Thats actually a picture of a Capacitance Electronic Disk and player that came out a little before Laser Disks I think. It was basically a sleeve with an insert that held a disk with grooves like an LP. You'd insert it into the player and pull the sleeve back out then a stylus dropped down and played the movie just like a record player. Picture quality was better than a video tape but they had a real bad habit of skipping which would screw up the movie and sometimes throw the stylus ahead anywhere to a minute to an hour in the movie.

I bought a player from Luskins in Springfield along with "Star Wars" in the early 80s. You could purchase the disks there and at the audio/video store that was in Springfield Mall right around the Spencers Gift store... the name escapes me now. When I purchased my first VCR I discovered that Erols up on Kings Highway and the one at Fair City Mall rented CEDs... man... I went crazy renting them and copying them onto VHS. I still have all those VHS tapes and the ones that didn't skip around a whole lot still look good after all these years.

In time the player died on me and I went back to Luskins and picked up another one. Erols started weeding out the CED section and sold them on the cheap. When the second player crapped out on me I tried to pick up another one from Luskins and all they had were two floor models neither of which worked. I took the two I had apart and used the parts to get a working one that I used to copy the disks that I owned until it finally died. The last view of my 20-30 disk collection was of them lined up next to a trash can waiting for the garbage collectors sometime in the mid to late 80s.

The neat thing about CED was the fact that they had versions of movies available that weren't out there on tape. My one recollection is "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" that had scenes not in the theater release and I could never find it on either beta or VHS... and I tried.

Wow thanks for the memories by showing that picture. I just dragged a couple of old VHS tapes to see just how they looked, and just as I remembered, "Excaliber" bounced all over the place about 15 minutes into it.... ;^)

Early LD's were sometimes packaged in a similar fashion - I worked on a GM "in house" training program in the early 80's and we went with the "enclosed" LD format as we didn't trust dealership employees to handle the disc properly. IIRC Magnavox made the machines handled the cartridge, while RCA (+Sears) handled the unpackaged discs. Oddly enough, the cartridge version outlived the other in field use operations... were in use until the late 80s.

I remember the same a/v store at the mall carried Laser Disks packaged like LPs at the time. I don't ever recall seeing an enclosed LD but if, I remember correctly, Magnavox [Smart, Very Smart (sic?)] always had some great ideas that didn't always get past the mainstream. The best word processor that I ever had back in the old "Brother" days was a two piece Magnavox that did everything I wanted it to do a whole hellavalot easier than anything Brother did for me and three weeks after I picked it up from Reliable Home Appliances in Springfield I found out the replacements tape cartridges weren't available anymore.

Oh yeah. That was the 60's. And before it was Burger Chef, it was actually a Topps Drive Inn, precursor to KFC. Little known fact - The Colonel was in the Annandale Days parade in the 1960s. The railroad cut is well known. It cut across the parking lot of K-Mart and crossed the corner of the George Mason Regional Library parking lot. There was some beautiful stonework bridge abutments across from the library back in the woods, until the county did a storm-water channeling project about twenty years ago and tore the whole thing down. The railroad cut is quite real. The bed was almost completely laid when the Civil War broke out, then the line went bankrupt. There are little spots of the bed all across the county, such as in Packard Park off Hummer Road in Annandale. Not shown on the 1885 USGS because it was nothing but an earth berm.

That house was the home of my Best Man's mother back in the 1950s when Annandale was quite different than what it is now. Head shop was in the back and upstairs. They had good prices on records too.

The line terminated at Gainsville. If you head into the Conway Robinson State Forest (a mighty nice park all in all), you can walk along a good portion of it. Don't confuse it with the gas pipeline swath, which is NOT the grade.

Rory,THANK YOU for posting that picture. I have often wondered what that home looked like. As far as I can tell from checking historicaerials.com, it appears the home was located on the east-bound entranceramp onto I-495 South heading towards Springfield, hence the location of the historic sign on Port Royal road near Kilroys.

Local No. VA band- '4 Out of 5 Doctors' used a group picture taken in front of the old EAT place as the back cover for their 1980 debut album. You can't see the EAT sign above their heads but you will surely recognize the red/white trim.

