive, and MLK was assassinated before I was born... I just don't get the racism thing. Hopefully now that we'll have a minority president all races in the US will see it is possible here to rise to the top, and racist actions will become a rarity, both in public (like what happened at Westfield) and in private.

If it's football players ar Westfield involved, you can forget any disciplinary actions being taken. They have a big game against Chantilly Friday.

But either way, while I do not support what these young men said, it does not seem to be a big deal to me. Some people don't like other races. Blacks should be proud of the fact that a African American is taking the white house, that is a huge step for this country. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that an 18-year-old freshman at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Annie Grossman, was assaulted by four young women on election night. The attackers called Grossman a "racist" because she was wearing a McCain/Palin button. Grossman was diagnosed with blurred vision and a concussion.

The four attackers are believed not to be Augsburg students, but Grossman's parents say she has had trouble in school, too:

If you believe that racist remarks about Obama and non-whites are only being made by less-educated or less-intelligent people, you're fooling yourself. You have to remember that almost half of the voters did not vote for Obama and a lot of wealthy individuals and corporate executives are Republicans. Have you scanned the Internet blog sites or read the racist emails flying around? I would suspect they're being written by average and above-average people who work in office-settings all day and have time to waste on the Internet.

Check out the timestamps on the postings. Not many blue-collar workers have access to the Internet all day. (I will admit that I'm making an assumption that's who you're referring to when you say less-educated. I don't agree with that line of thought, as I have a lot of respect for the people who build the office buildings, make cars, build homes, pick up trash, fix my plumbing and A/C when it's broke, etc. -- a lot more respect than I have for a big percentage of the white-collar nitwits that I interact with in mid-level meetings all week long.)

But, unlike the blue collar workers, these wealthier people had a legitimate reason to vote for McCain instead of just that the fact that Obama is black. McCain's economic plan would work better for them.

White-on-black racism causes more damage due to the greater power whites as an aggregate continue to hold, both from sheer numbers and historic reasons.

Black-on-white racism does nothing to help blacks and serves as an excuse for racist whites to perpetuate their grudges.

Less-powerful whites don't benefit either from the mostly-white power structure and are indeed often harmed by it. On the other hand, their net loss is less than the loss of their black 'counterparts' of equal power.

White whiners are just as annoying as black whiners, if not more so.

You can't legislate morality, and you can't stop people from saying things you think are stupid. What you can do is stop trying to say everyone who doesn't think like you and talk like you deserves to be punished.

If this is an example of the academic freedom allowed in our countty schools, we're further down the path to doom than I thought. We have far better things to spend our school's budget on, but I bet a lot of paid school folks spent a lot of hours trying to track down the 'perpetrators' of what is expressly allowed and defined in our Constitution - freedom of speech.

It depends. While a one-off slur might be something better shrugged off, a constant campaign of harassment (of any sort) deserves to be taken seriously.

The US just elected a black man President of the Unites States. There is no longer any reason for whining about socio-economic disadvantage, white power, whatever. If a black man can become POTUS that means that everyone who complains of underpriviledge should get off their butts and go to work.

When I did that and climbed out of abject poverty, it was no special thing because it's what this country is made of - hard work and commitment. Using disadvantage as an excuse is no longer valid. With hard work any person can become President or whatever else they want irrespective of past wrongs by past generations. While those wrongs were indeed heinous and wrong, they are the past.

Of course many people consider whining to be hard work!

Well that's a relief because as a white guy I've hated the term (emhasis "term") "African-American" since it was first trotted out by the PC police. Not only is it awkward to spit out but, as you mention, it applies to citizenship and maybe ancestry but has little to do with race (Charlize Theron is African-American by that standard).
