Lots of police, fire, ambulance...helicopter circling and landed at school...just left. Anyone know what is going on?

Then the home owners around the school would bitch because of the lights being on at night.

This all happened literally in my back yard... counted 4 ambulances, 4 firetrucks, 5 police cars, and 1 helicopter.

oh well. another reason why these stupid kids get in trouble. climbing on top of the school's where they shouldnt be. guess they wont make that mistake again. no common sense.

The three kids just finished 8th grade at Rachel Carson Middle School. One is dead (news just announced it). Their names are floating around on Twitter. Not sure who the fourth is who was supposedly with them but didn't go to the hospital.

What I find most startling is the girl who was on the news being interviewed, the one going on about how people hang out there all the time. They do? Is hanging out on a school roof commonplace?

My kids have been told not to be on school grounds outside of school hours without adult supervision. It's not Neighborhood Watch's responsibility to report kids trespassing at a school after hours. This is parent fail.

Tragic what happened if this is true. I dont understand why they were messing around with high voltage power lines. Granted most of the time they are sealed there can be cracks to expose the braided aluminum wire. I did some stupid stuff as a kid but messing around with powerlines was not one of them.

A teen was electrocuted and three others were injured after they climbed onto a Herndon elementary school roof Tuesday, Fairfax police say.

The 14 year old became entangled in the electrical lines on the roof of Fox Mill Elementary School shortly before 9 p.m., according to Don Gotthardt of Fairfax Police. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Its been confirmed that Bennet Rill was killed after falling off the roof of Fox Mill Elementary, trying to grab onto a wire, and was electrocuted. His friend,Jeffrey Simon, was there too, and tried to help him up. He got electrocuted as well, but he's alive in the hospital. He's an 8th grade, though I'm half-certain he attended Franklin Middle School in Fairfax VA. He was on the roof while hanging out with a couple of his friends on the last day of school.It is believed he fell as an accident. The incident happened around 7:30-9PM on June 18. For all those who it concerns, the rooftop is not a "common" place to hangout for teens as stated by that girl on the news. Climbing on the roof was more of a dare or one one time thing that kids would try. No one is purposely playing with live wires, they just happen to be right where kids can climb onto the roof. These kids not playing with wires.

The girl should have chose her words wisely because that just tells us its the probably past kids fault causing such mishap to happen for future unforseen consequences. Kids these days are just plain stupid and parents fail at parenting. Does anyone ever bring a fucking flashlight before going out at night anymore? -_-

Don't criticize the kids, they are kids. The school should have made sure this was not accessible to them. No parent should have to bury their child. This is tragic. Also think about the poor boys that survived, they have to recover and live with the terrible memory of a tragic event.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were called to Fox Mill Elementary in Herndon Tuesday evening when several juveniles were injured in a fall from the roof of the school.

County Fire and Rescue posted the emergency call to its Twitter feed, saying a "young male hanging from conduit approx 8 - 10 ft off the ground. "

Crews were still on the scene about 9:45 p.m. trying to assess what happened. At least two teens were taken to the hospital, fire officials said.

No, I don't think any parent tells a kid to go play on a roof and that's not what I was implying. Playing on the roof of ANY building is not safe. MOST people inherently are aware of this but, evidently there's one crispy burnt dead kid and another burnt one in the hospital who don't.

I grew up with my elementary school in the 70's right outside my back fence and I routinely climbed on the roof for fun. Heck, I held the chin up record at the school and took pride in how fast I could climb to the roof using any number of available gutters. It was fun in a stupid kind of way, permitted me and my buddies to look into the principal's office through a skylight. Me and my buddies never destroyed any property. Stupid? Yes. Unusual? Heck no. This is why this is tragic. And is it not a parent fail, either.

You must not remember anything from your teen years. Kids make dumb choices. I know I made plenty as a teenager, and I was far from a troubled kid and had two very involved parents. Every teen says "nothing bad will happen".

Parenting can only do so much. You can tell kids not to drink, not to smoke, not to speed, not to text and drive, and they will still do it because they think they can get away with it and nothing bad will happen.

But we also have a responsibility to do what we can to protect dumb kids from themselves. If kids were "frequently" on the roof of the school, then steps should have been taken to make it harder to do so, either with lights, moving the shed away from the school, putting up some sort of wall/fence along that portion of the roof to prevent access, etc.

On the other hand, this was a freak accident. You could put a lot of money into trying to prevent something that has a one-in-a-million chance of happening again. Is it worth it? I'm sure the parents of the boy who died would say yes.

Those children had no business up on that roof, and this is what happens when children are allowed to run wild.

Why should the county remove the shed?

Yes it is sad that a child was killed, but the parents have the task of being the parent. This is the situation we have here in Fairfax County - Parents with little or no control of their children.

14 years is not enough, and these parents are the ones the must carry the guilt for their lack of parental control.

I was shocked to hear the name this morning. This boy was a teammate of my son's during the early elementary years and his dad was a wonderful and involved coach. Teens get into so much trouble and there's no way the parents can anticipate everything. This school is in a neighborhood, surrounded by homes, and easily accessible by foot or bicycle.

It blows our minds the stupid and risky things teens get into. They are impulsive and immature even through the college years. Most kids get second chances, which is why this is so tragic.

Expose wires though - that had to be a risk even for the folks who do maintenance on the building.

