I remember the Cameron Station conveyor back in the 60s. The cashier gave you your cigarettes and eggs to carry out - they typically got stolen or broken in the conveyors...

I think Fort Myer commissary might have had the conveyor thing, as well.

Wow, some memories. I actually lived in that white house that was Penguin Feather back in 1976. I lived in Mt. Vernon Square apartments in the early 80s and used to walk over to Shakeys for dinner regularly, taking advantage of the 50 cent Lowenbrau tuning up to go over to 1320 club, and as a musician in the 80s and 90s, I played Sunset Grill many times.

Ever wonder what those steps at Lee Chapel Cemetery, at the intersection of Lee Chapel Road and the Fairfax County Parkway, were attached to? Pictured below is Lee Chapel in 1910.

The church was built in 1871 and was named in honor of Gen. Robert E. Lee. It closed once in the 1920s, but was reopened in 1939 due to the increased local population. It closed for good in 1951 after parcels of surrounding land were bought up for the future Burke airport (later moved to Dulles, for those who don't know). It sat vacant for awhile but was eventually used for a controlled burning due to vandalism. The cemetery is now maintained by Sydenstricker United Methodist Church.

I never knew the real name of that thing. Thanks.

The A&P in Springfield (used to be at 6711 Bland St -- now an Asian market) also had a skate wheel conveyor that ran along the front window of the store. As kids we thought it was "futuristic" and wanted to go through the little doors leading to the curb.

We went to Cameron Station about once a month. Thought it was cool that you could buy your groceries, then drive to the loading area which was about 4 lanes maybe, and your groceries came down the skate wheel conveyor and were loaded into your car by the staff.

Beacon Hill Giant had those roller things too back when it was up there by itself before the mall was built. At least Giant is all I remember being there. I don't remember the airport at all.

Just reading the word "cragmont" makes me laugh like hell.

My Dad would buy a few cases of assorted cragmont sodas and keep them in a old RC cola cooler that he bought used from a Highs dairy store in Arlington.

The cragmonts did not have pull tabs, you had to use a can opener. I thought I was pretty cool cruising around on my Marx big wheel with a cold cragmont in one hand. We used to run those big wheels down some of the big hills in Kings Park. I lived in Danbury forest so we would go to KP to run down the sidewalks on southampton at high speed with no brakes!

Best laid plans. This is the planning commission map for Tysons Corner from 1961. GCM HS, I-495 and the airport access road didn't even exist yet at this point, though they are shown in their eventual locations. Tysons Corner Center went where the convention center was meant to be.

Okay, thanks! I thought I had seen that highs before. Was it on route 1 or maybe on smoketown road? That Dodge pick up looks like a 90s model and Im pretty sure all the Fairfax highs were gone by then.

about highs - that pic is the one that used to be on Featherstone Rd - it's still there as some mom and pop quickeemart. What's funny is that 7-11 build one right acorss the street from that location, then ended up taking over the Highs when they left the are and ran both locations as 7-11s for years.

the second pic the fairfax highs used to also be an pretty cool arcade/pool hall thru most of the 90's

@GB

Damn I just had my memory hashed for Drug Fair in the Peoples Drug thread, must have been you that put the thought in the air.

re- Cherrydale- that neighborhood used to be so different than what is today, really run down, lot of bikers and beat to fuck Cape Cods. It didn't really clean up until maybe the later 80's.

I think the old yellow Stratford Junior High building, it's now Woodlawn or HB Woodlawn was the first school in Arl or maybe even VA that was integrated- may have been 1959 if I remember the stories correctly (7 yrs before I was a twinkle in anyones eye). I think it was a pretty big deal back then as they were still talking about it 20 years or more later.

I am pretty sure this has been brought up here..

At the site of Upton Hill Swimming Pool on Wilson Blvd used to be an old house that was HQ to the American Nazi Party. The leader was a nutjob named George Lincoln Rockwell who was assassinated in the late 60's by a disgruntled former Nazi as Rockwell left the nearby cleaners at Dominion Hills Shopping Center.