Thanks Eminence Front! That was quick! I used to work for washington gas when Reston was getting built up and we would roll in there for good hot food a couple times a week. This was early eighties. Awesome pic!!!!

In my search for more old images I came across info on the Occoquan workhouse womens prison where they locked up those pushy women who had the nerve to demand rights! Who knew?

I seem to remember there was one in Annandale, which is curious because Annandale also had a Lums in the Little River Turnpike Shopping Center near the Black Orchid. Anyone remember the Annandale Pet Shop when it was located in the house across from the now defunct Fuddruckers. This was on the south side of Rt. 236 next to what used to be a company-owned Mobil station west of Backlick Road.

I might have been sitting in one of those classrooms when this picture was taken. In the background is old Annandale Elementary School.

I also spent many years in the back classrooms as well in the old part of the school built in the 1920s. Wonderful full height windows, and of course, NO air conditioning.

There was also a large billboard sign for Reston on the West side of the old
body shop adjacent to the EAT place. The billboard had a large arrow pointing
South toward Baron Cameron left turn into Reston. Don't have a photo for that
billboard that stood for many years.

A friend of mine was working at Gills Amoco back when they had the lollapalooza. He said that there were so many people that they sold all the gas,cigarettes, drinks and food that they had in the station plus they hopelessly clogged the public toilets. By morning when the owner got there every last item including the motor oil was gone. The next year they overstocked and rented porta potties and it was just as bad.

Cool ticket stub! Thinking this was the Lollapalooza that featured Pearl Jam playing?? Security wasn't all that set and hoards of people bushwhacked from adjacent residential area to jump the snow fence and get in for free. WHFS also ran a couple of HFestivals from Lake Fairfax before moving to RFK. The first HFestival featured bands: Pursuit of Happiness, The La's and Concrete Blonde.

WOW, a buddy of mine turned me on to this thread. I grew up in Annandale in the 70s. This is a cool thread. I remember begging my dad to buy me a Radio Shack computer from the Shack in kings park shopping center. I forget the price but it was not cheap. Dad came through and put me on the cutting edge of high technology.

Yep. The Atari 400 was the cheap (flat keyboard) & the 800 was 'bangin... but they were slightly behind the "Big 3" (Tandy, Apple, Commodore).

Onceduponatime I had a Tandy P - thing took up an entire back seat in the car and was as easy to handle as a couple of concrete blocks.

Hey Gordon, where in Merrifield was that?

It sure looks like Falls Church on Hillwood Ave just east of Annandale Road.
It's got the same A&P and Drug Fair, the cut to the right of Drug Fair where the radio station is. It's got the radio station tower. The ABC store second from the end on the right. You can even see the same 2 story building behind the A&P on the left

My parents shopped at that A&P all the time and as kids we would go the radio station and watch the dj's.

I am also nearly 100% sure that the picture is the shoppng center on Hillwood Ave. The tower was (is?) a radio tower and the radio station studio was, in the old picture, in the breezeway immediately to the right of the Drug Fair. I forget the call letters, but they are most likely on the downwardly pointing arrow over the breezeway.

It appears to now be the home of WFAX Christian Radio, but back in the early 70's at least, the format was some sort of popular music.

Then you had Mattel promising to bring out the "Keyboard Component" for Intellivision, but it was delayed for something like two or three years and became one of the more notorious pieces of vaporware.

I remember having to use Atari 400s and 800s in school because some idiot on the PTA or the School Board decided all the kids should become "computer literate." In elementary school you had to learn to write simple programs in a language called "PILOT" (when you made a syntax error, it would respond "***WHAT'S THAT???****"). In junior high you got to use BASIC instead. For all that crap the only time I've ever used BASIC since then was my junior year in high school when I wrote a simple program to solve a math problem instead of sitting there doing the numbers myself. "Computer literate" my arse....when your car needs repair, you don't look around asking for someone who's "car literate" to do the work.

Now, speaking of Hillwood Avenue in Falls Church, that general area is one of the very few places inside the Beltway where you can still find good old-fashioned cutout route number shields on the roads. There are also a couple of US-1 cutouts in Old Town.

Damn, sorry, I had absolutely no idea that second image was going to be that big. The last time I saw it posted it was much smaller.

Anyone have an old pic of the OLD intersection of Burke Lake Road and Lee Chapel Roads?

