Old Crystal City pic is awesome. You can see the tract of land between Army Navy and either 15th or Hayes street, NOTHING THERE. Was a swamp that I think was drained until maybe the early 80's,

Alternatively, why make a comment that has nothing to do with a posted picture?

Love that picture of I-95 at the Pentagon. That's the REAL "Mixing Bowl" interchange. I will never understand why the Washington Post felt it necessary to mis-apply that name to the Springfield Interchange located less than 10 miles to the south on the same road.

Look at how minuscule the weave area was between inbound VA-27 and inbound I-95. No wonder it caused such massive traffic snarls.

Not fairfax, but close enough in Alexandria.

Powhatan Shopping Center, at the intersection of Powhatan and Rt 1. Torn down sometime in the late 60's early 70's.

Also, interesting link with pictures of Lewin Park, the residential neighborhood between Kingstowne and 395 that got torn down recently:

Little Europe was in the Westlawn shoping center.

Bears Hear, is that where Applebees is now on Broad St.?

Yes, Westlawn was at Rt.50 and Annandale Rd. Bill Page owned it and tore it down and is expanding his Honda dealership. He is also going to put some kind of shopping center back in there.

That is where Applebees is. Mountain Jacks, that's the name I couldn't remember, thanks.

That's not from 1951, the video was produced in 1984. It's in the end credits and look at the cars...

Holy Crap Sleepy, that is a great picture of Page. I never imagine that it was that old. I always thought maybe it opened in the 60's. I remember that end support by the service dept. with the 3 holes in it. It's filled in now. Good job on finding the photo.

@DH...glad you like, it is sweet. How about this one...Page's temporary location while the new place is being built. At that time 2 Esso's were close by on Arl Blvd...one at Annandale Rd intersection and one at Graham Rd intersection...I'm thinking this is Graham Rd by the slope down of the Blvd.... I could be wrong.

I am really lost on the Esso photo. You are right about the Esso's at Annandale Rd. and Graham. I just can't place the photo. If that is Arl. Blvd., is it going east or west?? I think a key might be that larger building on the left side of the photo.

I believe its going east on 50 after Graham Road about where the Shell station and the fire station are located and that little shopping center, that used to have a Safeway now some sort of Latino grocery store.

At first I thought it might be looking west from right near 7 Corners toward Annandale Rd., but on second thought, I am thinking that it is looking East from Graham Road toward Annandale Rd. That rise in elevation might have been where some sort of church at the top of the crest on the left hand side was built.

On the other hand, eastward looking is also viable. If this is the case, I would place the Esso station where there now is (I believe) the Sleepy Hollow Chevron/Texaco station at the foot of the rise to where there is an exit ramp (approaching Seven Corners) for Rt. 7 east, at the top of which was Ichabod's and a car dealership. Ichabod's eventually turned into Nova 35 (or was it Nova 50?). Also on the ramp was the Hillwood Motel, which is now, I believe, a Public Storage place

Then is 1953 at the earliest. The newest car in that lineup is the '53 Olds on the far and. The oldest is the Buick next to it, a '47 or '48. Then a '52 Pontiac, '51 Mercury and a '50 or '51 Chevy closest to the camera.

By looking a these Page construction photos I am going w/ Annandale Rd/Arl Blvd. If it opened in 1950 this is around 49/50..The same Esso is seen in the far left of top photo..just prior to that areas growth w/ housing etc. What do you think...and again thanks.

I'm thinking your right. If the other Esso picture was at Graham Rd. going east, then the grade would be going down to Annandale and if it was going west, the grade is pretty level that way.
As long as I can remember there has always been an Esso/Exxon on the corner of Arl. Blvd and Annandale Rd. Next to the where the Frozen Dairy bar use to be. Going east from there the grade does go up Arl. Blvd towards 7 Corners. It would make sense that Page's temporary office would be close to where the new dealership was being built.

Since we’re on the topic of Arlington Boulevard and Graham, maybe it’s time to shift the conversation a little bit and discuss the next place that will become part of FFX county history.

Make no mistake, no matter where you live in the county, right around the corner from your house is a fucking dump that’s about to get knocked down. My neighborhood has the Graham Center, one of the county’s premiere shitholes.
Just look at this place: have you ever seen anything so pathetic? Yes, I know Harvest Moon has a long and glorious history as a Kroger, Blackie’s and chink joint and believe me, I love doing the take-out thing on a weekend and scoping out all of the Asian lovelies wearing dresses slit up to their crotch, but let’s face it, this place has to go.