An easy one I'm sure....a very cool Mid Century Mod Spot...we spent 3 nights here in '67 waiting for our "Red Ball Express" moving truck to deliver our stuff to our newly purchased home @ Holla.

Pentagon construction:
Did you know that construction began on 11 September 1941? Sixty years to the day, terrorists hit it.

The preliminary plans were completed in 37 days, first occupants moved in on 29 April 1942, construction completed on 15 January 1943

Anyone want to take a guess as to how long this process would take today?

For more pics, check out: http://www.life.com/gallery/63331/rare-unseen-building-the-pentagon

Two on the golf course, and the third (technically still on the golf course) but immidiately south of greely. The dam blew out during hurricane Agnes in the 70's. my friends and I used to play on the remnants of the dam growing up. The dam was roughly behind Harwood Ct.

b) I put a pic of the sign of it up back on page 6 of this thread

it's REALLY cool to go back and see all the pics we've all put up on this thread

Add - a - Lite Glass, atop the once steep hill on Hooes Rd. at the corner of Hooes and Gambrill Road. I just missed going in there when it was in its last days of operation...1979. It was boarded up soon after and sat abandoned with the sign with the 455- exchange phone number for at least two years.

Diagonally from this store was another abandoned house, a larger two story home that was used for the Jaycees Haunted House for years in the early 80s and then was burned down in a Fairfax County Fire training exercise. This house was next to the 7-11/Citgo/Halpers Lawn Mower repair shop.

For years, the Mobil was on Citgo drive and was Hooes Road Mobil. Or was it called Halls Corner Mobil first?

Winner winner chicken dinner,
I remember going to that haunted house when I was very young, scared the crap out of me! They'd line you up down a side road and take you thru the woods to get there (if I am remembering correctly). Years later, my friends and I would take the path behind the 7-11 to go sneak cigs. Eventually the old farmhouse adjacent to the Mobil station was vacant/ abandoned for the eventual construction of the Parkway. We used to sneak in there to smoke and just hang out. Good Times!

@kings - remember when the dude from Lorton jumped in the water to save that one lady.
HEY KIDS! The plane hit the northbound span which was bumper2bumper cause at the time, DC was rebuilding the Case Bridge (the bridge going over the marina).

They renamed the bridge after Arland Williams, this old dude who was on the plane who survived the crash and keep giving the life preserver (yeah, we only like had ONE back then - wtf, right?) to other ppl. He eventually died out in the water :(

also, please note that until 9/11, this was DEFINITELY DC area's WORST DAY EVAH.

heh/ My question is................what's the connection in that pic to Cox Farms. Cause I've never seen "McLean Farmers Market" before in my life.............but I've sure as ***k seen that Apple Cider sign before

@sleepy - so I'm stumped. I've been looking at that one building in the skyline behind the Interstate there and know I've seen it a ba-JILLION times..................but Lord help me I'm stumped.

@skylark - is that off of Loisdale? Was it called Loisdale back then?

edit: I'm an idiot. How could I forget to put up pics of this place, right? And turns out I was wrong about the apple cider sign........but at least you can see why my confusion LoLz

@Gordon, I'm pretty sure it was removed in the early 90's after some wind damage. Some more cool facts about my fave....
The first car drove under that magical sign Oct. 4, 1956, the day of the shopping center's grand opening. The sign consisted of an 80-foot-tall vertical section that read "7 CORNERS" and a horizontal arch reading "SHOPPING CENTER." The 11-foot-tall "7" forecast the weather. A jingle from those days:

When Number 7 is shining red, nasty weather is ahead.

When Number 7 is shining green, fair weather is foreseen.

When Number 7 is shining white, cloudy weather is in sight.

A vertical row of lights flashed upward when the temperature was increasing and downward when the mercury was falling. As if this weren't enough, there was also a three-foot-high digital clock.

Love the picture of Edsall and Yoakum. I note the Watergate at Landmark wasn't done yet because Buildings 3 and 4 aren't there. My wife lived in Building 4 before we got married; it's behind the large one up the hill in the picture posted here, the building we always called "the Ugly Building."
