I can't place that Dunkin Donuts location. Are you thinking about Mister Donut in Fairfax City at RT 29 - 211 and RT 50?

Cary doesn’t care about this site anymore. It’s a cesspool of bottom feeders and he allows it to happen. It’s apparent he’s giving up and allowing his own creation to die a slow painful death.

Dunkin donuts was on 29-211 across the streer from the breezeway motel in the 1960s. Mr donut was behind the gas station that later became penguin feather. By the early 80s the old dunkin building had become a waffle house. I dont think Mr donut and dunkin were ever operating at the same time. That is how I remember it anyway. I am old.

You are correct about the location but they were in fact operating in the same time frame.

There was a donut shop in the late sixties-early seventies across from the Breezeway Motel, but it was an independent shop called The Donut Hut. It was in the rear of the building next to Midas that has a couple of small restaurants in it now. Peppers Texas BBQ was in the front of the building.

The Safeway that can be seen in the background closed about 1973 and became one of those cheap carpet stores.

At that intersection across from the Breezeway Motel there a Gulf station that became a Midas Muffler Shop. On the other side of intersection was a Mobil station that became The Waffle House. There was a United Virginia Bank on the last corner of the intersection.

You're most likely confusing it with the Safewqy in Annandale which became a club in that time period. I don't think the one at KW was ever anything but a Safeway and a carpet store.

I remember a night club of some kind that was very near the old Safeway. It was in the building that was the former ABC Store.

I recall a story that the club was losing money, so the owner torched it. As it burned he sat across the street in the Mister Donut, eating donuts and drinking coffee. Late 1970's - Early 1980's

About 1978-79 I don't know if they proved arson. It was at KW on rt50 as its being called on the side where the Bills Carpet is or was. That Octagon was the Fuddruckers on 123 , it was a womans store before that for a long time. Never knew it was a sports camera place. I don't remember a club where Safeway was in Annandale Tom Westons, Wagon Wheel a cheap steak cafeteria type place by day music dancing and beer at night and late 70's Fantastic Fritzbe's Flying Food Factory by the grocery store and their yards of beer

The tower located at Routes 7 & 123 known as (Site E) was originally purposed for line of site communication between a federal government facility in nearby Langley, VA (McLean) and their facilities in Warrenton/Remington, VA. All still operate today.

Microwave line of site comm. is outdated and used as secondary/backup to preferred secure fiber optic and satellite uplink/downlink.

What Safeway in Annandale?

There was one in the 50s and very early 60s (I think) that turned in a bank.
Today it is Bank of America, except a while back the shrunk and leased
out the side of building to Korean nightclubs. Honey Pig.

Yeah, that bank of America building across from Jiffy Lube used to be a Safeway. There was a club in there with an entrance on the side toward the old elementary school in the early 8os. I don't think it was Korean club then, or at least it had a very sizable non- Korean clientele.

Today's Bombay Bistro is very close to the site of the old trolley stop at Wiley on the Washington-Virginia Railroad. Coming down from the Fairfax Electric Depot, the cars crossed Route 50 out of Railroad Street, then looped behind the 29 Diner and over to 123. That's where the stop was. The Best Western hotel just a little farther on is shaped like a trapezoid because it was built up against the trolley line right-of-way headed up to Oakton.

This hardware store was on Columbia Pike right below Baileys Crossroads, where the shopping center with Dicks and the Circuit City that became the chain that went out last spring (I can't remember the name) is now located.

There is nothing else around! Looks like mid-50s from the car in the parking lot.

There is something on Fractured Fairfax about some inspector falling to his death while checking out the roof of this place.

Mclean Giant and part of Peoples drug. I can't believe there are no VW's! I am guessing early 70s?

Looks to be late 1940's Traffic on RT.123 looked light the day that picture was taken.

Looks like 123 was a dirt or maybe gravel road back then.

Great picture. Looks like late 70s or 1980... I think that's a 1979 or so Mercury Colony Park wagon (the cream-colored wagon that we can see through the Camaro's windshield).

And if I'm not mistaken, I think that's a (very rare) VW 412 parked at the curb in front of Giant.

