Okay Gordon....get another drink....Color Tile was by the Frozen Dairy Bar.
Luv me some Parkinton Putt-Putt.
Interstate 99 was on 50 in 7 Corners...across from Monkey Wards/Marina-Safeway.
Pretty sure the funky gas station was on 50 up from Jeffeson Village and was a Scott's...gas was always cheaper.

Omstead became the "Bardo Rodeo" for a while before the land was redeveloped for more gentrification "crap."

Brenner's was awesome.

Rumor always was that the ugly blue building was CIA or some other similar intelligence-type agency offices.

Quoting myself to add:

"Located at the corner of North Glebe Road and Fairfax Drive near Interstate 66, the current building – dubbed the “Blue Goose” – was built in 1963 and includes more than 226,000 square feet on a lot of just over 2 acres.

The property is assessed at more than $22 million by county officials, up from $10.5 million a decade ago, but currently is exempt from real estate taxes because of its use as a educational facility.

Before Marymount purchased the property, it was occupied by a number of federal agencies, including at various times the IRS and the CIA."

So apparently the rumors were true.

I worked in the Pentagon electrical shops for 31 years and I loved that building. But in reality, it was thrown up and there was much shoddy workmanship. The concrete form work was awful, with the rebar much too close to the surface. Throughout the building, on exterior walls, you could see rusty, exposed rebar where the thin layer of concrete flaked off.

When it was built, it was a very simple structure. No A/C, a rudimentary electrical system, and of course, no data infrastructure.

Trivia: the Pentagon had a LOT of restrooms, like 275 or so. That was because in the segregated 40's in Virginia, it was assumed that there had to be "white" and "colored" facilities. When Roosevelt heard about that he ordered that the restrooms be open to all.

Yep, was also a Wendy's most recently before it was PNC.

At one time I thought it was a HoJo's, but I guess not if it was a Hot Shoppes.

The Roller Skating arena behind it (note the sign) was a pretty famous concert venue in the 60's and 70's...I believe it got torn down in the early 80's.

Does anyone remember a story of a Doors concert there, where Jim Morrison threw a cymbal and it hit somebody in the audience? Is that right? Sound familiar to anybody?

There are still two old motels right nearby on Washington Street...as these were the closest motels, it makes me wonder which rock stars may have stayed there back in the day.

Or at the George Mason Hotel, a little further down, now an office building (same building, converted to office use).

Great pictures of the Putt-Putt. I remember you had to watch the lights on the shack to see if you got a free game(?) if your colored ball got a hole in one. Also the last hole on the side closest to Glebe was a great launching point to try and send one across Wilson towards the Mazda dealership. Somewhere, I have pictures taken from the FM bank next door showing Putt Putt looking down Wilson. gotta keep digging...Anyone got a picture of the Tastee Freeze on Wilson?

Yes! Used to work around the corner from there, 1986-1990. Went to Five Guys when it really was Five Guys (and a couple of hot girlfriends). Left Arlington, was very surprised to start seeing Five Guys all over the place 15+ years later.

Brenner's rocked. (I'm guessing it's gone?)

Great pic of Westover. Looking at the cars definitely 18 to get beers at 7-11. Used to have a good Chinese takeout place, and the busiest place the first week of school was Ayers 5 & 10. The eclairs at the Westover Bakery were the best!

It's geetting pretty damn hard to do that now. Each time I'm here it seems another page has been added, and if someone asks a question or wants a pic, by the time I can respond someone else already has covered it. This thread probably could benefit from having an index, because there have been so many great things covered in it.

The picture of the repair shop reminded me that in the 1970s and 80s I seem to recall there was a small appliance parts/repair shop in the shopping center at Baileys.

And @ Alex T, I thought the PNC/ex-Wendys was a former HoJos also. Here's some pics in their later life: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mdroute5/5514135862/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mobycat/3856481575/
It seems if the comments are to be believed that the Hot Shoppes was located across the street.

The Amoco signs remind me of a story my Dad tells. He was going to work the day after Hurrican Agnes came through. He was going to his construction job in Manassas, as he was approaching Bull Run on Rte 28 -- the only thing you could see on the other side (Prince Wm. Side) of Bull Run was the top of the flame on the Amoco sign. The station is now a BP but the water was very high.

We always referred top the dead end neighborhood behind McDonalds on Glebe Rd. S. by the auto parts store the Hole. Was a hopping outdoor market for drugs back in the 80's! Is that the same area ?

sleepy H and G blvd--- you got me stumped on the formal dining area. Looks familiar. You say more Falls Church. Only restaurant that I can remember that might have such fine accommodations is the one that sits (sat, not sure what is there now) on 7 west on the right before you get to 29.

Thanks Gordon.....Been trying to find a Zayre front for a while. Red Barn was the best...we would go to the Jefferson Village one often, but the Bailey's one was one my friends and I would show up @10 minutes before closing and they would give us all the food that was prepped...on the house!

I think the Giant Music was in the shopping center at the corner of Linconia Road and Rte 236, just west of I-395. The Landmark Shopping Center was on the east side of I-395. There's a "Ross Dress for Less" store there now.

Am I right??