A few years from now, when Bill Page has expanded his empire of rice burners westward, we’ll all log on to FFXU and reminisce about “Sovina Travel” and ask, “.. and just what was “Sovina”? Was that a country?”

So think about it, take a photo of the shithole near your house that’s about to become part of history and post your photo and prediction right here!

@Sleepy- Thanks again for the Page used car photo. It's probably not much later than '53, either. All the cars look in good shape, and the Chevy and the Mercury are probably on their original tires. During the early years of the Korean War, no whitewalls were made. Note those cars, which are '50s or '51s, have blackwalls, but the Olds is back to wide whites. The car behind the line has blackwalls, too. Something that would have been rarer later on in the 50s.

What is even sadder is that back in the late 1950s to mid-1960s people saw all of this coming. When Dulles was being constructed W&OD officials proposed building a spur to the site, but the plan was killed when the railroad was sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio. When the C&O, working in conjunction with the VA Dept of Highways and VEPCO sought to abandon the W&OD a few years later, locals tried to have it preserved for future use as a commuter rail line to Reston, Herndon and (yes even) Leesburg.

Gordon,

I did some work involving the W&OD a few years back when Dominion was extending the existing power lines out toward Purcellville. I've also hiked the entire length of the W&OD at separate time is my mis-spent youth back in the 70"s (before it was paved).

You are right that hindsight is 20/20. In fact, one of the proposed uses for the railbed after the W&OD wen under was to turn it into a highway leading to Leesburg. We got the Access Road instead.

A lot of people think that the power lines run along the bike path. That is wrong, the bike path runs along the power lines. The power lines were there first and are the primary use of that ground. What many pwople don't know is that Dominion can revoke the NVPA easement at any time they feel necessary.

Without knowing the exact location I can't be sure, but it is possible the stack is from the former brewery building. Short history can be found here:

Indeed. It is now the George Mason Square Building that houses Ireland's Four Provinces.

It sat vacant for many years.

You see it in the pic from 1952. By 1977, it was gone. It is the large tract of land center left in the picture above the lone solitary building (which is still there btw).

I found a picture of the destruction of the old Falls Church bank. It replaced the filling station in the 60s. It was demolished in '74.

I opened my very first checking account at Fairfax Co. National Bank when I was a teenager. Then it was located in the upper level parking lot of 7 Corners, next to the post office.

Gordon -- thanks for the Parkington pictures. I'm still waiting for the animals on the Tyson's Meat Locker Building.

Someone had asked early where the milk came from -- it came from out in Floris/Frying Pan Park area and got to town on the W&OD trains. Several of my grandfather's brothers and their families were kicked off the land when Dulles Airport was built. They had dairy farms on that land.

My grandfather was raised on a farm. He thought that the cows were relentess and went into building homes instead.

Oh how the times have changed. To ponder how back then 7-11 encouraged loitering, now its " hurry up and buy!"

I suppose technically this is Loudoun County, but it's close enough.

May 24, 1976, at Dulles Airport. British Airways and Air France simultaneously began Concorde service between Dulles and London/Paris (respectively). The aircraft arrived together.

The French Concorde seen here (F-BVFA) is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

I was just there last night. Well...at the Target in that weird "town center" that's there now. I don't know why, but that place has an eerie vibe for me. Maybe I just miss the old drive-in. Touched my first real vagina there in the back seat of a friend's car back in '79 or '80. Also got chased out of the alley behind Levitz a time or two trying to watch the movies for free while enjoying some tasty Hardee's food.

Every Merrifield thread seems to mention this place.

(Not specifically our lawn jockey here.)

That picture of the jockey reminds me of the RCA dog Nipper that was just down the street on 29 for many years. I believe it moved to Baltimore many years ago. According to the Washington Post there is even a street there now called Nipper Way. Afraid I could not find a pic of the dog when it was on 29.

IIRC, that dog was just up the street from where Captain Pell's used to be prior to moving to their current location. The current location is substantially cleaner....I think I was on a first-name basis with some of the roaches in the old place.

Before it was the Yellow Cab place it was a Chrysler dealer. Then they moved to the top of the hill at 7 Corners where the Chevy dealer use to be. Now it's the Public Storage building.

Shadow, are you sure that pic was shot when Nipper was on 29? I ask because the building in the background doesn't look like the old farmhouse on 29 at Cedar.