That picture of People’s lunch counter reminds me of GC Murphy at Bradlee shopping center in Alexandria. Those kind of places don’t exist anymore, but I remember them well from when I was young. There was a Roy Rogers in the parking lot as well; I think it was the first.

No pictures of Murphy’s, but here’s the old sign.

I think the Maple Avenue Shopping Center is closer to Maple and Lawyer Roads intersection than where the CVS is located currently.

You have a sharp eye hornet. I had almost forgotten about the 411/412 VW's. As I recall they had Fiat engines that might have been liquid cooled. They were not big sellers and were not very attractive.

I remember this place from the mid-60s or maybe earlier. It was Dunkin Donuts at first but later changed its name, either because they went independent or maybe always were independent and got in trouble with DD. I remember a husband and wife ran it; sometimes she'd give my brother and me a doughnut hole as a treat. We called her "the Doughnut lady."

I believe you are being confused by foreshortening. The base of that tower is about the same side as the gas station building. The tower is a way's off.

If it is the same tower, the angles (given the support building next to it) are correct for that being 7&123. The 1962 aerial at historicaerials.com shows the tower and what appears to be the large trees at the corner. Not enough detail to say whether the building is there, given the overhanging trees.

The 1964 aerials shows the interchange being built, so this would be before that.

That is correct that is the location.

Ted Britt would take anything in trade - Including livestock.

Ted Britt was actually a Texas native - he grew up in a small town near San Antonio.

San Antonio was small town 100 years ago, which is when the original Myron was born. Kamp Washington was also just a dusty "junction" when Britt first started to sell cars there.

His dealership in Fairfax, that opened in 1959, was not in Kamp Washington.

Yes, good catch VW spotter. Further research led me to this and I think there might be another VW in this shot too but I'm not sure.

I remember the name of them, people called them by their name all the time loud motorcycles , and the Tysons pits area used to look like a dust cloud with loud motorcycles rode there by the 200 ft tall red radio tower no one ever saw. No Tysons II back then but Tysons Meat locker was there alright and some motorcycle shop with hippies on Rt 7 nearby, probably from low rent Pimmit Hills, Marshall HS types you know.

At least one little person did live in the then semi abandoned Wedderburn estate which backed on to the abandoned Washington and Old Dominion railway right of way.
Road access was off Cedar Lane .

The Pagan's were not at all infamous in their own neighborhood in the 70's. They were just people who lived here who had motorcycles. Small minds since have simply made up stories to tell around the campfire, stories that have no foundation and no place in this thread. Now, get out.

There was nothing unusual about the people who lived in Wedderburn. Except of course in the vivid imaginations of bored local middle school students. Access to the neighborhood itself was meanwhile at the intersection of Luckett Avenue and Wedderburn Lane. There was no access off Cedar Lane until this century when the land was purchased and bulldozed by developers.

Pagans were manufacturing PCP in the 70s.
Dickie Scarborough was convicted of federal firearms charges.
A gunfight in Arlington with members of the Avengers actually occurred.
When you entered Pimmit Hills his house was on the right maybe a dozen houses back.
Yes the Pagan's - who misspelled their own club name we're indeed guys who owned motorcycles but also somewhat notorious criminals.
Look up what I'm saying because you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

In the early 70s we rode or motorcycles up Cedar Lane to the W&OD railroad right of way which was then a gravel path . We turned left and followed about 1/4 mile.
On the left was Wedderburn estate/ Midgetville.
On one occasion one small person confronted us telling us to stop riding on his property.
Perhaps confusing what you personally know with the sum of all knowledge is where you continue to embarrass yourself.

Question: what is the story or original use of the now-Fairfax County property yard? Was this a former motel that was converted? Always wondered. Can't imagine that the county would have purposely designed this for its current use.

Does anyone remember for sure the name of the Suzuki shop in the background of the Volvo dealer picture?
RA Cycles sounds familiar but it was 45 years ago.
I did most of my motorcycle parts shopping at Annandale Marine and Sports Center . The one in the picture had lower labor rates and sold used bikes too.
Thanks for the memories of the Tyson's corner pits.
It was pretty wild west out there with dozens of bikes all going in different directions.
Anyone remember the riding area on Nutley st.in Vienna where the Metro station is now?