Looking specifically for an old image from when it was 2 lanes in each direction from 80 - 85...

Even better if it's from the era when it had STOP SIGNS vs. traffic light(s)!

This would have been back in the day when the Burke School was still the elementary school for the area and the Miller property (compound) was across the street. Looking for something in the 1980 - 1985 era.

Yes, the water tower is gone now.

The S&W Cafeteria went into the A&P spot. I don't think it went in until they closed the one at 7 Corners. In the 70's maybe??

My Mom worked at 7 Corners and I remember going to the S&W a lot there. They had good fried chicken and bowls of ice cream, but then what else did a kid need. I am sure as a young teenager I was too cool to go to S&W, HA HA!

I heard they were offered $400,000 in the mid 80s and didn't take it. I am sure the offer only grew from there. No idea where they went. They were also friends with the junk house across from Lee Chapel 7-11, which became either the church or the townhouse community. I kinda forget how that driveway ran, but those two groups were always back and forth, it seemed.

It was funny in later years to sit at the traffic light late in the night and watch the old tow truck haul a car into the Miller compound. They also used to shoot off shotguns, or so it sounded.

That was Old Burke, the way I remember it.

For comparison purposes, here's the current version:

More old roads! This diagram comes from the 1969 Northern Virginia Thoroughfare Plan and shows how the then-planned Northern Virginia Expressway would have had an interchange at Route 50.

The interchange between the expressway and the Blake Lane Connector is pretty much where Circle Towers was built. The flyover ramp from the southbound expressway to eastbound Route 50 would have cut through the property where the Virginian retirement home is located now. Santayana Drive in Mantua (seen at the far left of the map) would have butted right up against the right-of-way for the highway, which would have run through where the ballfields at Thaiss Park are now.

I was met about 200' into the drive by a fella who popped from nowhere. Asked what I wanted... I was looking for an address which did not exist, but figured the Millers might know the name. They didn't, but were nice about... I left...

Speaking of goats, I recall for many years there was a small farm at the corner of Idylwood and Gallows Roads where the owner had a small number of goats. You could usually see the goats roaming around when you drove past on Gallows (that was our normal route to Tysons back then). But the goats vanished and for many years there was a sign on the corner announcing a reward for information about the theft of the goats!

I never took a picture and the land has been redeveloped with single-family houses. Isn't that how it always happens....

Where was the exact location of the Seven Corners Market that is in the picture on Page 4 or 5 of this thread?

On the service road above Rt. 50.
Public Storage and a bank are there now.
It use to be the Hillwood motel on the corner where the turn for Sleep Hollow Road is, then the 7 Corners market and then a car dealer and then Aamco transmission shop.

In the 70's, early 80's The 7 Corners market building was Ichabods, a topless club until they got busted by the police

Who remembers the BRATWURSTHAUS in Falls Church? There was another bar by the same name in Parkington, not sure if it was the same owners. There were some rockin bands there in the 80s. It was in a strip mall on 50 as I recall near the Cherry st intersection somewhere. Would love to see a pic of that place.

There was an Ollie's Trolley in the parking lot where Nick Rinaldi's Lanes were on Glebe road just before you hit Arlandria. I still crave the fries they sold in the early '80s with the special seasoning.

Wasn't it in Loehmann's Plaza? That part the sticks out in the parking lot where Celebrity Delly and the ABC store are?

@DH & Draft...It was in Loehmann's-in the section you stated....back when Celebrity Deli was a gift store....I bought my Mom a Hummel at that shop. A lot of $$ for a Kid. Amazing, Loehmann's pics are tough to find...

Lived in Burke Centre as a kid, but thanks to those crazy sonofaguns on the FCPS board went to WSHS...anyway, at least once a week our schoolbus would come to a halt at the beginning of Burke Centre Parkway because the Miller's hens were wandering all over the road. I'd love to see some old Burke Centre photos, if anyone has them.

Rt. 7 West sign pointing left/South to Reston/Baron Cameron Ave. in one its many forms that was regularly updated from early 60s into 80s. The 'EAT' restaurant was located behind the photographer that took this photo.