School building might be an "attractive nuisance"

That doctrine provides that children are unable to control their impulses, and when a piece of property has some feature that children find interesting (pond, tower, etc.), that owner should anticipate that children may be drawn to that feature, and should take appropriate measures to protect such child trespassers.

The trailers are semi-permenant structures. Why we have them littering out school grounds is a function of budget limitations. You would think being the richest County in the country (or one of the richest) we could afford to educate our kids absent the dangers of make-shift trailers. We have a bunch of them at our ES and I can tell you the electric hook ups are indeed temporary. Kids do stupid things but how many of them get electricuted at home or around permenant structures? There are other safety issues with these trailers from off-gassing, to security, to vunerability in storms - they are not safe.

There are costs to being cheap about our schools and this is one of them...

A Fairfax County teen was electrocuted and three more were hospitalized after an incident on the roof of a trailer next to Fox Mill Elementary School Tuesday night.

The four teens — three age 14 and one age 15 — were on the roof of a teaching trailer behind the school shortly before 9 p.m. when Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials were called, according to Fairfax County police spokesman Don Gotthardt.

“Police and fire were called shortly before 9 p.m. and found four teenagers. One apparently was found entangled in what appears to be some sort of electrical wire. We believe he was electrocuted and was pronounced dead at the scene,” Gotthardt said Tuesday night. “The wire was attached to the back side of the school. The three other teens were all taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Police have not released the identities of the teens. Gotthardt said they were all Fairfax County Public School students, but not at Fox Mill Elementary. Gotthardt described them all as “local kids,” and added that they did not appear to be trying to enter the school.

According to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue records, the deceased teen was discovered “hanging from conduit approx 8-10 ft off the ground.”

The school is at 2611 Viking Drive in Herndon.

FCPS spokesman John Torre said Tuesday night that the teens were on the roof of the building.

“It is my understanding that there is a shed on the back of the building that you can climb up and get access to the roof of the school from,” Torre said. “Apparently there are some wires along the roofline that may have been what was involved here.”

According to a Fox Mills Estates resident who lives adjacent to the school and wished to remain anonymous, neighborhood teens often climb up on the roof of the school to “hang out.”

Fox Mill Elementary School Assistant Principal Brian Moose acknowledged that there is a shed behind the school with wires and conduits that can be accessed. “You could climb it pretty easily,” he said.

Torre said he did not know of students doing that.

“I am not quite familiar with that, but it was the last day of school and school was let out today, and these kids are not students here at Fox Mill, but they were apparently trying to access the roof for whatever reason. It is very sad news and our thoughts and our best wishes are extended to the families,” Torre said.

This teaching trailer behind Fox Mill Elementary school is often used by teens to climb up onto the school’s roof, according to nearby residents.

Not sure what that picture is suppose to be but its not a FCPS security employee. Do you know how many school security guards are working in the county that time of the night?

The responsibility for this tragic accident lays with the kids. They are old enough to have known better then to be trespassing on the school. Does not matter if the kids trespassed there "all the time", they still knew it was wrong. They chose to do something illegal and sadly people got hurt.

My question is had this kid been caught at the school before? Did his parents know where he was and what he was doing? Not blaming the parents but their kid is the one that made poor choices.

Actually it is the parent's fault. It happened around 9pm on Tuesday night, they were all minors, so its not the school's fault to watch these kids after they leave. This was the parent's failure to properly superviser their kids. Yes, the kids shouldn't have been up there, but guess what parents? You are responsible for your kids while they're still minors. I'm a parent and guess what? I do my job, because I know what kids do. I've very sad for these parents and my hopes and prayers are with them and their families, as well as their friends & community. Bad things happen to good people, but alot of that can get prevented if parents realize their job is their children.

If this had been in Loudoun, we would have shot them for terrorism.

Are you a parent of teenagers? You may think you know where they are at all times but you don't. This was a tragic accident -- can't pin it on the parents. Teens do stupid things. End of story. No amount of parenting can stop peer pressure and the natural desire to test limits.

This is a tragedy. A total tragedy. But the trailers didn't kill anybody. Don't blame the trailers.

I am so lucky to have parents that told me when I was growing up "Don't play with the electrical power lines."

Tis a shame the young lad didn't do it at the beginning of the year and save all that time/effort on this year's schooling.

The level of idiocy on this topic is appalling. The video of the guy on the train goes so far beyond good taste, it's sad. They made a mistake and paid for it. No use pontificating about "I learned never to..." or "I had parents who..." His parents seem like fine people who stood up to the cameras and answered questions...would we be that strong. The boy who died was a fine young man by all accounts. It's sad...that the boy died, but it's sadder that people post such terrible things about their neighbors or people they don't even know. The web certainly has given people a voice but sometimes the wrong one.

There is plenty of room to add on to that school...the CORRECT way. Not trailers with wires hanging all over the place.

Trailers are the norm in FCPS. Once they are in they never seem to go away. Our school budget is over a BILLION dollars. We should demand better for our kids and teachers.

Did they charge them with trespassing?

This is what Jack Dale asked for before he almost died from too much sun.

2.4 billion and we have trailers? What a scam. This is our tax payer money.

We need to stop Gatehouse and their trips to Disney World and focus on our kids.

Were the youths brown skinned savages, pretending the power lines were jungle vines?

When is oshammy scheduled to speak about this? Will he give the same 'if I had a son, it would look like this crispy fired bacon' speech?