You're right, forgot that part is W. Glebe. just saw your post about the highrise where Calvert Grill was or is? They getting ready to tear it down? I haven't been over there in a while. Used to buy all my beer at that Highs! I'll have to get down there soon to see the neighborhood again before it's all gone.

This thread keeps them living and every now and then joggles our mind.....enough of the depth...the Giant Music was across from the State Theatre in Falls Church. How about this small pic for the Bailey's Crossroads Ice Cream lovers.

I'll second that one. I didn't remember the name of the gas station, but I definately remember that building being on Rte. 50 between Annandale Rd. and Seven Corners.

Giffords was the best ice cream. Place was always packed during the summer. I know the one in Arlington became a Godfather's Pizza and then Joe's. Isn't the one in Baileys a cleaners. And next to Shakey's was another Annandale shrine. Anyone remember?

We spent nearly every Monday during a couple of Summers playing at the Putt-Putt course across from Parkington. Monday was $1.00 day, all you can play. My mom dropped us off on her way to work and picked us up on her way back. We would walk over to Red Barn on Randolph, and sometimes all the way down to Mario's, for lunch! Can you imagine letting your 14-15 year olds do that in this day and age?

Wasn't that the original number for Shirley Highway?

And I guess it dates me that I still call it Shirley Highway rather than 395.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn-e who.........................

@kings: VA 350 was the Original Shirley

ok, kids:schooltime - EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION :)

about Shirley Highway: it is NOT just 395. Shirley Highway is actually everything from 14th Street bridge all the way down to the Rt 1 exit.

Know how the Rt 1 exit only has ramps that keep ppl going north or south no matter which ramp you take? That's because the ORIGINAL Shirley just split off from the Rte 1 at that point. It was built to connect the Pentagon to Woodbridge. Woodbridge was actaully a HUGE shipbuilding place during WWII. Where the park is off of Featherstone Rd and that Belmont Bay area behind the train station was quite the spot in the 40s I hear.

about Glebe ho's - it's all nicer now but in the 80s, early 90's there were like 3 no-tell Motels on the north side of the interchange there that would become senator traps from time to time. One was a Best Western I dont remember the other two.

oh yeah - if yr paying attention: it was BLACK ANGUS RESTAURANT that Sleepy and I were talking about. It is currently Harvest Moon but was a fairly well known steakhouse back in the day and in fact the shopping center (now called Grahm Center) used to be offically Black Angus Shopping Center. In fact I think it stayed that name for a while even though it changed to Harvest Moon LoLz

On the subject of Brenner's Bakery in Belleview, one of the guys who was a baker there in the 80s/90s(David, I believe) runs the Unique Bakery in Twinbrook Shoppping Center. He doesn't always have the variety of baked goods you would have expected to see at Brenner's in the glass cases but he'll let you special order anything you request from that place (i.e. chocolate top cookies, radio bars, jelly rolls, etc). Everything tastes EXACTLY like you remember from Brenners.

Does any one have pictures of the animals that were painted on the side of Tyson's Meat Locker?

The Herndon/Reston area was all dairy farms, the milk was put on the W&OD trains to go into the city.

The shopping center was "Black Angus Shopping Center" for years after the Black Angus closed. Guess the owners/management company waited until something happened to the sign before they changed the name of the shopping center.

Speaking of Brenners, there was a lady that worked there for years named Mrs. Burke (don't remember her first name), but I worked with her son and every time we'd have a office party, especially Christmas, she'd go all out on the cake and cookies, etc.

i remember the Black Angus restaurant and the High's store around the corner as a kid. There was also a laundromat and a Tru Value hardware store on the corner of the strip at edge of Graham Rd. The Black Angus was a prominent steakhouse and packed every friday and sat night. As kids, we used to marvel at all of the flashy Caddys and Lincolns parked in the lot - no MB or BMWs back then. Went to the Angus with parents two times...in the lobby i remember they had a fountain with tropical fish.

I think I saw the candy section of Farrells at Tysons (sp?) a few posts back. Nothing like eating all the ice cream then having to traverse the candy maze to pay. If it was your birthday you got a free sundae. I would have 2/3 birthdays a summer as that is where my swim team would go to watch movies on Fridays when we were not allowed to go to the pool. Did anybody ever eat the sundae that was brought out with all the fanfare? think it was The Zoo...

Yup, The Zoo, supposedly tons of every flavor they carried, but realyy just an excude to get rid of the ones that weren't selling. My buddy had a birthday party there, we got a Zoo with all the fanfare and were presented with a giant bowl of mostly coffee ice cream...yuk.

We were at the Farrells at Tysons. The guys were running around with the stretcher holding the Zoo and it some how bounced out of it. A huge mess.

Then they were running around and slid into the uncleaned up Zoo from the previous running around. They finally just walked it to the table it was very ridiculous. It still cracks me up, 40 years later.

Remember Lenny Skutnik? Fairfax county resident who dove into the freezing water to save a girls life in the 1982 air Florida crash. Talk about your everyday hero, he was there on the bank of the river with a whole bunch of cops and firefighters. Lenny who was a printer for the CBO takes off his coat and dives in that river to save someone else.
