SPRINGFIELD, Va. - The serial groper who has been preying on women in the Springfield area of Fairfax County has struck again.
Police say a 32-year-old woman putting luggage into her car at the Springfield Square Apartments on Franconia Court Tuesday is his 22nd victim.
"She was putting suitcases in her trunk and felt someone come up behind her and grope her, and by the time she could turn around, he was running away," Lucy Caldwell of Fairfax County Police says.
"I still can't believe they haven't caught him yet," says Reem Masri. "I like to run and walk, but I don't do it at night time now."
Police say the groper doesn't wait until cover of darkness to strike. Several of the attacks have been during the day. Tuesday's attack was at 7 p.m. and the sun was still out.
"I don't know what to say," Sepideh Safaei says. "I just hope they catch him soon."
Some residents would like to see police get more aggressive about catching the fondler, whose victims range in age from 15 to 49.
"We need undercover cops, women out there, to try and catch him," a neighbor says.
"I think they should start patrolling where the people are," says Elizabeth Mairena. "Look for people loitering. This is very disconcerting."
Fairfax County Police are holding a community meeting Thursday night at Crestwood Elementary School, giving out information and asking for some too.
"With investigations like this, it's going to take a tip from the public to solve it,” Caldwell says.
The community meeting at Crestwood Elementary School starts at 7 p.m. The school's address is 6010 Hanover Street in Springfield.
A Spanish-speaking interpreter will be there.
