I was at the Manor Care on Rt 50 last week for a visit. There were fire trucks, two ambulances and three police cruisers. When inquiring what the problem was, I was told someone (this is a nursing/rehabilitation facility) called 911 because a resident had to go to the hospital. REALLY? Fire Trucks...3 Police Cruisers??? I was wondering how much that one trip cost us, and where other excesses are seen in the county...share yours.

Besides you not really knowing what really happened since the staff gave you a little something to get rid of you, all those people and pieces of equipment are already paid for. Try living in many of the other dumps in this state, call 911 and see what you get , virtually nothing.

Not the point...tax dollars being wasted is the point...taking a ladder truck to the Giant to pick up groceries is another one...just send ONE PERSON to the store in their auto. Tax Dollars are the issue.

Fairfax Fire Department spends several million a year on an internal publication called "Line Copy."
So far, all the use the general public gets out of it is to learn that James Craig Summers (convicted sex criminal: forcible sodomy) used to enjoy dinner with his shift.

There's not much you can do. The supervisors only listen at election time.
Fairfax just keeps growing government for the hell of it. Take for example this artificial turf task force. A task force? Either you can afford it or you can't.
And why do we have a whole housing department unit for universal design? Yes it is good idea, but why spend money when there are already so many houses here where it does not apply?
You can't fire county employees, and ones like Ed Long who are appointed don't even bother to answer their email, once again, nothing happens except at election time.
We sent aid to Japan, not exactly a poor country, when they had the tidal wave.
When we had the derecho, did Japan come over and help us get our power back? No of course not.

* They need to cut out subsidized housing. When a metro area has a low unemployment rate such as we have, then why do lazy people need their housing subsidized? They can work 2 jobs of they want a roof over their head. Problem solved.
* Cut out the Fastran buses. The county has a number of these in operation. Yet, I highly doubt that they are truly being used to their full potential by senior citizens. With so many other transportation options in the county, Fastran is not needed.
* Cut out the Fairfax fair. They have nothing but 3rd rate artists who were once popular (30 years ago) showing up and providing concerts for the fair. Plus, most legal Fairfax residents don't show up at the fair because it is overrun with illegals and the mothers who endlessly keep pushing out babies.
* Dump the idea of the Columbia Pike trolley. Sure, it's a nifty idea, but it will cost many times more than it is worth. Nostalgia is too costly.

Yes. You are correct. However, the Mason district of Fairfax county borders this area so plenty of attention is being applied towards this project. Yes, even though it would be in Arlington, Arlington wants Fairfax to pay for part of it and that nitwit Sharon Bulova thinks that is a good idea.
Want more waste? Fairfax BURNED 250,000 books in Reston as part of a pilot project to make the libraries into Internet cafés. On one hand you have Tammy Kaufax, Ryan McElveen and Patty Reed screaming for more school money but then there will be no books in the libraries. That's real smart.
Oh yes, this turf thing. The school board decided they did not need science books, but man oh man, they sure had to have another 2 million or so for artificial turf.
The turf project is nothing but a subsidy for the sports clubs. They don't help kids learn and the upkeep on them runs tens of millions a year-if you don't believe that, just look at what costs to keep the Astrodome up and running.

One of the more egregious examples of Fire Department waste is the fire boat they keep at Pohick Bay Park. Every weekend, you will see these idiots out on the River wasting time and fuel.
About a mile from their dock they enter Maryland waters. Do they stop there? Hell no! They push the throttles to the wall (burning at least 30-40 gallons an hour of diesel fuel) and head north to National Harbor, MARYLAND. They tie up there and bullshit around for hours.
Sometimes you'll see them above the WW Bridge in DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA waters. DC waters are served by far more capable DCFD fire vessels.
At least they got rid of the FCPD police boats. They say it was budget cuts, but I'll bet they tried to fuck with somebody in a mega-yacht out of their jurisdiction, in Maryland waters. Here's one--behind the houses off of 29 in Centreville: The Katherine Hanley Family Shelter on Katherine Hanley Court. Anyone who has sat in traffic on Stringfellow for the last 10 years can feel good that their sacrifice went toward a good cause instead of widening that damned road. And to show how proud the good-doers are of their accomplishment, they hid the shelter. BTW, the county did the same thing with that "Crossroads" halfway house off of Van Dorn near Telegraph. Can't even see that one from the road.

I'm out there every weekend and I haven't seen the Fairfax police boat in ages, but I will defer to your wisdom, douchebag.
I generally stay in the channel when I cruise the Potomac (Maryland waters), so maybe they have been ordered to stay in their jurisdiction and maybe that's why I haven't seen them. If so, that's the next best thing to axing FCPD's "Marine Patrol".

The saline type. Virginia's state line is 3' beyond the low tide mark. Fairfax County Police have boats to assist DC and MD. The boats are trailered.

I've cruised the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida, but The Potomac is my home waters. You know, close to home and shit.
It will be a sad day when MD DNR or DC Harbor Branch needs "assistance" from our FCPD idiots. Those are both highly trained and very well equipped Marine Patrols, not local ticket writers that want to spend the day on the water at taxpayer expense.

Code Enforcement makes a big deal of keeping your grass cut. If they come out and do it, it is a $500 charge/fine.
They say it is because "critters" (their word) hide in high grass.
But-they don't mow the medians etc. all that often, and blame budget cuts at VDOT etc.
So it is OK for there to be "critters" in the County grass? Kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think?
Good luck getting that overpaid crybaby Ed Long to come up with a meaningful response, by the way.
I'd wager you could get rid of at least one in 5 county employees and close the same number of offices and no one would ever notice.

There's an island in our cul-de-sac which is county grass. It is about 2 feet hight right now and full of snakes and cicadas. The county won't mow it but when they did come out they said my neighbor's grass was almost too high. They issued him a warning.