The S&W Café that was at the A&P location in the Hillwood Ave picture was also at Landmark Shopping Center. I loved their baked spaghetti and found a recipe that tastes just like it. I have made it many times. They also had fried Whiting fish every day that was great.

The Chesapeake Explorer's
Baked Spaghetti S&W Cafe Style
1.5 pounds ground beef ( 1 to 2 pounds works)
1 medium onion chopped course
2 stalks celery cut into 1/4- 1/2 " pieces
1 garlic clove minced
1 14 oz jar spaghetti sauce
1 28 oz can whole tomatoes with juice
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 big tablespoons cumin powder
4 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
4 oz shredded cheddar cheese
1 pound spaghetti
olive oil

Brown beef with celery onions and garlic, drain beef , add can of tomatoes and chop tomatoes up.
Add jar of spaghetti sauce cumin and chili powder. Simmer 10 minutes
Boil spaghetti in a big pot with a pinch of salt and 1 oz of olive oil.
Cook spaghetti till done drain well and place back into big pot, add meat sauce and mix well with 2 oz each cheese.
Pour into greased 3 quart glass baking dish, top with remaining cheeses .S&W cafe used to place a couple of slices of American cheese on top. Cover with foil and bake at 325F for 35-40 minutes

Garlic Bread: Slice a loaf of Italian bread into 3/4" slices. melt a stick of butter or margarine in sauté pan
with two minced garlic cloves. Dip slices in melted margarine and place on baking pan in 325 F oven for 10 minutes till they crisp.

The old railroad bridge on Rolling Road by Burke Road. In the 60s, the school buses were not allowed to cross the bridge for safety reasons and had to drive miles out of their way. Made for a long trip to and from school every day.

Anyone seen this? Not a lot of information on this photo. Susposedly the structure was located on the edge of the existing Tysons Corner shopping center along Rt 123. I'm guessing maybe 1950s, perhaps earlier?

Note the port hole windows. Strange house?

Springfielder, do you remember the one way bridge on Hooes Rd, just North of Gambrill and Scarborough St.(and down the large hill)? (Way before the Bypass/ Parkway existed) Also, farther north on Hooes, towards Backlick was a rickety railroad tie bridge around the insane double hair pin turn, maybe Southeast of the old Hunter Estate? When we moved to Springfield in '79 it was no joke the sticks, I remember two or three abandoned farmhouses at the top of our street, just before Medford Leas was built. One was lime green, the other white, pretty sure FCFD used those for controlled practice burns. Used to love going to the original Sydenstricker Church (old white chapel and red school house) graveyard and checking out the headstones.

@Springfielder-I believe that is the old Maplewood mansion which dated from the late 19th century. I believe the location was just east of the Beltway and north of Route 123 in McLean. By the time I saw it the area had become wooded.

@Springfielder-I neglected to add that I detest the wealthy and am quite cheerful when the woods take over old mansions. I'm a Progressive.

Loved the Orleans House. Used to work in the area and go there for lunch -- fill up on the Salad Bar and take the roast beef sandwich for dinner, about $5.00.

Went there right before the place closed -- you can't go home again -- it was expensive and not as good. They demolished the place and it was a park or something after the real estate market tanked. I believe they are finally putting something on the lot.

They would give me some roast beef bones for my dog, lots of meat on them. One time I tried taking one away from him and lifted him off the ground before he let go.

was there when this tanker hit the bridge post at 495 and 236 and we were straneded on 495 for over 3 hrs waiting for them to get the rd open,driver got killed in this accident

@Bill.N.: Thanks for solving the mystery. I wasn't around the Tysons area much back then, so didn't have a clue what it was.

By the way, not sure I can say that I detest the wealthy, but I'm all for the trees taking over! Absolutely hate it when a developer comes in and strips the land.

It was west of fairfax on Rt 29. Mr Burns owned it, he also owned that Ol Culpepper shoppe on 29.

@Huntington: Yes, I do remember the one lane bridge on Hooes Road. There were quite a few of those old bridges around here, back in the day. The Fairfax County Parkway changed so much of this area's character.

The Hooes Road bridge near the hair-pin turn was just rebuilt. I believe it re-opened last December.

I loved all the old back roads. As kids we'd drive around half the night. Gas was cheap--we'd get all our friends to chip in and we'd be set for the night!
